Neighbours sleeping on our driveway

We have new neighbours in the house next door (shared driveway) they are only there for 6-9 months as they are emigrating (just waiting for visas etc). They have a house full of stuff like normal, but don’t own a bed. They claim they can’t be bothered to get a bed, so are sleeping each night in their camper van on the driveway.

Now, I think this is fine obviously for a few weeks while they wait for furniture or as they approach the end and are selling their stuff - but nearly a year living on the driveway- weird! (Especially given that it’s also OUR driveway, and so they are sleeping really close to our front door).

It’s not like it affects us, we just find it weird! We’d never say anything and what people do in their house is their business. Especially in the morning when putting the children in the car at 0715 for the school run - we find ourselves telling the children not to talk as we don’t want to wake people up etc.

So, what do people think - AIBU, or do you also think this is mega weird???

Just to clarify, we aren’t bothered and they do us no harm - I was just curious as to whether people also thought it was weird. We were havIng the discussion with friends who came over as they didn’t think it was weird at all - I was curious as to what the masses thought.

by shared driveway, I mean that it is between our two houses - they park on one side and we on the other. No problem with their parking, and not the ‘theme’ it that makes sense.

Im amused by the cannabis farm comments 😆- it’s certainly not that. It’s a house rented to us by our employers, they 100% cannot do drugs as part of the job. They also have plenty of cash - good jobs, and voluntary moving to an expensive country (not Dubai or the ME!). They have stated that they can’t be bothered to get a bed, that they find it comfy etc.

I would never try to stop them and am very happy for ‘live and let live’ - I just think it’s weird 😆

If they're getting drug tested for work, no wonder they're living outside if it's a grow house.

Also accounts for them having lots of cash. Who carries a lot of cash these days?

Beds are cheap and you say they have lots of cash. I don't buy their story.

You knock on their door- or van- and ask them in for a coffee saying there is something you need to discuss.

No need to jump from complete silence to a court case.

But you don’t think knocking on the door and showing them the deeds is enforcing anything, surely? They will likely just ignore you. If they cared about things like that they’d be living inside the house

drug testing as part of work is only relevant if they smoke it? They’re not going to pick up someone growing it from a work place test

Wow... Waiting for visas for a long time. Never of heard of such a thing - I thought you just walk into any country now and Bob's your uncle.

😆 which town is this where a lot of people have the arrangement where parents are sleeping in campervans because the houses are too small?

you might want to educate yourself a bit more about the real world.

You are in for a shock.

Ofcoursenot26 · 28/09/2026 02:04

Yes, it's weird. Carry on exactly as you would if they were not there at all.

GarlicSomething · 28/09/2026 02:25

I'm curious. Do they go indoors to shower, have breakfast and get changed for work? Evenings and weekends, do they live in the house and then retire to the van at bedtime? Are they going out to the van in their pyjamas, or maintaining some complicated routine of moving clothes from one location to the other??

They must have a heck of a nice bed in their van!

Ohdearnotthisagain · 28/09/2026 02:25

I would not be keeping quiet. If they choose this then they deal with the car doors slamming, kids noise etc.

SunnyOchreNewt · 28/09/2026 02:29

They could be breaching your local council planning or caravan site regulations. And if it can be seen from a public road, the caravan needs to be taxed and MOTd.

mathanxiety · 28/09/2026 02:36

Stop telling the kids to be quiet and not wake the people sleeping in their van on the drive.

Invite friends around for loud, late weekend parties.

Get a yappy dog.

Treetreetreetree · 28/09/2026 05:28

Never buy a house with a shared anything because people are mad! Sorry OP this is very odd.

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 28/09/2026 05:38

It's really weird, yes.

are they sticking to their side of the driveway and does their van impede your use of it (including by visitors, if you don't have a car yoirself)? Is the shared bit of driveway an access to the rear of your property that you can't use with their van there?

If they aren't impeding your use of your property then yes it's weird but not really sufficient grounds for complaint.

I think you are going too far in unrequired niceness by trying to keep the kids quiet. They are not entitled to undisturbed rest if they are sleeping there. If they want undisturbed rest they have some nice brick walls with excellent sound-mufflimg qualities just there, and there's no point you telling your kids to be quiet anyway because other passers-by won't be, so stop.

Beesandhoney123 · 28/09/2026 05:57

Weird. Do they shuffle out from the house in their pjs at the end of the evening? Where do they get ready for work?
I would not be being quiet. Just behave normally. The bed story is nonsense. If they were that hard up they wouldnt be renting a house to live in.

When they are in the van, pop round the back and peer in windows. Do you have a ladder? Disguise yourself as a window cleaner, get ' the wrong house on the terrace' and have a look.

Lucyintheskywithnoidea · 28/09/2026 06:19

The bed in my van is comfier than my house (no loo though!).

I wouldn’t worry about keeping dc quiet. It’s their choice to sleep there so they should expect their neighbours to move about normally.

HighHeelsRedLips · 28/09/2026 06:22

It’s weird of them and it’s weird you’re saying “but nearly a year living on the driveway”. You need to toughen up and tell them it’s not on. Why can’t they book into a premier inn or BnB? Caravan park? What do the house deeds say? Is it ok to pitch up on the shared driveway and bed down for nearly a year?

There's no problem with their parking!

again, WHY is this bothering you?

They park on a shared driveway, where they are allowed to park.
What difference does it make to anyone where they sleep?

ItsAlwaysTwins · 28/09/2026 08:56

It’s quite odd. Why not just get an inflatable bed and sleep in the house?

Calm down sweetie. That was my first and only post so what’s with the “again, blah, blah, blah” comment. It’s certainly bothering you isn’t it. Enjoy the rest of your day. Treat yourself to a bit of cake, it might make you feel better.

randomusernam · 28/09/2026 11:02

Why are you doing that? It is their choice to sleep on the drive but you don’t have to change your behaviour for there odd behaviour

Bitzee · 28/09/2026 11:30

So weird! Especially when they could an airbed or mattress on the floor so cheaply. I suppose there’s nothing you can do if they’re not blocking the parking but I certainly wouldn’t be telling the kids to be quiet on the way to school or anything like that. If they mind the noise up to them to go sleep in the house like normal people.

loving the passive agressive post, but if you can't answer my question "sweetie", why do you even bother posting 😂.

You have no answer, fine, no need to try to start a fight, Sweetie.. 😉
