I imagine these groups exactly the other way round- I find the idea of someone who could kill their own child on some sort of utilitarian calculation of greater happiness for the greater number absolutely chilling, and I'm confident that that person would be far more likely to torture a stranger to death at the behest of an authority figure- doing the "right thing" when every human impulse is to do the opposite.

(FWIW Milgram's work has been thoroughly discredited- the original experiment was full of flaws (including the fact that large numbers of the people who carried on "torturing" were aware that the set up was fake) and the results have not been replicated.)

Nonsense. I wouldn't want to live if I had caused the death of ten thousand people.

Nemorth · 05/10/2026 21:59

I’ve been trained to use weapons. Trained where to shoot at the body. This also means I’ve had a considerable amount of training about when and the legalities of “killing”. Also had training about ethics etc.

I’m not sure I could make that choice to kill 10,000 others to save one.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

I could absolutely kill one or two, maybe even up to 100 people to save my children…but 10,000? I’m not sure I could.

I even know how to use a rifle, bayonet and pistol.

XenoBitch · 05/10/2026 21:59

These questions are weird. Usually used to have a go at people over impossible hypothetical situations.
Find something else to get mad at people about.. like actual real life things.

MissFancyDay · 05/10/2026 21:56

No of course I wouldn't, it would be completely morally repugnant. My children would be horrified and disgusted.

What sort of people are you that would do this. Actually I don't believe you.

I would happily sacrifice myself for my children, me and DH have had this discussion. But kill other peoples children. No.

Pragmatic?

ILoveListeningToRainAtNight · 05/10/2026 22:04

So, if you are given that choice, to kill 10,000 strangers to save one of your people, have you considered that someone else, who is a stranger to you, might also be given that choice? Then you could be among their 10,000.

Reminds me of the movie The Box, where they can push a button and someone unknown to them will die. Then the box is given to someone unknown to them to make the same decision.

NimbleTaupeTiger · 05/10/2026 22:04

Kill 10,000 people to save one? You're barking at the moon.

Sure. I'm not sure how what you've written here is a response to what I've said. I'd far rather die than do either but that's not one of the options in this thought experiment.

SumptuousPecanNougat · 05/10/2026 22:06

I don't think I would hesitate to kill 10,000 people if they were all intentionally an imminent threat to the life of a loved one, but I couldn't kill innocent people as some sort of trade.

Yes but it follows on from the scenarios because I would predict that my loved ones (children) would feel the same. Therefore we would all end up leading a miserable existence.

SleeplessInWherever · 05/10/2026 22:12

For my son - yeah, tomorrow.

It’s not a decision I’d want to make or enjoy making, but I’m confident I would make it.

I also understand that others making the same decision for their kids would potentially mean mine was in that 10,000. They’re not really obliged to care about that, he’s not theirs.

When the “chips are down,” I’d imagine most would prioritise their own.

Coka · 05/10/2026 22:13

Would i sacrifice my child to save 10000 people? No. Would i kill 10000 so save my child? Also i think no. I dont think they would ever forgive me or understand that decision.

mrssunshinexxx · 05/10/2026 22:13

Yep to bring my mum back. In a heartbeat

Yesitsweird · 05/10/2026 22:14

SuperMaria · 05/10/2026 21:58

Not to pick on you specifically, but these answers are so unbearably cringe.

Like @nomas said, yours and nobody else’s kids are worth 10,000 other people dying. This is such a stupid hypothetical scenario, but even so, it’s insanely selfish. Other innocent men, women, children, babies. Bonus points for anyone who has ‘no qualms’ about it either, I mean fgs.

Saying you’d do this doesn't mean you love your kids so much more than anyone else.

Not to pick on you specifically, but I find answers like yours bizarely cold. Why is the love for a child cringe? How old are you? Do you find people hugging their mums cringe too?

Of course the right to live for 10000 people outweighs the right of one.

But I would save my own child.

If you wouldn't, if you apply cold robotic logic to it and feel your child is a fair sacrifice, well, I would say no you clearly don't feel the same as me.
I don't think I love my child more than anyone else, I assume all parents would do the same. It's the most natural, primal thing. And I think it's very very sad if a parent wouldn't.

I'm still reeling after reading about the botched attempted state killing of Christa Pike in Tenessee. Absolutely repulsed by the fact the mother of the murder victim , Colleen Slemmer, was actually present at the execution. Horrible that her daughter was murdered but how does watching someone being murdered by the state make her any better then those who murdered her daughter.
I dont like your thread at all OP.

Well, I’d imagine you might be less judgemental had you ever experienced what that poor woman has.

What a horrible question.

What would YOU do, and I really hope you never have to choose.

StroppyBulldog · 05/10/2026 22:17

For my children yes and I wouldn't even think about it

Ross?

Kemp? Or Ross from friends?

not sure why killing 100 is ok but then suddenly it starts to become all too much…

I'm not answering this ludicrous question.

BorgQueen · 05/10/2026 19:25

Absolutely. There are 3 people I would kill or die for.
I’d put a bullet in peoples’ heads myself if I had to, no qualms at all.

This. No question about it and zero fucks given

Fishwife2 · 05/10/2026 19:34

Absolutely not and also shocked by the result.

I can't see it as I have not voted on the poll. What's the result right now?

I'm a woman who loves males and thinks you have a weird attitude.

You love males? What males? Stallions? Bulls? Boars? Strange thing to say.

Duncantoldme2 · 05/10/2026 22:24

I'd prefer a different thought experiment. Something along the lines of is there a carrot in the box?

Ha ha - both fit, actually!
