Kemi B - the best form of welfare is a well paying job...

She is absolutely right isn't she? Discussing the triple lock pension challenge and instead focusing on getting people into work. Do you agree with her ? Working 3 or 6 or 9 hours to then top up with benefits isn't the way forward (not including disabilities in here )

If the best form of welfare is a well paying job then why is Kemi B so stubbornly against raising the minimum wage? And pushing policies that suppress wages?

It’s a catchy phrase to distract from the fact everything she pushes for does the exact opposite from generating well paying jobs.

Agree

There were loads more but I couldn’t wade through ALL of them. If you narrow it down a bit further I’m willing to try to refine a bit though.

If you're a hiring manager then you surely know how difficult it is to find a suitable person with the right work ethics and some remotely suitable experience?

London here as well, DP trying to fill a bog standard IT role, 1k daily rate, no line management or financial responsibility, hybrid or fully remote. The only people applying are immigrant workers looking for sponsorship visas who are chancing it with no relevant experience.

Yes, to a certain extent.

I’m also in IT, can you tell more about the role? Obviously without giving too much away. Genuinely interested, I’ve recently had to lay off three developers of whom 2 are really struggling.

Job 1 - No guaranteed hours
Job 2 - Term time only
Job 3 - Weekends only
Job 4 - Telesales but does match criteria
Job 5 - No guaranteed hours
Job 6 - Matches criteria
Job 7 - Fixed term, no guaranteed hours

So 2 out of the 7 match the criteria.

With 1500 people out of work in Morecambe, you just need to find 1493 more jobs and you've cracked it

I think you’re being deliberately sarcastic and obstructive. I’ve found 2 jobs which fit your criteria after a very cursory 5 minute search, there will be a lot more if I put hours into job searching like unemployed people should be.

But this is the attitude I’ve come to expect from people whining there are no jobs - defeatist, rude, desperately hoping nobody will prove them wrong 🤷‍♀️

Agree

We obviously know why, at some point it’s not worth staying in business or hiring anyone. Would you rather have a poorly paid job and work your way up or no job?

I think they would rather have no job. Some people really are just lazy, and they’ll justify their joblessness to themselves however they can.

UC pays shit if you can work and have no job.

Not obstructive, slightly sarcastic though.

There are far more people looking for work than jobs available.

AI is taking many starter roles in IT and offices, automation is removing other jobs. Offshoring hasn't helped

10 years ago there were multiple people on the tills at supermarkets, now far fewer, as an example

It's not whining when it's factual.

Enterprise Architect.

Oh Developers! Earlier this year vacancy, 105k salary + benefits, hybrid but would agree on fully remote for a good candidate, less than 50 applications although widely shared on Linkedin, interviewed more than 20 people.

It's very difficult for young people to get first jobs, but then it's really on you.

if you have no job you have to take what's available, not "what meets criteria".

There should be no single vacancy before benefits become available.

So you keep saying but right now there are hundreds of vacancies in Morecambe.

no single vacancy before benefits become available?

how would that work in practice. Say I decided to employ someone, and put a job vacancy out there. Would this stop the benefits of everyone in the local area until it's taken?

I'm not sure you've thought that through

Agree. Sorry I just don’t buy it. Country wide there may be more applicants than jobs but I don’t really believe there is ‘nothing’ in any particular area. Just reads like people making excuses not to even try

I think they would rather have no job. Some people really are just lazy, and they’ll justify their joblessness to themselves however they can.

It’s so bad for you though and I think the longer you don’t work for the harder it is to go back to work, I think people get a bit afraid and lose their confidence. I’ve been lucky in that I’ve only been out of work for 2 months once in my career after redundancy. It was nice for 3 weeks but after that I realised I was becoming incredibly lazy and after 5 weeks I was starting to wonder how I ever even managed to get up at 6am 5 days a week and work 50 hours. If you haven’t worked for say a year then it must be quite a daunting thing and people will start to tell themselves anything to justify not trying.

Across the UK there are 2.5 job seekers for every vacancy, according to the ONS

Not enough jobs to go round no matter what you claim.

Ok so just give up? Don’t apply for any of the 700,000 vacancies because what’s the point?

Or after months and months of applying for jobs only to be ghosted or rejected or strung along does indeed knock your confidence and you live with a feeling of just setting yourself up for rejection time and time again.

I think a lot of people ‘politics-speak’ themselves into not even trying and adopting a defeatist attitude, as is very evident here. ‘What’s the point? AI’ ‘What’s the point? Immigrants’ ‘What’s the point? They all want a Masters’ etc etc

Not quite my profile but that is good to hear the roles are still out there, there’s definitely something off with recruitment if you’re not getting applicants for those types of positions.

Yes now anyone have a plan to create some decent well paying jobs. Not zero hours not minimum wage. Maybe they could also come up with some training schemes or apprenticeships to train the unemployed for those well paying jobs. Maybe we find a way to make caring well paid.

There are plenty of apprenticeships. My grandson is in the second year of a very god one. The NHS are also providing good apprenticeships.

Menopausalsourpuss · 06/10/2026 22:48

I live near Morecambe myself, have only lived here 4 years but have had 3 different jobs in completely different areas of work. I also tried caring for about a month but was unhappy with the way it's paid. But then a) I can drive, b) I have quite a few skills and experience that not everyone has and c) I don't have a mortgage anymore as I'm in my 50s so can afford to take lower paid work if necessary. So I think there is definitely a cohort of people who don't want to work and are quite entitled, enabled by the government but there is another cohort who are struggling to get a job particularly the young as I have seen with my own children - it is then in particular I feel for as it's MUCH harder than it was when I was young.
