Neighbours sleeping on our driveway

We have new neighbours in the house next door (shared driveway) they are only there for 6-9 months as they are emigrating (just waiting for visas etc). They have a house full of stuff like normal, but don’t own a bed. They claim they can’t be bothered to get a bed, so are sleeping each night in their camper van on the driveway.

Now, I think this is fine obviously for a few weeks while they wait for furniture or as they approach the end and are selling their stuff - but nearly a year living on the driveway- weird! (Especially given that it’s also OUR driveway, and so they are sleeping really close to our front door).

It’s not like it affects us, we just find it weird! We’d never say anything and what people do in their house is their business. Especially in the morning when putting the children in the car at 0715 for the school run - we find ourselves telling the children not to talk as we don’t want to wake people up etc.

So, what do people think - AIBU, or do you also think this is mega weird???

If the camper vsn has electric hook up plugged into the house or diesel powered heating it needn't be cold in winter. We go away in ours at New Year and it's really cosy.

I can see a couple of posts saying this now and I'm not a camper van expert so fair enough. But in that case why not just save the expense of a house, and live in the camper van for a few months? Why have a house you're paying rent on just sitting there?

zanahoria · 27/09/2026 14:44

The threads here often go over the same old themes but this is a new one.

Certainly not an issue I have ever had to ponder before

That could definitely attract local authority interest.

Heating in a van? Why?

Error404FucksNotFound · 27/09/2026 14:48

I'd assume their house is rat or mouse infested, or fleas, bedbugs or black mould and they're telling a face saving story.

FedUpCelery · 27/09/2026 15:00

Odd but harmless.
Maybe it's more pleasant living in their campervan than surrounded by packing boxes.

Will they be adopting van life in their new country?

SquirrelSoShiny · 27/09/2026 15:01

Not buying it. Have they a cannabis farm in the house? I would get onto the landlord to be honest.

RampantIvy · 27/09/2026 15:04

I don't know why they don't buy a cheap second hand bed from the British Heart Foundation. They can donate it back when they have finished with it.

SevenYellowHammers · 27/09/2026 15:08

I wouldn’t bother to say anything. Unless the campervan was bouncing about first thing in the morning when I was taking kids to school. But if you see any helicopters with heat seeking equipment flying over their empty bedroom, that might be different.

LowAndSlow · 27/09/2026 15:09

My money is on it being a grow house. Much cheaper to put belongings into storage and pitch up at an all year campsite with showers, laundry etc.

LancashireButterPie · 27/09/2026 15:16

Their bedroom is a cannabis farm/puppy farm or they have some poor sod tied up in there.

Mark my words.

AllezAllezPronto · 27/09/2026 15:23

You should refer to your house deeds.

Ours prohibits any means of sleeping in the drive or having a caravan etc there.

They are possibly breaking the terms of their rental assuming they are renting.

AllezAllezPronto · 27/09/2026 15:25

I'm not clear how long they have lived there.

If they own the house and share a drive surely they aren't buying and selling again within 9 months?

so is this a rental and is your house rented or owned?

SilverPink · 27/09/2026 15:37

Have you noticed a strong smell of weed wafting your way at all?

Ohyoudodoyou · 27/09/2026 15:39

I’d just tell other people that the people n the van are my private security as I am very important

FuschiaMyArse · 27/09/2026 15:40

I voted YABU because it their business where they sleep, but I might start talking loudly to the kids in the morning as we get in the car!

SALaw · 27/09/2026 15:43

It wouldn’t be my choice and I don’t get the not being bothered to buy a basic bed for a 9 month period, but as a neighbour I couldn’t care less. I wouldn’t be telling kids to be any quieter than you’d be if they were inside their house at 7.15am. If it bothers them they can get a bed and sleep indoors!

Lugol · 27/09/2026 15:45

They could get a Japanese floor mattress and roll it up and take it with them when they go.

I know that's missing the point though.

Bedlingtonwarrior · 27/09/2026 15:55

They could buy a cheap blow up airbed for about £10-15 especially at this time of the year as winter approaches !!!
Otherwise appears strange

SunshineAndFizz · 27/09/2026 15:56

I’d tell the kids to be as loud as they like. Might encourage the neighbours to sleep indoors.

CombatBarbie · 27/09/2026 15:59

Definitely weird, but I wouldnt be telling my children to keep the noise down in mornings, thats the downfall for them if they choose to sleep there.

It’s difficult though because even if the house deeds say that what are you going to do? Sue them?

also not sure how willing I’d be to get in a legal dispute with neighbours possibly working for a drug cartel 😬

You knock on their door- or van- and ask them in for a coffee saying there is something you need to discuss.

No need to jump from complete silence to a court case.

Dontbesonosy · 27/09/2026 16:27

I voted YABU for tiptoing around so you don't wake them. If theyre going to sleep on the drive, they have to deal with normal morning noise.

Missedvocation · 27/09/2026 16:37

Just to clarify, we aren’t bothered and they do us no harm - I was just curious as to whether people also thought it was weird. We were havIng the discussion with friends who came over as they didn’t think it was weird at all - I was curious as to what the masses thought.

by shared driveway, I mean that it is between our two houses - they park on one side and we on the other. No problem with their parking, and not the ‘theme’ it that makes sense.

Im amused by the cannabis farm comments 😆- it’s certainly not that. It’s a house rented to us by our employers, they 100% cannot do drugs as part of the job. They also have plenty of cash - good jobs, and voluntary moving to an expensive country (not Dubai or the ME!). They have stated that they can’t be bothered to get a bed, that they find it comfy etc.

I would never try to stop them and am very happy for ‘live and let live’ - I just think it’s weird 😆

It's very odd and I wouldn't be keeping quiet in the driveway for them.
