Christa Pikes is awake and ‘talking’

She’s out of the coma and talking to her lawyers. Aibu to think the state of Tennessee can’t possibly try to do the lethal injection again ? Surely not? People on Reddit are suggesting she might need an amputation of one of her arms because of how caustic pentobarbital is.

Not an excuse, as mitigating factors. Look, you clearly understand what people are saying, you just want her executed and are happy for it to be as drawn out and tortuous as it takes. I think that's a sign of someone with psychopathic levels of sadism, but you see yourself as a beacon of morality. A moral person would not want to see someone who was 10 at the time of their crime executed.

What I have said doesn’t make me those things you have accused me off.

You are accusing me of being some sadistic psycho because she should still get what she was sentenced to? What the state and jury have declared what she should face for the consequences of HER actions? What she apparently had already accepted?

I didn’t say she was mystic Meg.

I said she knew the consequences of torturing and murdering someone. Everyone knows what happens when you do that, the minimum is life in prison. In America in certain states death penalty. Yes of course she wouldn’t have known about 30 years in solitary confinement and her having a failed execution not once but twice. I never said she was mystic Meg and knew all this was upon her did I? But she would have known the very basics of what happens when you commit such a crime.

Did she truly understand the death penalty though?

as pp have said, she was just 18, with brain damage from FAS and childhood trauma. She clearly didn’t understand what she had done was wrong, she didn’t attempt to hide it, and was quite open about what she’d done.

it’s well known that the brain doesn’t fully mature until mid 20-s and part of that is the ability to foresee consequences of one’s actions. How many teens speed in cars not for one minute thinking oh I might kill someone doing this.

i haven’t seen if she had full psychiatric assessments when she was young but somehow i doubt she was a “normal” functioning adult by average standards.

Could you elaborate? Are you arguing that an execution is only not-cruel if it succeeds? (Put aside if you're against execution in the first place, please).

If that's your stance, then are you saying if it fails, then the failure was cruel and unusual punishment? Because I think cruel and unusual (as a legal defence) refers to deliberate actions.. if I'm right, then a failed execution (as long as not deliberate) wouldn't qualify.

A second attempt can't qualify because it's just carrying out the original sentence.

What's the legal argument?

If a failed attempt is cruel and unusual punishment then you could never risk another failure and would have to ban all executions, surely?

"If a failed attempt is cruel and unusual punishment then you could never risk another failure and would have to ban all executions, surely?"

Firing squad has close to zero percent failure rate (barring all marksmen deliberately trying to miss or all somehow having inoperational guns). However, this amounts to a bloody spectacle and the the myth (dispelled?) of a painless medical 'putting to sleep' method of capital punishment has prevailed

As many do, she’s not the only person in the world who endured this horrific abuse as a toddler/child there are soo many others who have endured this kind of abuse as young as she did but not every single one goes on to being a torturing, murdering scumbag. You cannot justify this horrendous crime because of her childhood, yes her childhood was horrendous I get that but as I’ve said before it’s not a free pass to doing what she did.

Yet again, the issues is not just that she endured horrific abuse as a toddler, it is that she was abused even before birth by virtue of damage caused by her mother's alcohol consumption which would have irreparably harmed her brain; and that her abuse continued way beyond toddlerhood, right through her childhood. Why do you keep trying to minimise this? What precisely is your evidence of all these people who have suffered all of that without being damaged?

And why do you keep coming up with this utter fiction that those who disagree with you want a free pass for her? I haven't seen one single poster on this thread asking for that.

It’s the Charlie Kirk principle isn’t it.

the deaths of innocent people is an acceptable consequence of gun ownership/the death penalty.

i want my revenge/these people punished, therefore i find it ok if a few people die undeservedly as a consequence.

Of course understanding a position is not the same as condoning it ...

Blackwidowsbite · 07/10/2026 12:47

Below their level? So if we hang them, we become worse, Than a man who deliberately picked up young kids and sexually abused them and then murdered them and buried them, and got his GF to take pictures posing on their graves? we become worse than the couple who sexually abused and physically abused their own flesh and blood and tortured young women who again they randomly picked up off the street to then finally strangle them and some mutilate their bodies and bury them in the garden under the patio or in the basement? Below the level of Harold shipman who was a man who was trusted by his patients, a GP also who loved the thought of being able to choose whether someone died or not and used his medical expertise to do this and kill 100’s of innocent people, below the level of a man who preyed on vulnerable children, who sexually assaulted and abused before killing them and dumping their bodies?

