Would Labour voters be upset if joining the EU meant they could no longer tax children’s education?

Taxing children’s education is banned as part of EU membership. If the U.K. rejoined the EU, would Labour supporters be upset that they can no longer levy the tax or would it be seen as a necessary compromise.

If parents don't think private Sixth Forms are worth the money, that is quite damning in itself.

Does the information say if this is regional or nation wide?

They maybe can’t afford it, school shut down or stopped offering a levels after the tax. I think it’s damning in itself people arguing that somehow making children’s education less accessible and closing schools down is in anyway a good thing. I don’t get this attitude, people who would cancel Xmas just because someone else bought a bigger turkey. What a way to live your life.

Utilities and broadband aren't truly independent of each other because they use common infrastructure. That's why privatisation hasn't worked. For, say, gas, it's the same gas, through the same pipes, regardless of the "supplier".

With the NHS, you could have separate hospitals, separate GP surgeries, etc., all genuinely "competing" under the NHS umbrella, just like, say, opticians, who genuinely compete against each other for NHS patients, by being different, i.e. some open on Sundays, some offer evening appointments or home visits, some have "nicer" premises and waiting areas, some have better range of frames than others, etc.

Just stating what you think isn't fact.

I repeat: when there is only one supplier of healthcare (that is the factory that produces healthcare professionals) then all the ways of presenting that down the line are just smoke and mirrors to distract the less observant.

Sometimes it works.

Sometimes it doesn't.

Nobody is cancelling private schools or Christmas.

People have to buy within their means.

Be honest, have you ever sh*t in a public swimming pool so someone with a nicer costume couldn’t use it?

No, I have never shat in a swimming pool.

Private schools were always meant to be exclusive, not for the mass.

No, there are multiple medical schools/Unis, not just in the UK but all over the World. Likewise, there are multiple suppliers of medical equipment, drugs, etc.

On the continent, there is genuine competition in some countries using the co-pay or govt backed insurance financing schemes - they likewise have their medical staff trained up in different equivalent medical schools/Unis and likewise use different suppliers for equipment and drugs.

what the actual? If anyone either than a toddler having an accident went number 2 in a swimming pool I question their sanity.

100% agree, lunatics.

Just like the NHS then.

The reality is - most people
don’t care when private companies lose tax breaks they shouldn’t have ever had. It’s not something that is going to feature on the priority list when it comes to voting for 95% of the population.

How is it so difficult for some to see what is so obvious? Most people don’t care about VAT on school fees. Read the fricking room.

I don’t think you give U.K. voters much credit, the majority have the intelligence to do some basic research and understand it’s the fee payer of the education provided to children who pays the tax and not private companies.

'I don’t get this attitude, people who would cancel Xmas just because someone else bought a bigger turkey. What a way to live your life.'

They walk amongst us. We saw it all here on MN when the VAT issue was being discussed. Sad spiteful petty people.

would anyone still vote Labour?

I didn’t much care one way or another until I read the interminable whining on MN about it. I’m firmly in favour now.

That makes me laugh. Many - many - people seemed to care about VAT on school fees a couple of years ago, led idiotically by this toxic Labour government we're still lumbered with. Most of these people were not in any way affected by VAT on school fees. Yet they seemed to 'care'. Fascinating

Well then why not take your unfettered spite out on the government rather than on the general public who aren’t invested in your cause like you are. It was always a marginal policy for Labour and not what people were voting for. Your rage seems strangely misdirected.

I’m not sure why you’re taking any of the comments on here personally, as far as I can tell nobody has suggested that you were responsible for adding vat to children’s education. You don’t strike me as the type of person who’d be spiteful toward or envious of a five year old.

Hellohelga · Today 20:38

It’ll take time to rejoin the EU - lengthy negotiations re terms. The there will probably be an implementation phase. By the time vat on private schools is removed OPs DC will have left school, shame.

Araminta1004 · Today 20:41

I just don’t get why the Labour Party haven’t clocked by now, that any new tax or tax policy they introduce, has an avalanche effect. I mean you would think they have a modicum of self awareness by now.
I am not going to take position on whether it’s right or wrong, but it is a historically observable phenomenon.
And then it get held against them for the next 20 years.
So I don’t get why they go there!
Same with inheritance on billionaires who already left the country and half the wealth gone, demonstrable by actual facts.

Makes me laugh too. Although it's not really very funny.

The education tax was one of the very first policies Labour implemented. Somehow more important than all the other problems our country faces.

And they had it start that very January - half-way through a school year - even though they were warned by their own advisors it would cause more disruption to the children affected.

I find it fairly bitter that with the tax they added to vapes in the same budget, they gave a grace period of 2 years. That tax hasn't actually taken effect yet!

Vape sellers got 2 years to adjust. Children in their critical exam years got nothing.

They could even have started with a 5% VAT rate, to give time for existing kids to get through to a less disruptive stage... like they did for restaurants and leisure centres during covid. But no, nothing to soften the blow for schools.

How on earth can you pretend that it wasn't a top priority for Labour? And it was a top priority for Labour because they knew it was red meat to their supporters.
