Being harassed about Smart Meter

NewGirlInTown · 06/10/2026 05:43

Does anyone know if utility companies can force homeowners to have a Smart Meter?
I don’t want one but am getting frequent calls and texts hassling me.
I told them on the telephone that I am not interested.
My meter is very accurate; estimated usages are incredibly close to actual, so no alarm bells there.
I should add that I have recently withdrawn some of the substantial credit balance on my account, leaving 2/3 months worth of direct debit. I did it all through their online service, but since then, I am being hassled.
Many thanks to anyone who can provide advice.

I am beginning to suspect ElatedOtter is in favour of smart meters....

I’m in favour of quashing misinformation about them. I notice you didn’t respond to any of my points earlier.

It is if the smart meter was making incorrect readings which according to the industry, is not possible so they insist the consumer must be using more fuel. Then it turns out the meter is faulty. There are enough verified examples in the press of this occuring and how hard it is to get the utility companies to acknowledge it.

The examples that appear in the press are predominantly smart meters that are not successfully communication with the supplier. Often the customer is unaware, the supplier ends up using estimates and gets it wrong. The smart meters themselves are basically the same as the older digital type, which have been around for many years, except they have a radio bit stuck in top. They measure energy passing through them in the same way, and are just as accurate.

I'm with EoN. They've been harassing me for two years now. They did take a six month break when I told them my husband was terminally ill but once that expired they continued (DH had died by then). I get one or more calls daily (fortunately my phone says 'suspected spam' and I ignore them) and I also get very regular texts and emails, and the occasional letter. Their stance is that my meter has reached the end of its life and may no longer be accurate. It's true that meters do have a shelf life and mine is very old, but I don't want it changed yet. I had a horrible experience last year when (newly widowed and vulnerable) some of my electrics failed. I had to have a new consumer board fitted and a partial rewire and spent weeks with multiple extension reels running from upstairs to downstairs to keep my downstairs supply running. It's given me huge anxiety about electrics and I don't want anyone touching anything now that's been fixed. I'm even considering changing supplier to see if that helps.

Edited to add: I know I'll have to get it done eventually, but just terrified some bungling engineer will turn up and botch things.

Edited

I'm also with EoN - go to your account and you'll find Smart meter communications listed if you scroll down. Click on that and hit Unsubscribe, then save. That should do the trick. I too have an old meter that works perfectly well and I am aware quite a percentage of smart meters don't work.

It isn't nonsense, it is just stuff you don't agree with, hope that helps your understanding

Smart meters can save you money without changing habits, as PP have also pointed out. Hopefully this will sink in now, but I’m not particularly hopeful.

Pudmyboy · 06/10/2026 23:17

Ah bless. It's sad not to have hope.

I seem to be living rent-free in your head, that's what I would consider pathetic

BashfulClam · 06/10/2026 23:41

Martin Lewis has said they have a target to fit a certain number, they don't have to ensure they work. There are many that are faulty and the energy companies couldn’t give a toss as you are ticked off in their quota . Once they have a responsibility to fit new, FULLY FUNCTIONAL meters I might be interested. Why do I need to see how much I am using? I’m hardly going to stop washing my clothes or charging my phone because the box says it costs money.

Depends on how old your original metre is some need replacing for safety reasons

I really don’t understand the reluctance about smart meters

I’ve got a tiny house and don’t want a lump of plastic sat on the side taking up space I haven’t got. I don’t need to know how much electricity is being used when my kettle goes on. It’s not going to make me drink less tea.

You don't need to use the display screen. You can chuck it in a drawer or even in a bin if you want.

That might be the case. My issue is around ownership of smart meter manufacturers. I worked in Investment Banking for a long time. All of the banks had major investment in smart meter companies. Trust me, they will only do that if there are super profits to be made. And I dont fancy helping with those super profits.

Yep there’s way they aren’t doing anything to help them profit.

CherryKerry · 08/10/2026 01:28

Keep blocking their number, it takes a while as E-On had 15 different numbers they were calling me from 🤣.

JMSA · 08/10/2026 01:31

Smart Meters are absolutely pointless.

deadbobaplace · 08/10/2026 02:15

Ugh, Ovo. I had to block their number too.

No, you can't make an appointment to install a smart meter because I live in a block of flats and only the caretaker even has access to the meters. I mean, you could send someone round to harass him when he does the readings on Tuesday morning, but I don't rate your chances.

I'm curious to know what you were wasting money on? I don't think a Smart meter telling me how much electricity I'm using on various appliances would change anything I do. I use electricity as I need it. I only heat as much water as needed for a cuppa. My heating is regulated with a thermostat. I don't leave lights on unnecessarily. Lights are all LED now. I don't have a dishwasher or tumble dryer. The fridge freezer is kept full. Honestly I don't think it would make any difference whatsoever.

ElatedOtter · 08/10/2026 07:31

JMSA · 08/10/2026 01:31

Smart Meters are absolutely pointless.

As their mobility decreased, my parents could no longer access their meter to read it. A smart meter meant they no longer had to. And, they saved a fair bit of money on a smart tariff (Octopus Tracker), as I did, without changing how they used energy. But, sure, they're absolutely pointless.

JMSA · 08/10/2026 09:58

I couldn’t tell you the last time I looked at mine. For one thing, it doesn’t even connect to the gas meter properly.

Imseriouslyyouguys · 08/10/2026 10:00

I have had this for years. I just ignore all their calls and emails.