I’m sorry how does hanging them make us below their levels?

Yes, that argument always seems patently absurd to me.

Removing horrific, sadistic, criminals from society permanently (because they are too dangerous to release, and it serves no purpose to keep them imprisoned with other violent criminals until they die of natural causes) by ending their lives in a quick, clean fashion (or at least, attempting to), is nothing like what they've done.

No the "penny hasn't dropped" as you so patronisingly put it.
I don't see how I can disagree with your beliefs as you don't have any!
I'm not "pretending" anything, so please don't post your assumptions based on second guessing my thought processes.

Since when was it impossible to have beliefs unless you believe in god?

LadyBlueberry · 07/10/2026 13:16

Newname26 · 07/10/2026 12:32

Sorry I actually can't see what you have said you'd consider mitigating circumstances?

She was abused sexually and physically her entire life, not protected by anyone. 2 stranger rapes as well as the rapes by family.

I actually can't imagine life getting much worse.

So what would you regard as mitigating circumstances

But that’s what people are doing, using her age, childhood and other things as an excuse.

It's not being used as an 'excuse'. It's not a defence. It generally only comes into play after conviction and its relevance is in relation to sentencing

Where have I stated that others who have endured similar childhoods haven’t been damaged? I have never said that, I have said that there are many others who have had similar childhoods and haven’t become torturing murderers. I haven’t minimised anything, I have clearly addressed her past.

Fortuity · 07/10/2026 13:18

Blackwidowsbite · 07/10/2026 10:56

So do you think the same with ted bundy? John Wayne gacy? Ian Brady? Myra hindley? Fred west? Rose west? Levi bell field? Harold shipman? Do you think murderers have been taught this from a young age? Every single one?

You claimed that Christa Kite must have learned the difference between right and wrong despite a childhood where she saw little but people who abused and assaulted her getting away with it. It is no answer to refer to people who didn't have the same abusive childhood. Why not have the grace to acknowledge that your claim doesn't work, rather than trying desperately to deflect?

Newname26 · 07/10/2026 13:21

Violinist64 · 07/10/2026 12:31

There has been a lot of discussion about the sickening abuse she suffered as a child - where were the authorities then? - but what about the Foetal Alcohol Syndrome? It causes learning difficulties and lack of impulse control, which alongside the abuse, was a deadly combination. Surely the best punishment and treatment from the outset would have been a secure psychiatric hospital such as the American equivalent of Broadmoor.

Thats exactly what I've been thinking. There must be American equivalents.

LadyBlueberry · 07/10/2026 11:01

Maybe you didn't see my follow up post where I wrote that I do believe in some mitigating circumstances and gave examples of some of them.

However, I stand by my point that a bad childhood should not be a mitigating circumstance for an adult crime. It will not benefit women and girls when our rapists and murderers put this forward as a plea for clemency, a discount.

Shocking as it is, many of them will exaggerate their bad childhoods or even make one up in exchange for a sentence discount.

No, a bad childhood is not something you can trade on for ever: many many people have them and live law abiding lives.

If they have had such a bad childhood that it has made them a danger, then it could be argued that they might be judged even more of a danger; as that bad childhood will be with them for ever.

Well, no. If people have had such a bad childhood that they have suffered mental harm and are dangerous for that reason, they should be treated. Fortunately, we don't just chuck people in prison because we deem them to be potentially dangerous.

You cannot claim that because some people overcome the circumstances of their own particular bad experiences in childhood, therefore all people who have suffered different bad experiences must be able to. These things just aren't comparable, and are dependent on a myriad of factors. How do you compare the circumstances of, say, someone who was beaten between the ages of 10 and 15 with someone who was raped and beaten multiple times by multiple men from the age of 2 until adulthood? How do you compare the circumstances of two people who have suffered similar abuse, but one was born with a disability and one wasn't?

No-one is suggesting that Christa Kite should have been allowed to "trade on" her past to escape all punishment. However, even US law does not allow for a judicial law that encompasses being maimed and having brain damage inflicted on you by the state and then going back again to be killed. So why does she alone deserve that?

