Christa Pikes is awake and ‘talking’

She’s out of the coma and talking to her lawyers. Aibu to think the state of Tennessee can’t possibly try to do the lethal injection again ? Surely not? People on Reddit are suggesting she might need an amputation of one of her arms because of how caustic pentobarbital is.

Deleted as post doesn't make sense without the one it was replying to.

They shouldn’t have been hanged but what about Ian Brady? Myra hindley? Rose west? Fred west? Harold shipman? Levi bell field?

The heinousness of their crimes doesn't make state-sanctioned killing right imo. The state cannot give life, and it has no business taking it, even when the person concerned has themselves taken a life, or even several.

And what about Barry George, the Tottenham 3, the Guildford 4, the Birmingham 6, the Maguire 7, Judith Ward, Stefan Kiszko? All found "guilty beyond reasonable doubt", and all their convictions subsequently found to be wrong.

On those grounds alone, the death penalty should never be used, because even "beyond reasonable doubt" isn't a certainty that someone is guilty.

Awful as that was, I would still put money on the fact that your past was nothing like as awful as Christa's, on the basis of what you say here. At least in your case you were able to escape at 14, and you do not suggest you were born already damaged by your mother's alcohol consumption.

Fucking hell, a poster tells you she was sexually and physically abused from toddlerhood to 14, and that's your response?

Horrible situation. There are no winners here. Whilst i agree Pyke deserves zero dlsympathy i just think this farce has highlighted why there shouldnt be a death penalty in the civilised world. Maybe an alternative such as solitary confinement for the rest of their life. Sometimes living can be worse than death.

like I said up thread, I actually think rehabilitation and teaching her what normal society is would be a more effective “punishment” in this case.

she lived a life where she was taught abuse wasn’t wrong. It was normal, it was what people do. If she can be shown that it is wrong, and she can accept that, then she will have to live with that for the rest of her life. Remorse and guilt are harder to live with than the belief that her punishment isn’t a “punishment”, it’s just want people do to each other.

solitary confinement for her may even be acceptable. If all she’s experienced in her life from other humans is pain and suffering, being away from society, fed, warm and clean may be her idea of comfort.

OtterlyAstounding · 07/10/2026 11:16

It really doesn't matter why they hurt innocent people. What matters is that they hurt innocent people.

If a man with foetal alcohol syndrome rapes and beats a woman, for example, and tries to use that condition as an excuse, I really don't give a shit. If anything, the fact that he has a condition that apparently makes him prone to abusing and raping women, just means he should be locked away forever.

Apply that logic, and we should lock up all babies and children with FAS to keep everyone else safe. Do you want to live in that sort of society?

Pike has suffered her whole life. She was born with brain damage and had seizures as a child she also had learning difficulties and had problems following instructions, she had mental health problems, she was subject to horrific sexual, physical and emotional abuse as a child, her parents neglected her, she was raped as a teenager, she was in an abusive relationship. She has spent the last 32 years in jail.
She was in obvious agony when they tried to execute her
She did a terrible thing (along with her boyfriend who because he was a few months younger from her wasn't sentenced to death) but don't you think she has suffered enough?

SerendipityJane · 07/10/2026 13:46

So clearly some mitigation is allowed ....

That's not at all what I said. Unless you think all people with FAS really are all committing murders and abuses because of the condition?

You claimed that Christa Kite must have learned the difference between right and wrong despite a childhood where she saw little but people who abused and assaulted her getting away with it. It is no answer to refer to people who didn't have the same abusive childhood. Why not have the grace to acknowledge that your claim doesn't work, rather than trying desperately to deflect?

Im not deflecting i am trying to argue that not everyone who has had bad childhood becomes a murderer.

Fredabasset · 07/10/2026 13:49

@RedTagAlan " In any event, you should stop telling anyone how to practice their particular religion."
Where did I do that exactly ?
See below, your post at 13.39 today.
'As for the OT Christians, they should maybe sit down with the NT ones and have a chat about what a "real Christian" is.'
I repeat - there is no such thing as an "Old Testament Christian", because the terms describe two different religious identities and eras.
So stop making up stuff to support your arguments.
People can quote from the OT but it doesn't make them 'OT Christians' that's just a figment of your imagination.

FFS, why can you not get it through your head that no-one is claiming that her crime should be excused? They simply disagree as to whether what she has been through justifies what has happened to her and being put back on Death Row.

The way you keep misrepresenting what everyone else says is extraordinary. However, it does demonstrate your lack of any valid argument.

Yes exactly my point excusing that she should still be on death row!!! This is my point!!! It’s excusing she shouldn’t still be punished for her crimes and what she was sentenced too!!! Bringing into the thread her traumatic life and before being born, saying she has suffered enough that’s what I mean about people excusing her!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you get what I mean now.

Colleen lost her life and her mother lost her child. I’m afraid I have little sympathy

Legally, I think this is really interesting and is basically the pound of flesh speech from Portia in The Merchant of Venice…perhaps mixed in with a bit of Ashley Judd in Double Jeopardy.

