Would Labour voters be upset if joining the EU meant they could no longer tax children’s education?

Taxing children’s education is banned as part of EU membership. If the U.K. rejoined the EU, would Labour supporters be upset that they can no longer levy the tax or would it be seen as a necessary compromise.

The VAT exemption has been removed for children’s education. Full stop. That’s what has happened.

It doesn’t affect children using zero fee publicly funded education services because no VAT is levied, therefore they are not affected by the direct taxation.

These are the facts, I can’t present them any clearer for you.

Having read all of your updates and your other threads, as far as I can see this is the first time you have actually presented anywhere near what is fact - and well done for having still managed to avoid using the word private.

Araminta1004 · 05/10/2026 10:06

Well as I am not a Tory @ThreadGuardDog not sure who you think you are talking to?
How do you feel about the fact that Labour is now actively appealing to the Lib Dem voter base and the more moderate Tory who was anti Brexit and is willing to ditch the old guard hate? Like petty private school obsessions? Clearly that old guard just ain’t that important to Labour anymore and they have finally seen the light.

Yes, pretty relentless despite asking rather tame questions and being polite. The closest I’ve got to an answer on why Introducing tax on children’s education is a good idea, is that it only affects half a million children (I.e not mine).

It’s a voluntary tax. If you don’t want to pay it, don't put your children in private education. There is an alternative. It’s called state education.

The policy was to remove VAT exemption on children’s education services, that is the policy that people support. VAT is payable now on children’s education, this currently affects around 500k children. I don’t see what is unclear about this?

Do I have to explain to people that you don’t pay VAT on zero fee public services?

You’d have a job, wouldn’t you? 20% of zero is nothing.

VAT is a mandatory tax on children’s education and vocational training as from January 2025.

I didn’t say you were a Tory. You seem to think that Labour ‘fucking off once and for all’ will make the country a happier place. The Conservatives are no longer trusted having made a dogs’ dinner of their fourteen years in government and when you consider the other alternatives I don’t think ‘happy’ is an appropriate term.

Private healthcare isn't VATed as well

Duncantoldme2 · 05/10/2026 10:18

Blarneyspoco · 05/10/2026 09:41

Completely agree. I also think the reason people get upset when asked to explain why they support it, is because they realise they’ve been misled.

Cognitive dissonance exemplified.

Blarneyspoco · 04/10/2026 22:02

Wasn’t the whole idea to upset a few parents and children? Surely you didn’t believe it was genuinely going to fund 6500 new teachers or any improvement in state education?

😆😆😆

Only a bad thing if you want it but can't afford it.

Do you still think it’s to improve state education?

Hehe @ThreadGuardDog - I clearly touched a nerve didn’t I. The key was in the “that nasty part of the Labour Party” - which clearly includes you if you ain’t going to admit once and for all this was a shitty policy! So come on, admit it!
Because Labour care more about people like me now who are Lib Dem or swing voters than you!

Tbf she said part of the Labour party, ie the politicians who added VAT.

And we’re off again.

Maybe it’s your understanding of voluntary tax, do consider income tax a voluntary tax because you can just have no income and not pay it?

Ik you’re getting a lot of personal attacks on these threads but yes what was the point?

And since Starmer and co pledged better state off the back of a poor policy why no questions on where that improvement is

Obviously it’s mn so your take is drawing loads of personal ire instead, happily I suppose the key creators of it have been ousted. So their cloth eared inability to listen lost them their jobs.

Yes, great to see the sneering gang of three gone.

Hold your ground @Blarneyspoco

You are not alone.

Araminta1004 · 05/10/2026 10:25

They aren’t going to add VAT to private health care as that is the money spinner for consultants and that is the deal they have to keep them onside if the junior doctors dare to strike again. Got to keep some people on side or it all blows up in your face.

TheFishFish · 05/10/2026 10:26

Blarneyspoco · 05/10/2026 09:53

So the motivation is to provide funding for state schools? If it was proven that this provides no funding for state schools or it’s actually a net tax loss, would you no longer support it?

The motivation of taxation is always to provide money for public services and government spending.

And yes, if you somehow managed to show a direct link that adding VAT onto private school fees has resulted in less tax revenue, I would reconsider my position, but somehow I don't believe you can.

Its also already liable to tax via your P11D as a BIK.

The change in VAT exempt law means that VAT payable on voluntary private education and vocational training as from January 2025.

Fixed that for you.

I didn’t vote Labour. So no nerve to touch. I just can’t see a current viable alternative that won’t land us even deeper in the shit. Kemi Badenoch hasn’t got an effective policy to her name. The welfare bill is exploding and the best she can come up with is an over complicated and unworkable system of limiting what benefit claimants can buy, that would add millions in admin costs.
