Would you let a relative use your address for cheaper insurance

fannycondensation · Today 17:26

A young relative has recently started driving and has been quoted significantly more for car insurance using their actual address.
They’ve asked whether they could use my address instead because it brings the premium down considerably. They wouldn’t actually live at my address and the car wouldn’t normally be kept here either.
I’m really uncomfortable with it because I’d be worried about what would happen if there was an accident and the insurer discovered that the address wasn’t where they actually lived.
I’m a bit of a people pleaser, so I feel awful saying no when I know it would save them a substantial amount of money.
Would you allow it, or would you say no? Am I being overly cautious?
AIBU to say no ?

Absolutely not.

Their insurance would be invalid and they would be driving illegally.

GettingBTickets · Today 17:28

This will invalidate their insurance. The companies aren’t stupid and will investigate and see through the fraud if there is a claim. Because that’s what it it. Don’t be complicit.

Fruitynotfloral82 · Today 17:28

Absolutely not. I'm a people pleaser too but this would be a hard no.

Pinkflamingo10 · Today 17:29

You would be participating in insurance fraud

Apparentlystillchilled · Today 17:29

Absolutely not. It’s insurance fraud.

shooooes · Today 17:30

I mean she can put down any address she likes, but it is the same as not having insurance. So she will be paying to be uninsured. It's a stupid idea and if she has an accident she could be severely out of pocket and her premiums will go up enormously. The cost of insurance nowadays is bonkers but we all have to pay it sadly.

sashh · Today 17:30

Don't do it. The relative will not be insured.

Ilovemyshed · Today 17:30

No of course not. Just tell them (correctly) that their policy would be invalid. Besides which its fraud.

MigGirl · Today 17:30

Nope as others have already said this will invalidate their insurance. Maybe you should let them know this.

SleeplessRoads · Today 17:31

No, not unless they promised to keep the car at my address more often than not.

DramaAlpaca · Today 17:33

Of course not, for all the reasons everyone's already said above.

FrozenCharlottes · Today 17:33

No, I wouldn’t do this.

Their insurance will be invalid if they’ve given a false address. If they did need to make a claim, then this could cause an immense amount of problems for them.
I can see why the difference in the premiums is tempting them, but they’ve not thought through the potential long term consequences at all.

Lookatmelookatmedontevenlookatme · Today 17:34

Have they considered that your address wouldn’t tally with any of their personal information held elsewhere, eg on their driving licence or by their bank? Insurance companies aren’t stupid and they don’t give money away. They’d work this out.

Your relative is only thinking about the premium but if they had to make a claim they’d be in trouble.

Freshrain · Today 17:34

Explain to them the consequences of having to answer 'yes' to the question 'Have you ever had insurance cancelled or refused' when coming to get insurance in the future.
The original price they have been quoted will seem minimal in comparison.

Batties · Today 17:34

No. It’s fraud and should anything happen then you will be an accessory to that fraud.

EverlastingPeace · Today 17:34

what a stupid idea

YANBU

KvotheTheBloodless · Today 17:35

Nope. It's insurance fraud, don't do it.

fannycondensation · Today 17:35

Thanks everyone for all the replies. I think you’re all right and deep down I knew I shouldn’t do it.
I think I was just hoping someone would tell me it was fine because I’m such a people pleaser! 😂 I’m much more worried about the fallout from saying no than I am about the actual insurance side of it.
I feel awful because I genuinely want to help, but I also know I’d be worrying about it for the whole policy year if I said yes.
So I think I’m going to have to bite the bullet and say no, and just hope they understand. Thanks again everyone — you’ve definitely confirmed what I already knew deep down! ❤️

Absoutely no.

It's fraud and invalidates the insurance.

Insurance companies don't just pay out claims without investigation and they'll find out & pay nothing.

Ethelspagetti · Today 17:37

It’s insurance fraud. If it’s stolen they will double check this person lives at your property and will query why they’re not on the council tax register. They will not pay out.

You're over thinking. I would work on the people pleasing too and take baby steps to becoming more assertive. People will naturally stop taking the piss!

fannycondensation · Today 17:42

@shooooes 100% this !! Absolutely need to work
on my people pleasing .

OP posts:
MrsVBS · Today 17:43

Definitely not, they would be committing fraud.

doggoneitmercy · Today 17:50

It would probably fail at the first hurdle - insurers run a credit check and they can see your address…so they’d likely spot straight away that the address on their file is not the same as the one provided.

Either way, would be a hard no. You could be implicated in fraud.

fannycondensation · Today 17:54

I hate being put in such an awkward position.

I said no straight away but they tried talking me around so I said I would think about it just so I could get off the phone .

it’s a relative I love dearly so it’s hard to say no but I will .