The punishment was death, not loss of an arm. So technically, she’s been done dirty here and in the Land of Litigation has some kind of theoretical claim against the State.

I don’t have much sympathy for her, but if your policy is death, then you really can’t fuck it up.

Jon venables? Tortured and killed a 2 year old at the age of 10, Robert Thompson age 10 also, Robert Thompsons childhood, severe physical violence, severe sexual violence by the hands of his father, then his brothers turned on each other and it still carried on after the father left, he went to prison was rehabilitated he’s not been known to commit further offences since.

Jon on the other hand no signs of abuse or violence in his childhood, continues til this day to commit offences and be recalled to prison because he is still a risk and keeps offending. James’s mother is STILL til this day fighting to keep that piece of shit inside as they keep releasing him. She has fought all this time since the brutal death of her son trying to protect other children from this scumbag. This is in my opinion where the death penalty should come into play. The UK have spent so much money trying to help and rehabilitate this one person and he will not change, he will never change and if he is free he will continue to hurt and be a danger to children. It is said that venables was the leader of what happened to little James not Robert yet Robert had the childhood that some of you think should excuse these crimes.

Jon didn’t have the same upbringing as Robert but is still committing crimes and being found with disturbing and sickening images of children and being released! Like make that make sense???????

Congratulations on discovering that different people react differently to different circumstances, and therefore need judicial penalties which take all factors into account.

There were and probably still are people who argue vociferously that Thompson should have been moved to prison at the age of 18 and left there. Yet he is, so far as we know, a law abiding and productive member of society. Is that a worse outcome?

If what you’re saying is true then they shouldn’t be given life in prison if there ‘isn’t a certainty that someone is guilty’ so what is the point in the justice system full stop? 🧐

Im not deflecting i am trying to argue that not everyone who has had bad childhood becomes a murderer.

Well obviously they don’t.

the case is that crista had a combination of brain damage at birth, and a lifetime of severe abuse. She was not taught hurting others is wrong, and appears unable to realise the consequence of her action. She may not have conceived that there was a world where abuse didn’t happen.

other people are abused, yes, and don’t grow up to be murderers. But you can’t compare. Those people may have had normal intelligence, able to learn from school, tv, general observation that their experience is not the normal one.

all brains do not react in the same way. Two people may suffer the same brain damage but exhibit completely different clinical symptoms.

humans are not clones.

The point people are making is that she should not have been sentenced to death in the first place because of her age and background.

To uphold that sentence, which was already wrongly applied, in spite of the extra trauma and physical damage she has endured at the hands of the state, would be doubly barbaric.

!!!!!!!!!!!

Fortuity · 07/10/2026 13:56

Awkwardisfunny · 07/10/2026 11:36

If their laws determined she should be executed then a failed execution shouldn't nullify that. There are victims to think about. When you commit her crimes, you can't complain if something goes wrong during your execution.

This isn't to say I agree with executions, there just isn't a valid argument here to block another attempt. Had they succeeded, she wouldn't be talking to her lawyers.. maybe next time, they just do it more quickly.

I think you sort of can complain. She was sentenced to death, which by implication and US law means a humane execution efficiently carried out. She wasn't sentenced to be subjected first to brain damage and maiming. In effect, she has been the victim of an extremely serious unlawful assault by the state. It fully justifies the courts being asked to rethink, not least because, as matters stand, no-one can guarantee that the same thing won't happen again.

idrinkandiknowthings · 07/10/2026 13:57

Beyond bizarre. Two attempts made to execute her and when they failed all efforts were made to keep her alive. For what reason? To try to execute her again?

An utterly abhorrent crime but I've always been against the death penalty, although I appreciate that views may differ depending upon perspective.

Yetanotherone12 · 07/10/2026 13:59

The US constitution forbids “cruel and unusual punishment” 8th amendment.

I don’t think anyone can argue that that is exactly what this is.

further attempts to execute would be unconstitutional, and ianal but I reckon a decent one should be able to make that stick and have her sentence commuted to life.

Fortuity · 07/10/2026 14:01

Blackwidowsbite · 07/10/2026 11:42

Yes off course what she has been through at a young age has somehow lead her to believe violence and suffering is ok. Yes the state let her down when she should have been protected. Yes her horrific childhood played a part in this. Yes she may be mentally unwell.

Still doesn’t excuse her torturing and murdering someone.

Yet again, where have `I or anyone claimed that this excused Christa Pike?

Why do you KEEP making this ridiculous claim?

MrsShawnHatosy · 07/10/2026 14:02

Blackwidowsbite · 07/10/2026 12:37

To the people also quoting wrongful hangings back in the 50’s and before, yes it’s unfortunate that this happened to the wrong people and it is sad that their lives were taken wrongfully for a crime they did not commit but these days the technology with DNA testing and forensic science is far, far more developed and advanced than it was back then not to mention CCTV is in majority of places these days too, The last known serial killer arrested was Rex heuermann back in 2023 because of the new advanced DNA testing and analysis.

There is still police incompetence and corruption though. Remember Stefan Kiszko. He was not executed but might as well have been. He lived for 22 months after serving 16 years for a murder he could not have committed.
