To think it’s not normal……

……… that DH’s parents will ring every few days to tell him who they know that has died (he rarely has a clue who they are talking about), about every other member of the family and their pets, the price of eggs, cars they owned in the dim and distant past, a new kind of weed they’ve found growing in the lawn, the middle aisle of Aldi/Lidl, about “small boats” and political shenanigans but they have never, ever, in almost 16 years, asked how their eldest grandchild is?

It’s her birthday this week and they act as though she doesn’t exist (but moan when DH visits them without her that they miss her. They live several hours away so DH doesn’t visit much.). She’ll get no card or present, no call or message on the day. Her cousins live near them and get all of the normal attention.

I am raging for her, but moreso because DH enables it. If I ask what they said about her passing exams or passing grades in her extra curriculars he will make a point of telling them all about it VERY PERFORMATIVELY during the next call. There is rarely any reaction before they are back onto whatever the Daily Mail has them frothing over.

Arseholes.

If they are close to the other grandchildren, something is going on here. Have you or DH asked them why they don't buy DD presents or ask after her?

When she was a toddler they asked DH what she would like for her birthday and he said there wasn’t anything she needed. They obviously decided that meant they shouldn’t get her anything ever. I didn’t find out until we were up there years later and they made a big fuss of one of her cousin’s upcoming birthdays. She held it together but then got very upset about it because they don’t recognise hers. I have only visited for weddings and funerals since then. DH used to take her fairly regularly but she got sick of being ignored so doesn’t go more than once a year now. It’s definitely their loss but I just get the rage at these speakerphone phone calls where I just want to scream “if only you cared a tenth as much about your granddaughter as you do these near strangers”.

DH is autistic so wouldn’t have thought “she’d like” in response to the question.

Well just be great full it’s a phone call and not a visit.

my dear relative feels the need to fill Short empty silences. Sort of just nip to the fridge to get the milk silences. He tells random short stories that have no meaning to the one before or the one that’s coming and are boring. Although I must’ve admit he doesn’t talk about dead people.😀

The roads only go one way. They nearly didn’t come to our wedding because they were so furious it was taking place where we live and not them. (My family happily travelled from the other side of the country for it.)

It's likely they are autistic too, which may explain (but not excuse) their behaviour.

Ha! This post could have been made by my daughter! Her MIL is exactly like this, except not quite so frequent.

@InLawTwats

You’re being too harsh. Your DH has autism where do you think he inherited from?

You need to be literal, your dd needs xyz. This ensures your dd gets a present . I usually suggest one that dc wants but I don’t want to waste money on.

I don’t speak to them. And besides, it’s not about presents now - they can’t even be arsed to ask a single question about her, ever.
