What happens at your wedding if you can't dance?

Thinking more of the bride really, from the weddings I've been to it seems to be the norm/expectation for the bride to hit the middle of the dancefloor, sashaying and strutting around to the typical party hits, life and soul of the party.

I don't do that sort of dancing and I wouldn't feel comfortable with it, without wanting to sound like a killjoy. Not sure what to do, I really cannot do that sort of dancing.

My dh has two left feet. We did a “wedding March” - basically just linked arms and walk d around the edge of the dance floor, once ourselves, then the wedding party followed on the second turn, then everyone else. It was fun and easy.

My friend is deaf.

We had a pub quiz at her wedding instead of a disco. Really great fun.

You don't have to dance if you don't want to but honestly I don't think the guests and your friends would be expecting a professional performance. Just sway about a bit to one of your favourite tunes and then get everyone clapping or joining you on the dance floor. Hopefully the mood and joy of the occasion will carry you through

Now that sounds like fun 😊

We had a ceilidh, partly because I didn't want the awkward first dance experience. Also because I love ceilidh dancing.

It was great and having a "caller"made it easier for everyone who wanted to participate.

That's a good idea. As a guest I would join in whereas I never do for a disco

You don’t have to dance! I always tell my DC that daddy has danced with me once ever and that was our first dance at our wedding! We deliberately picked a slow easy to dance to song so he could cope.
He just doesn’t dance, I danced with family/friends.
Nothing is compulsory at weddings

Doggymummar · 27/09/2026 09:53

Evening dos are so cringe, we didn't have one, ergo no dancing

KassandraOfSparta · 27/09/2026 09:55

We had a ceilidh. Great fun and no need for "spontaneous" dancing which makes me cringe.

We had a small Gretna Green wedding, a sit down meal then everyone buggered off. We went on a couple of days to Edinburgh, a couple of guests did the same in different places (Lake District and Aviemore from memory) and others went home. ‘Twas great!

MrsShawnHatosy · 27/09/2026 09:57

We didn’t have an evening do. We left on our honeymoon from the reception in the traditional way.

Don't have a first dance. Get everyone on the dancefloor for a group photo then get the dj to start the music everyone is then on the dancefloor so starts dancing. No awkwardness

You just don't! Your friends and family would surely hate you to be uncomfortable. One wedding I went to had no dancing as the bride and groom wanted a different activity. No one objected! Make your wedding about you. They're always the best ones

Can you say what this activity was?
I am getting married and I hate dancing. Both of us do. But we love having fun, playing games etc (we have hosted bingo nights and beetle drives in the past so we love getting people together).

Neither of the two best weddings I've been to had a disco. One had a ceilidh which brilliant, the caller got everyone up dancing with complete strangers. The other had no dancing at all, just a string quartet playing lovely music, and the whole thing was over by 9.30pm.

Weirdpig · 27/09/2026 10:18

We had a lunch, which also meant no need for guests to book a hotel.

A friend has a ceilidh and that was probably the best wedding we've been to.

I've never been to a wedding where the Bride 'sashays and struts' on the dancefloor. The first dance is usually a slow song, and the couple just slow dance to it for a verse or so until everyone else joins in, surely?

I can attest, like OP, I've been to plenty of weddings where the bride truly is strutting and sashaying around all night. It is their big day, after all, and some people really relish being the centre of attention. I've been to a wedding where the bride had four distinct outfit changes - wedding gown, reception dress, cocktail dress for the late night food and cocktail truck, and then a "dancing dress" until the wee hours of the morning!

We had a disco at our wedding but didn't have a First Dance. I cant even remember what happened with the dancing but the dance floor was full and I did dance a bit during the evening just didn't do the First Dance
