AIBU to do nothing after receiving a letter for the previous owner

I came home tonight to find a handwritten envelope that had been posted through Royal Mail, signed for delivery.
we hadn’t signed for it, it was just through the letterbox and had my address but no name in

opened the letter and it’s a letter addressed to the previous owner, a male who must be at least early 60’s ( not lived in the house for approx 7 years)
the letter is from a potential child of theirs saying they’ve been informed previous owner may be their biological dad and asking if he would get in touch

The letter is signed with first and last name but no contact number or address

would I be unreasonable to do nothing? I feel if I start trying to see if I have previous owners forwarding address still then I’m sticking my nose in something that doesn’t involve me.
equally, I feel if I do nothing then this person will assume previous owner has received the letter and chosen not to reach out.

what would you do, if anything?

Yes, legally you must return or forward.

How would your predecessor get in touch with the author if there are no contact details,

bobdylannumber1 · Yesterday 21:31

Yes, legally you must return or forward.

Not if they have no return or forwarding details.

I would contact the estate agent who sold you the house and see if they can forward the letter to the previous owner (if that person matches the one to whom the letter’s addressed).

HangryHippos · Yesterday 21:32

Given the magnitude of what it is, I think I’d try and at least find the sender on Facebook or something and let them know the previous owner moved several years ago. I would feel awful just doing nothing.

fashionqueen0123 · Yesterday 21:32

If you have their address, I would cross out yours and write theirs on and stick it back in the post box. That’s what I always do for previous owners. I couldn’t sit on that.

Boreded · Yesterday 21:33

How bizarre that they didn’t leave contact details, I’m invested now. Hopefully you get another one with actual details on it so you can let them know that the person has moved on

AllTheToddlers · Yesterday 21:33

How was the original sender hoping the person would get in touch with no address/email or phone number?

I really couldn’t ignore this and wouldn’t the person or the estate agent know the house was sold 7 years ago. Unless they mean it for your DP???

TheNavyDog · Yesterday 21:33

i returned all the post to sender after we moved. It was very annoying as I had paid for a reroute of all my post, but it was the right thing to do.

Either return to sender or, as that doesn’t seem to be possible in this case, contact the estate agent.

ETA it’s odd that the person has asked the previous owner to get in touch yet left no contact details. Are you 100% sure there aren’t any anywhere?

I would chuck it in the bin and forget about it

MissMoneyFairy · Yesterday 21:36

Why wasn't their name on the envelope if it was on the letter, how can anyone respond if there's no contact details, bizarre that it was supposed to be signed for but you didn't signsotheres noproof it was delivered

Jivby · Yesterday 21:37

It’s only illegal not to forward on it by not doing so you intend to maliciously cause the person harm. Which isn’t the case here.

AgentPidge · Yesterday 21:38

I would be doing my utmost to try to find the person it's intended for.

Thankxalotl · Yesterday 21:38

Can you check the electoral register and forward the letter?

Auntietoseven · Yesterday 21:39

If they didnt leave any contact details then they can hardly be disheartened to bot hear anything back....

Is it bad my first thought is scam?

Ineffable23 · Yesterday 21:39

I thought you were going to say it was a Tesco clubcard letter or whatever. I think I'd contact the estate agents for something like that.

Cuttertheduck · Yesterday 21:41

If you have the forwarding adress you forward it.
Anything else is on the previous owner

cbbo · Yesterday 21:45

Pass it on to the previous owner surely?!

Seaitoverthere · Yesterday 21:46

I am working with a couple of people who are in the process of trying to trace who their fathers were. It can take a lot for someone to reach out and I do think you need to try and get the letter to who it is intended for.

This. I don't understand why you wouldn't do something.

Same unless there were contact details.

There was no name on the envelope either. That and no contact details to respond seems a bit fishy to me. Or the legitimate sender is really quite thick.

What do you mean the estate agent?

why does it matter if the estate agent knew the house was sold 7 years who? (Which obviously they do)

Happyjoe · Yesterday 21:59

I am hoping the sender realises their mistake about getting in touch when didn't actually leave any details to do so - and writes again.
In the mean time I'd try and track down the chap, try EA? Social media?
