She is absolutely right isn't she? Discussing the triple lock pension challenge and instead focusing on getting people into work. Do you agree with her ? Working 3 or 6 or 9 hours to then top up with benefits isn't the way forward (not including disabilities in here )

OK, I know a chap who has not worked for over 20 years.
He has paranoid schizophrenia.
When he is stressed, he becomes very unwell.

What job can he do?

How bad was his paranoid schizophrenia before spending 20 years out of work?

Ok so just give up? Don’t apply for any of the 700,000 vacancies because what’s the point?

Oh come on... do you think all 700k vacancies would actually be suitable for one job seeker?
By the time you filter out the requirements for qualifications and experience, then distance etc... you can be looking at not much at all.

I live near Morecambe myself, have only lived here 4 years but have had 3 different jobs in completely different areas of work. I also tried caring for about a month but was unhappy with the way it's paid. But then a) I can drive, b) I have quite a few skills and experience that not everyone has and c) I don't have a mortgage anymore as I'm in my 50s so can afford to take lower paid work if necessary. So I think there is definitely a cohort of people who don't want to work and are quite entitled, enabled by the government but there is another cohort who are struggling to get a job particularly the young as I have seen with my own children - it is then in particular I feel for as it's MUCH harder than it was when I was young.

it is much harder for young people because Labour increased NMW for them, introduced ER bill and hiked Employers NI simultaneously to fund those who don't want to work. Why would business take a risk with young person when they can get someone experienced for the same money?

Or after months and months of applying for jobs only to be ghosted or rejected or strung along does indeed knock your confidence and you live with a feeling of just setting yourself up for rejection time and time again.

Yes it can be tough, if you’re looking at the moment have you tried using ai to find positions it thinks you’ll get? Give it a go, it can come up with some quite novel ideas on re positioning,

I get constant sales calls from firms in Poland about offshoring there, their whole sales pitch is saving the NI of employing someone in the UK.

Because you’re confidently asserting that job hunting is impossible snd there are no jobs. Does this come from personal experience or not? I have been job hunting for a few weeks so can say I’m up to date with it.

There are jobs, but too many people wanting them.
I have lots of people in my family who have been looking for ages... some fresh out off uni.. and they are struggling big time.

So despite not being employed or looking for work (I have to draw my own conclusions now), you’re telling employed people who look for work that there are no jobs and
nobody will employ them? It feels like you’ve internalised a load of media scare stories and now you’re telling yourself you know everything?

Why do you want to know?

You are very consistent on all threads in saying that there are no jobs.

So I'd like to understand if you tried.

I completely understand that you might have very challenging personal situation, severe disabilities or full time caring for someone severely disabled, it's completely private.
But you say that there are no jobs, means you explore the market? or just try to convince yourself that there are no jobs? this is not the case. There are no fully flexible, remote, highly paid jobs that you can walk in with no skills or experience. But there are jobs in principle. What our welfare system enables is people turning their noses and being able to opt out and live of benefits. This shouldn't ever be an option.

No, I have seen from the people in my life how hard the job market is.
I have a cousin in her early 20s. It took her over a year to get a part time job in a cafe, and that was only because her mum was a regular and asked about it. My DP has a nephew who had a ton of barista experience yet could not get a job in a cafe to save his life. It took him about a year to get a job in a bed store... after applying for everything.
I have friends with young adult children who have left uni and can't catch a break anywhere.
Then there are the people in their 50s who have lost their jobs and can't find anything because employers are ageist.

It is not media scare stories at all. This is real life.

You have no idea what their job hunting is like though. How well they write their applications. How many jobs they apply for. Where they look. I don’t really believe that a conscientious, pleasant person absolutely cannot find a job for a year. I believe they can’t find the kind of job they want for a year.

2.5 job seekers to every vacancy. That is ONS figures.
it is tough out there. If you think it is not, then you need to check your privilege.
