Should I share a referral bonus with a friend I recommended?

Posting here for traffic. My friend was out of work for 3 years and I managed to get her a role contracting at my company. If she gets made permanent, id be entitled to a referral bonus. Its been 2 years now and she may actually get a perm role. Do people then share it with the person or keep it for themselves?

She never mentioned it, and ive just left her to her own devices with the job because she was severely depressed when out of work. Shes content here now, happy to have something. Shes financially secure too whereas I could do with the money!

It’s yours. You referred her. She didn’t refer herself.

Goldengirl123 · 30/09/2026 08:42

Keep it

Iocanepowder · 30/09/2026 08:46

I shared mine as it was a close friend, but I deducted some as some of my share was taken for student loan as well as tax.

Maddy70 · 30/09/2026 08:48

That's yours !

Minorie · 30/09/2026 09:11

Again - does your friend know that you will receive?

Randelling · 30/09/2026 09:12

She’s been a temp worker for 2 years?

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 30/09/2026 09:14

My husband's received a couple of referral payments. He doesn't share them, but I think he's sent a box of wine or similar to his colleagues to congratulate them.

Right so we are getting to the nub of why you have asked

she is expecting a share, correct?

They’ve been paying an agency for two years for a temp worker?!

nomas · 30/09/2026 09:47

How likely would she has been to get the job without you?

If unlikely, then I would treat her to a congratulatory lunch for being made perm.

If likely, I would give her £500.

Not expecting a share at all @Randelling . They have been paying her directly , not via an agency - but i assume its all temp.

@nomas 100% she wouldnt have got the job, or even any job as the market was so tough. I had to convince her about this because i could see she was depressed and twice she didnt follow up with my contacts. Only on the third time did she follow up, and because they were desperate, they took her-

It’s a bonus for you from the company, because you found the company a new employee and that saved them on recruitment agencies/advertising costs. It’s your money. She didn’t take the job as a favour to you! You found her the job as a favour to her. As it happens your employer is also grateful to you so rewards you with a bonus, that’s nothing to do with her. I’d definitely keep it.

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/09/2026 10:33

No chance I’d share. I have had a referral bonus years ago and the person who got the job commented “you should share that with me, you wouldn’t have it without me getting the job.”

I just told him he wouldn’t have the job and good salary if I didn’t refer, as the job didn’t go external. Cheeky fucker!!

Boreded · 30/09/2026 10:34

She didn’t refer herself…her bonus was the job

Butchyrestingface · 30/09/2026 10:38

How much is it?

I have never been in a position where I've either referred someone else or been referred by them. I don't think I would expect someone to share their bonus with me. Unless it was megabucks, which I highly doubt is the case here.

CorporalJohn · 30/09/2026 11:25

Keep it. Why on earth would you share it?

Favouritefruits · 30/09/2026 11:28

Well we kept ours when my husband got his friend a job and what a mistake that was! You would think we stole the money and pissed on his grave the way people shunned us!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 30/09/2026 11:33

It’s customary to share it amongst people I know.

Silverbirchleaf · 30/09/2026 11:47

Maybe if she becomes permanent, you could take her out to celebrate. But it’s your money.

Then definitely don't share it. She is benefiting to the tune of tens of thousands a year from your efforts.

I bet people wouldn't expect a man to share it.

Randelling · 30/09/2026 12:00

Good friend
She knows about the bonus
She is not applying any pressure

Yep, I’d definitely give her a share. £500 of the £3k

Randelling · 30/09/2026 12:01

You don’t seem to have a huge amount of professional respect for her if you think the company “only” took her because they were “desperate”
