Should I share a referral bonus with a friend I recommended?

Posting here for traffic. My friend was out of work for 3 years and I managed to get her a role contracting at my company. If she gets made permanent, id be entitled to a referral bonus. Its been 2 years now and she may actually get a perm role. Do people then share it with the person or keep it for themselves?

You keep it.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 30/09/2026 06:38

Keep it, she’s benefitted by having a job.

Piglet89 · 30/09/2026 06:39

We always share it this end.

Franxi · 30/09/2026 06:40

I’ve always shared it.

mommybear1 · 30/09/2026 06:40

Keep it.

RumPidgeon · 30/09/2026 06:41

You referred - it’s yours to keep. Like a finder’s fee.

Randelling · 30/09/2026 06:41

I’d share without hesitation

KnickerlessFlannel · 30/09/2026 06:41

I sent my friend 10%

itsgettingatadchill · 30/09/2026 06:41

It’s yours op. Your friend was out of work and you got her a job, which I presume she needed.
Has she mentioned the bonus?

Turophiles · 30/09/2026 06:43

You keep it. I mean, you did her the favour of getting her a job after a long period of unemployment!

Minorie · 30/09/2026 06:44

She never mentioned it, and ive just left her to her own devices with the job because she was severely depressed when out of work. Shes content here now, happy to have something. Shes financially secure too whereas I could do with the money!

Does she know about the referral bonus?

somanychristmaslights · 30/09/2026 07:00

How much is it? Just being curious, but I’d keep it. She can get a bonus if she then refers someone.

Silverbirchleaf · 30/09/2026 07:02

You keep it. It’s a bonus for you.

Her reward is the job.

pumpkinpielatte · 30/09/2026 07:04

You keep it- the entire point of it is- she refers someone else and gets her own bonus.

HappiestSleeping · 30/09/2026 07:06

I have been in this position, but the other way round and without the referral bonus. My friend put me up for a job while I was looking, although he got no bonus.

It was a great step for me, so when I got the job I bought him something significant to say thank you. I would not have expected a share of any referral bonus.

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 30/09/2026 07:08

I haven’t heard of anyone sharing, keep it! As others have said you’ve helped her in finding a job and the company is paying you a fee they would have otherwise paid out to a recruiter

ViaRia01 · 30/09/2026 07:08

I think you keep it. If she wants a referral payment then she can refer someone.

10% made me laugh. I do see the logic and I’m sure friend was not unhappy to receive it but for me I just think it’s 50/50 or nothing.

NewGoldFox · 30/09/2026 07:15

You keep it.

Shedmistress · 30/09/2026 07:18

After 2 years she is as permanent as anyone as she'd be liable for redundancy if they end the arrangement.

Presumably you'd be paying tax on any bonus so if you gave her 50% then youd be getting much less than her as you'd have paid 20% tax or even more on the whole lot.

CrowMate · 30/09/2026 07:19

It wouldn’t occur to me to even mention it.

VainAbigail · 30/09/2026 07:22

I gave my friend half but that was my choice and she never asked or hinted.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 30/09/2026 08:19

Keep it, it yours

ACynicalDad · 30/09/2026 08:22

Maybe take her out for lunch or dinner?

dontgiveafigso · 30/09/2026 08:23

Keep it
