She is absolutely right isn't she? Discussing the triple lock pension challenge and instead focusing on getting people into work. Do you agree with her ? Working 3 or 6 or 9 hours to then top up with benefits isn't the way forward (not including disabilities in here )

Is it a shocking belief to think that if you're able bodied and you're not caring for someone who has significant health issues that maybe the onus is on you to (in the long run) to be self sufficient and manage your own way through life?

Apparently so.

I agree. It’s amazing how it’s become so wide spread, how did it happen?

That makes no sense. What is the point here?

Benefits and endless safety nets
People not having kids (it forces you to ‘adult’ whether you want to or not, in most cases)
This culture of introspection and getting inside your own head too much

It’s quite worrying as you obviously can’t run an economy on simply coming up with new ways to tax an ever decreasing number of people who work.

Myremoteislost · 06/10/2026 21:03

I am currently job hunting and finding most companies want a list as long as your arm of skills and qualifications, only to offer a few pennies more than minimum wage. Lots of people want to work full time, and do, but wages just aren't enough to keep up with the COL.

Because employers have been taxed and employment legislated into that position. I too have been looking for a job and it is the worst I’ve ever seen the employment market, I’ve actually given up and staying put.

Jesus.
Where are all these well paying full time jobs?
You can't just reform welfare (stop supporting the most vulnerable) if there are not enough jobs (full time or otherwise) to go round and many of those jobs certainly do not pay enough to support someone.

remind me why did we import 1.6m low skilled workers on visas? and continue importing them every year?

I have read about someone looing for a cleaning job, and she got nowhere due to AI. English was not her first language, so she was "too slow"....

If somebody posts any village or town I can pretty much guarantee I will find jobs with no previous experience necessary

If I can’t I will change my username to something of your choice for a week 😂

OK, I know a chap who has not worked for over 20 years.
He has paranoid schizophrenia.
When he is stressed, he becomes very unwell.

What job can he do?

So, John who is unemployed after redundancy gets UC, including his rent covered while he is unemployed. After a few weeks he finds a job for 25 hours a week which he could take while he carries on seeking full time work. Except, he can't. Because under your new rule, his housing costs would stop, he'd get rent arrears and eventually an eviction notice. So he has to carry on not working at all until he finds a full time job?

Under my proposal John gets UC of e.g. 80% of his salary for e.g. 3 months (up to certain very generous limit, not talking about FTSE CEO package of course), then e.g. 60% for another 3 months, then 30% for one months and then that's it. Only if he's made redundant. Numbers indicative and need to be properly designed.
This will allow him to recover, retrain if needed and spend time looking for a suitable job.

If he hasn't found a job by that time then he has to do whatever job wider local area needs doing, cleaning streets, picking fruits, whatever.

If a person doesn't work in the area they should not be provided with housing support in this area, but moved to the cheapest housing area in the country. You will be shocked how many will find ability to work in this circumstances.

Massive savings from this approach to be redirected in social housebuilding and reduction of taxes.

London, I’m pretty senior but it’s just so competitive out there. Ive never really known it like this. I’m also a hiring manager, so I’m quite aware of the reasons.
