Swimming pool build

We are so considering a move out of London, to Kent. We’d like to have an outdoor pool built in the grounds. Any idea how much this would cost and how long it would take?

Thanks everyone who replied with a helpful answer (and lol at the jealous ones 😂). Asked Mumsnet for real people answers, and popped in AIBU for traffic. I have asked AI, and also been helpful- lots of things we need to consider. It’s telling me about £100k which seems to be roughly what you lovely (well, the non bitter and jel) folk are saying xx

I don't think there have been any bitter or jealous posts actually OP.
Some rather amusing ones.
I think we all know there is a good section of posters on MN who are extremely wealthy.

Stinkybooks · 29/09/2026 20:47

I don’t think any of the comments on your thread are bitter or “jel” really @crackerjackbaby
I think most are confused that you didn’t just google. Asking here just seems like boasting.
Plus asking in Aibu “for traffic” is annoying. And silly too. Posting in a suitable topic would be just as visible in Active Conversations. And that way you’d get a lot more answers that is genuinely helpful.

The one about the tiara and stables? The one about the moat? Little green eyed monsters.

And another jealous poster. Trying to hide behind a sensible post. If every poster used google instead of Mumsnet then a) Mumsnet would be empty, and b) google doesnt give real life views. Yes I could have gone to Reddit but I chose to come here. Sorry you can’t afford a pool. But I’m not sorry I can 🏊

I can give you a serious answer. We installed a 10m x 4m ceramic pool at the beginning of the year. We got 2 quotes for high end pools - solar safely covers, heat pump etc and they both came in around £120k including VAT. There is also the cost of digging the hole, muck away plus electrics and any landscaping (so probably another £10k). It was super fast to install- once ground prepped they drop it in (so you need access) and it is up and running within the week.
We run it off solar and it is still expensive and stuff like chlorine is also a lot BUT we’ve used it a lot since April and will probably continue to do so until mid October.
We didn’t have a summer holiday but felt like we did as spent so much time lounging by the pool.
It is obviously an insane amount of money but if you can afford it I think you will love it - especially as I imagine summers will only get hotter.

Holeymoley28 · 29/09/2026 20:55

Probably at least £70k.

To quote TikTok holla at the pool boy he also does resin now 😅

Nightingalemoonshine · 29/09/2026 20:56

people spend a lot on holidays over the course of their lives. I don’t see why you can’t look at the cost of a swimming pool in the same way. My grandparents had a wonderful one and it gave me and my cousins immeasurable pleasure - better than anything else I had as a child really. It was unheated!

That's pretty unpleasant OP.
I think you are taking the amusing comments far too seriously.

Hankunamatata · 29/09/2026 21:01

I think maintenance is more of a cost issue with getting water quality right etc. Def look at it being under shelter so you can use it all year round.

Weirdly, you sound more bitter than anyone else. Certainly like you have a chip on your shoulder. Goodness knows why.

PicaK · 29/09/2026 21:14

There are some great uk FB groups about this. As a new build owner you want to look at having a shallow bit you can sit in. The most fun about having a pool is sharing it. Watching friends and family have fun. Just so lovely
They all wear suncream though... And that stresses your filter. Think about changing and an outdoor shower. And it being slippy inside when they go for drinks and the loo. And buy towels
Lots of towels.

You sound like you started this thread for those responses. We aren't green eyed monsters. We are happy and possibly richer than you, so we don't need to start a thread like this to make us feel better about ourselves.

lol. I’m not jealous. Jealous of what?
Im very happy in my little 2 bed terrace. I’ve got everything I need/want.
Im jealous of people who are a size 10 and gorgeous but people who own a swimming pool? Na. Not even vaguely. Money can be fun to have/spend but it’s no guarantee of happiness, joy, love, etc

Its rather amusing that you can’t differentiate between jealousy and wry humour

Mirsine · 29/09/2026 21:27

Id only be a “bitter green eyed monster” if you built a sauna, steam room and spa treatment area with a live in masseuse along with your pool. But just a pool? Nah.

mtobrokeme · 29/09/2026 21:35

Ah OP, you must know that unless you’re on the bones of your arse you shouldn’t be asking questions on Mumsnet! If you’d have asked which supermarket sell the cheapest tin of beans then that would have been fine but how very dare you have money! You been told to ‘read the room’ yet?!

Piglet89 · 29/09/2026 21:47

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 29/09/2026 13:55

Mine cost a similar amount to my stables but less than my diamond tiara. Hope that helps.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👏

But the original poster sounds more bitter than anyone else? I don't know why. They sound scathing and a bit spiteful. I'm glad they can have their own swimming pool. They sound very much like they look down on people with less money. Just because some of us don't brag about wealth, doesn't mean we don't have it. I think it's distateful to brag.

TheChosenTwo · 29/09/2026 22:18

Well I’m jealous op 😂
I’d love a pool but our garden isn’t big enough, planning a move in about 4 years time and a pool is on my shopping list!
I swim outdoors in a lake all year round so I wouldn’t need a heated pool in the winter, but I love swimming outside so hopefully one day I’ll be ringing around getting quotes myself! In the meantime if you are anywhere near me in the SE and manage to get your pool built please let me come and swim in it in the winter!!

But why use AIBU for traffic? First, it's not an AIBU question. And second, you must realise that there's only going to be a small proportion of the Mumsnet usership who will be able to shed any light on your question, especially as, third - Google would have given you a much better idea as to likely cost.

The obvious conclusion, drawn by many, is that you're showing off. At the very least, have a bit of cloth ear given how many people are suffering in a cost of living crisis.

JaceLancs · 29/09/2026 22:30

My IL had a fab outdoor pool which we all loved but it was quite expensive to maintain - they are no longer with us and checked out their old house on right move not long ago - new owners got rid of it
I would love a pool indoor or outdoor but couldn’t justify cost

I take the piss out of all sorts of people. It doesn’t mean I’m jealous of them - usually the opposite.

The stables/tiara comment made me laugh out loud.

Laughing at people who couldn't afford a 100K pool and calling them jealous?

Well they do say money cant buy you class

Obeseandashamed · 29/09/2026 22:40

There’s a great group on fb about home pools in the UK. You’d be better off posting there OP.

I know why people on here do this. But they look stupid . self absorbed and seem to lack any sort of empathy with people that are struggling money wise.
From my experience, people I know with a lot of money would never start such a thread, let alone goad people. Money doesn't buy class.
