Should I share a referral bonus with a friend I recommended?

Posting here for traffic. My friend was out of work for 3 years and I managed to get her a role contracting at my company. If she gets made permanent, id be entitled to a referral bonus. Its been 2 years now and she may actually get a perm role. Do people then share it with the person or keep it for themselves?

No, it’s already win-win: they get a job and you get a bonus!

sleeeeeeepy · 02/10/2026 15:24

I think it’s reasonable to keep it but perhaps take your friend out for a meal to celebrate being made permanent and that can be your treat?

What does your friend have a funny attitude about?

She doesnt believe in helping others find roles eg: interview practice, because she believes you will only appreciate a job if you find it yourself, as you've done all the hard grafting to get it.

This role is way beneath her - 400 a day is a very low rate for someone at her level. The job market in her field is very tough. We needed someone to do a junior role at short notice so no interview or anything.

This is why it's prudent not to shoot one's mouth off. It's come back to bite her on the bum.

What are you on @Minorie ?

Astrangeeye · 02/10/2026 16:47

You have discussed this with her already to know that she knows about the bonus and has absolutely no expectation of receiving a bean of it?

poetryandwine · 02/10/2026 17:10

I am usually all for erring on the side of generosity, OP. But even I think this bonus is yours!

I would defo use some of it to take your friend out for a really nice meal, however. Champagne, good wine, or special cocktails if she would enjoy it, and her favourite foods in the not-inexpensive class. A great evening for you both and probably £150-300+ if you really get into the spirit of it. (Depending on where you live).

windinthewillows2 · 02/10/2026 17:12

You should share it. The friend who referred me made £5k and didn't share it. I was furious!

TY78910 · 02/10/2026 17:13

We always split 50/50

ChateauMargaux · 02/10/2026 17:24

If she was cleaning friends houses for what.. £25 per hour and is now on a salary of £100k that she thought was beneath her.. she should have bought you a meal, bottle of champagne, present..

If you really feel you need to share it, you could return the favour of buying her a sandwich!!

Still friends?!

whatsit84 · 02/10/2026 17:34

I did this with my brother and I shared it with him. I think I’d have done it for a friend too.

Nope!!!

windinthewillows2 · 02/10/2026 17:35

Nope!!!

Because of this alone?

Why did you think you were entitled to any of it?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 02/10/2026 17:45

Because without my superb performance in the interview he wouldn't have made anything.

No but he was an arse hole. I was his flat mate and he tried to crawl into bed with me once when he was drunk. His gf practically lived with us so I wasn't amused.

I would share it and have before

I don’t mean to be provocative, but you got a job out of it. If you already had a job, presumably the new one was an improvement. Your friend didn’t need to recommend you.

Why were you furious? Genuinely curious.

HettySunshine · 02/10/2026 19:10

I would share it. I am in a similar position and will absolutely be going halves with my friend who got the job.

poetryandwine · 02/10/2026 19:11

Cross post but my question stands. Without your interview performance you wouldn’t have a (better) job.