SerendipityJane · 07/10/2026 13:28

I wonder if they could sell some of CPs organs, to try and recoup the expense of this execution ? Make money and finish the job off at the same time.

Fortuity · 07/10/2026 13:28

Waxstamp · 07/10/2026 11:08

I find it strange they gave her hospital treatment after the botch. Why resuscitate someone to kill them at a later date, it seems particularly cruel and unethical.

Couldn’t they have just given her another lethal dose whilst unconscious. Vets manage to put animals down easily enough.

What makes you think another lethal dose would have worked? Remember there were no trained medics involved.

Yetanotherone12 · 07/10/2026 13:29

SerendipityJane · 07/10/2026 13:22

If you can make money out of it, you can be sure there will be.

That’s probably the issue- long term psychiatric care will be ££££. The only profit will be to the care provider.

US economics probably means death row and execution is much, much cheaper. No money to be made in secure psychiatric facilities. So nobody will vote for criminals to have that option- keeping the belief that people need to pay for their own healthcare.

Livelovebehappy · 07/10/2026 13:30

Horrible situation. There are no winners here. Whilst i agree Pyke deserves zero dlsympathy i just think this farce has highlighted why there shouldnt be a death penalty in the civilised world. Maybe an alternative such as solitary confinement for the rest of their life. Sometimes living can be worse than death.

Fortuity · 07/10/2026 13:31

Missey85 · 07/10/2026 11:11

So do lots of people I was 2 when I was first SA it happened daily along with PA until I was 14 and left home I've somehow managed not to torture or murder anybody 🤷 I have a diagnosis of cptsd and depression I also have epilepsy due to the physical assaults

Awful as that was, I would still put money on the fact that your past was nothing like as awful as Christa's, on the basis of what you say here. At least in your case you were able to escape at 14, and you do not suggest you were born already damaged by your mother's alcohol consumption.

Fortuity · 07/10/2026 13:39

Blackwidowsbite · 07/10/2026 11:15

Just because I believe everything happens for a reason doesn’t mean I believe in a god and that it is gods work.

As I’ve said previously, she should be dead by now she was given the lethal injection twice. Whether it was botched or not doesn’t mean she shouldn’t still get her punishment and be excused because it was ‘botched’ the state haven’t deliberately thought oh we will make her suffer have they? I just believe in karma but that’s my belief and I am entitled to that, just like you don’t believe in the death penalty, what I don’t understand is people feeling sorry for her because her childhood was horrendous and in my mind makes me think she should be excused from the crime she committed because of that and should be shown empathy and sympathy because of this ‘botched’ event. The victim and the victims family/friends had to listen to what she did to their family member and friend and it’s horrendous. If those family members and friends read this thread I wonder how they would feel about the people excusing her crime because of her childhood. As I have also mentioned and I’ll do it again as I seem to have to repeat myself, there are many people all over the world who have had traumatic experiences, life events and childhoods but they don’t all go on to murdering and torturing innocent people. So that is no excuse.

FFS, why can you not get it through your head that no-one is claiming that her crime should be excused? They simply disagree as to whether what she has been through justifies what has happened to her and being put back on Death Row.

The way you keep misrepresenting what everyone else says is extraordinary. However, it does demonstrate your lack of any valid argument.

RedTagAlan · 07/10/2026 13:39

Fredabasset · 07/10/2026 13:05

@RedTagAlan As for the OT Christians, they should maybe sit down with the NT ones and have a chat about what a "real Christian" is.
There is no such person as an "Old Testament Christian".
Anyone who relies solely on the OT is in fact Jewish.
So I would be careful with your posts, because you are getting very close to creating antisemitic comments.
In any event, you should stop telling anyone how to practice their particular religion.

Nonsense. There are loads of Christians about that pick what they want from the OT. Earlier someone mentioned " an eye for an eye". Firmly OT.

How on earth is it anti semitic to mention the OT anyway ?

Quote " In any event, you should stop telling anyone how to practice their particular religion."

Where did I do that exactly ? Would you like me to quote chapter and verse about what Jesus said about forgiveness, and more joy in heaven over one sinner that repents ? And did you happen to catch the bit about what he said to the murderers he was being crucified with ?
