AIBU to reconsider a long friendship over support for education tax?

CoconutRumcake · 03/10/2026 10:46

A close friend of over 15 years last night unashamedly said she supported the children’s education tax. To put this in context, she is godmother to my ds and has seen first hand what damage this has done to children and families as well as her own sister losing her job when the school closed. She had maybe drank too much and has apologised over text this morning, but I really can’t shake the feeling that I don’t want to be around her.
AIBU -try and move past it
YANBU -it’s run it’s time

I didn’t say that it had, I literally said it was money back into the economy. It’s all there in my post.

It’s not that either but even Labour didn’t claim it would be. It was meant to improve state education.

You mean VAT on private school fees?

Yeah ditch her. She can make better friends.

You only have to look at the many comments on this thread alone sneering at 'little Arabella' having to mix with the riff raff' to see it. Literally no-one in the sector thinks that. I know dozens of parents, me included, who have struggled and got into debt to manage the fees because my children were unable to have their needs met in state. Its brilliant that many can, bit its a lie to say its available all. Pop on a few EBSA threads to see what I mean.

Extrapolating from "some people who support this are dicks" to "all people who support this do so from jealousy and spite" is just as much of a fallacy as equating "some people are dicks about people on disability benefits" to "all people who think the system needs reform want disabled people to die."

It's a shame one cannot rely on people understanding French because, as you imply, the original comment is more nuanced than the crude English translation 😄

You said cake, that is the known mistranslation. Brioche is much closer. Not sure if you are agreeing or not agreeing with me? I got the sentiment. I’m not fluent, but I am semi- fluent, albeit in the southern way - spent a lot of time in Marseille. Definitely nuanced. As exists in every language and when put through the microscope of history!

Whilst a member of the EU, education was exempt from VAT. It's only since leaving the EU that it has been possible for Labour to put VAT on private school fees.

Which raises the question of why the EU believes that education services are a good thing and should not pay VAT. And why many posters here believe that private schools parents should pay VAT.

The only logical explanation is envy and that "if I can't afford something then no one else should have it either ". Which reminds me of a great quote by George Orwell (who was very much on the left): "the left hate the rich more than they love the poor ".

Why is that the "only logical explanation"? The more logical explanation would be the real one - that it is in the best interests of the nation to remove the tax exemption.

CoconutRumcake · 03/10/2026 10:54

It’s not politics though, it’s not some abstract vague politics of envy for her as she’s seen first hand what it’s done to people I’d assumed she cared about. I just spent the evening trying to avoid talking to her, I’m not angry I just think I’m disappointed. For reference, she is a net tax payer herself.

Perhaps she also cares about people who can't afford school fees and thinks that there are more important challenges those funds could be directed to?

You don’t seem to know how taxes work.

They don't teach that in independent schools. Redistribution of wealth is a spiteful socialist plot best avoided. I recommend delegation of all matters of taxation to an accountant.

No, what removal of ‘charitable tax breaks’ on private schools ? I’m talking about the 20% tax on paying for children’s non state education. You sound a bit like her last night.

It was a charitable tax break.

Sounds like a fun evening at OP's yesterday. Shouting, silence, and sloshed on Merlot.

JHound · 03/10/2026 19:23

Referring to it as “taxing children’s education” is also spectacularly bonkers as nobody is forced to send their children to a fee paying school.

Falling out with someone because of a view on politics or a government policy is always ridiculous and always arrogant.

I abbreviated ‘Education and vocational training value added tax’ to education tax, I’m sure you’ll agree it’s less of a mouthful but is a good summary?

Have to say, I didn't see "descends into Marie Antoinette lore" as the way this thread would go.

sosomewhereelse · 03/10/2026 19:26

@CoconutRumcake You don't care about children though, do you? Because if you did, you'd be putting at least as much energy into lobbying for something that actually affects children on a much wider scale, like the massive inequality in our education system, as you are into being upset that your friend has a perfectly valid opinion about VAT on private school fees.

And I really don't understand the "parents should have a choice" argument. Of course parents should have choices about lots of things for their children. But why should "choice" mean that if you have enough money, you can buy your child access to a different and, in many cases, more advantageous education system? children's educational opportunities shouldn't depend on how much money their parents have.

If private schools are so wonderful and you're genuinely worried about children losing access to them, then surely the thing to campaign for is a state education system that is so good that you wouldn't dream of paying thousands a year to escape it. That's where I'd want all this energy to go. Better schools, better funding, better opportunities for ALL children.
But instead there's this weird insistence that the important thing is preserving the ability of relatively wealthy parents to "choose" private education. Well, yes, they can choose it because they can afford it. If you think your children would lose something valuable by not being able to go to private school, then campaign for that thing to exist in state schools too. Don't argue that your child should be able to retain access to it because you've got the money to pay for it.
Because a child whose parents can't afford private school doesn't have that "choice". Their parents can love them just as much, care about their education just as much and want the very best for them just as much, but they simply don't have the money. So it's not really parental choice, is it? It's wealth determining which educational opportunities your child gets.

If you genuinely care about children, why not lobby for excellent state schools . Campaign for a system where a child's opportunities aren't determined by their parents' income... but you won't do that because you dont actually care about children, you care about those of the privelidged group you are part of and about maintaining a system that so very obviously is unfair and reproduces inequality.

But aside from this (as you can probably tell) I am staunchly anti-private-school and would abolish private schools altogether if it were up to me. But somehow I've managed not been unfriended by my friends who send their children to private school! Because people can have political opinions I strongly disagree with without me deciding to ruin history and relationships that are built on more

Not a policy like this and not where someone has seen up close how damaging it has been.

No. It’s VAT. Plain and simple.

Bridgertonisbest · 03/10/2026 11:18

You really need to get over your victim mentality. Have a look at what is happen in state school and SEND education for real world examples of what is happening.

There are children going without education because there are no suitable places for them and when they become adults utterly unequipped for the work place half the country want them denied benefits.

It’s also not politics of envy, it’s recognising that ALL children deserve the same opportunities, not just the very privileged 7%.

And that 7% who are already lucky enough to attend private school not be getting tax breaks, benefiting from purchasing a premium service without paying the associated tax on it. Because that's what it is, a premium service.

Thats fair, but so far no-one has engaged with my point that its a fallacy to say that there is a free education available to all..again I direct you to EBSA threads. It is also true that there is far more inequality between the best and worst state schools that the best state and nearby private schools. I can just about scrape together the fees ti keep my son in a school he can cope in. I cant afford the mortgage in a catchment of a decent state school. Its a massive double standard.
