Swimming pool build

We are so considering a move out of London, to Kent. We’d like to have an outdoor pool built in the grounds. Any idea how much this would cost and how long it would take?

We use an air source heat pump which is quite cheap to run. We don't have a fancy cover, but a good simple one. Putting that on when not in use makes a huge difference to maintaining the temperature.

We have a non-chlorine system. We don't have any help unless there is a major problem with the pump/heater. DH does any regular maintenance required and it honestly seems pretty minimal to me, after a period early on when he had to get the hang of it. Well, apart from this year when he had to do some significant structural work on it. But that saved us the best part of 50k!

Edited

So basically no hassle and cheap if someone else does all the work and you're handy at structural engineering.

Maybe consider a moat instead ?

That way you can keep the undesirables out and have a place to swim as well.

Plus you can go round and round without end rather than having to do flips.

But I like doing flips. YABVU to not consider my need for a rest.

GasPanic · 30/09/2026 12:48

I don't move in wealthy circles, but the only person I knew that had a pool said it was the best day of their life when they had it filled in.

Maybe that's a comment on the horrific nature of pools, or the crap quality of their life. Hard to tell.

That said, it was more of a loafing/lounging pool than a proper swimming pool.

You sound like you started this thread for those responses. We aren't green eyed monsters. We are happy and possibly richer than you, so we don't need to start a thread like this to make us feel better about ourselves.

Exactly. It’s all very goady isn’t it

Thanks everyone who replied with a helpful answer (and lol at the jealous ones 😂). Asked Mumsnet for real people answers, and popped in AIBU for traffic. I have asked AI, and also been helpful- lots of things we need to consider. It’s telling me about £100k which seems to be roughly what you lovely (well, the non bitter and jel) folk are saying xx

Oh for heavens sake. Just don’t comment if you can’t help. What size are you hoping for? Deep end or not? Liner? Fibreglass? Tiled? You’ll need an air source heat pump and I’d recommend an electric solar safety cover. The cover alone will be 20-30k. If you go for a small 10x4 with a liner with an air source heat pump you’ll be in for £150k without blinking.

About 80k to 100k. If you use it once a day, for a whole year, each swim would cost you about £230 . . .

Yeah . . .

Not much cheaper than the council baths, then.

dustabsorber · 30/09/2026 12:56

Where are you going to get the water from?

BritsAbroadly · 30/09/2026 12:57

It’s also worth thinking of safety. No one thinks it will be them until it is. Drowning in children is almost silent and usually happens with adults nearby. You need to learn to recognise what it looks like. Everyone thinks someone else is watching. Someone has to be the designated pool watcher. I have very sober summers next to our pool because you cannot drink and be responsible for kids in the pool.

I can’t see any jealous ones (maybe you hoped for that, hence AIBU rather than Property forum?) . I see helpful ones and a couple of piss taking ones.

You can fill a permanent structure even under the hosepipe ban.

CasperGutman · 30/09/2026 14:19

The cost will vary a lot depending on local factors like how easy the site is to access with heavy equipment, and whether spoil excavated can be used in the landscaping on site or has to be carted away and disposed of. Some of the posts on here provide a starting point, but there's really no substitute for getting a contractor to quote for your specific project.

she didn’t come across as jealous. She was witty.

anyway. This conversation is out of my tax bracket, I’ll pop off to find a home bargains thread.

No, she recycled the same old comments that get rolled out in every thread that concerns higher expenditure because, for some reason that definitely isn’t envy of course, she felt the need to make a catty comment about an innocuous subject.

Enjoy the threads relevant to you.

It’s worth taking a look at some of the subreddits about pools. They’re mainly US based, but will still give you things to consider.

Wouldn’t it be easier just to move to a Kentish coastal town (Whitstable is v. trendy). You can easily swim May to October, with no expenses, and no worry about a cracked tile or the ph of the pool.

Let’s ignore the sewage….

Livinginvnam · Yesterday 15:03

Having rented a house with a pool, you never use it anywhere as much as you might think, and the energy costs and cleaning time takes up far too much for the benefit you get. Much better to just buy a pool membership that allows you to swim whenever you like.

For some reason im on an american facebook grpup for Oveground pools im neither American or have space for an overground pool but im fascinated by them
Some people have a great set up with Decks and diving boards
They are proper pools not overgrown paddling pools but they appear to be a lot cheaper than sunken pools .

Does the swimming pool self-destruct after a year?

I would go for a more natural swimming pond style

That's just inviting Loch Nessie into your grounds...

Yes, overground pools are a lot cheaper.

We currently have a resin overground that came with the house that’s 18 x 40 x 54. If we wanted to install the same now we could do it for less than $20k I imagine. An in ground professional installation of the same size will cost $100k+

theemmadilemma · Yesterday 15:50

Christ, I thought the figures were expensive, but I just asked ChatGPT what ours would cost if were starting from scratch and apparently around 95k Euros (I'm in Europe not UK).

Definitely great to have though. :)
