What happens at your wedding if you can't dance?

Thinking more of the bride really, from the weddings I've been to it seems to be the norm/expectation for the bride to hit the middle of the dancefloor, sashaying and strutting around to the typical party hits, life and soul of the party.

I don't do that sort of dancing and I wouldn't feel comfortable with it, without wanting to sound like a killjoy. Not sure what to do, I really cannot do that sort of dancing.

Just don’t dance. We didn’t have a dance floor, we had good music and chatting. The best bit about it being your wedding is that you can skip all the bits you don’t want

We had a ceidhl (sorry totally forgot how to spell it) where they told you how to dance. Was wonderful. So many people on the dance floor.

This is a good idea and what we did. My partner has two left feet.

Dorim · 27/09/2026 07:59

Another suggestion of a ceilidh - the caller will tell you what to do

curious79 · 27/09/2026 08:00

Many guests like a bit of dancing. And many like to see a first dance but yours could be some slow swaying for about 30 seconds but where you prime bridesmaids friends to leap on and join you after a dj makes the switch to something more upbeat?! There are ways to fake it I guess

MargoLeadbetterisQueen · 27/09/2026 08:00

I've been to plenty of weddings where there was no dancing, still had a great time.
I often find a bride and groom "first dance" a bit embarrassing.

Sherararara · 27/09/2026 08:01

It’s your wedding, do what you want. It’s not obligatory to have a dj or dancing. We didn’t and we had a great wedding.

WonderingWanda · 27/09/2026 08:02

What about hiring a mobile casino for the evening.

Even better! My sister had a conjuror - he was very good.

When I was younger I used to worry about getting married because I'm such a terrible dancer. I never married though so I spent a lot of headspace on a non-existent problem. Ironically, now I wouldn't give a crap what anyone else thought or said about it.

We didn't want dancing so had a restaurant event only

Ditto

We didn’t even have a best man’s speech! (He was 6)
If ever the time to say ‘you do you’ it’s at your wedding!!

Blueuggboots · 27/09/2026 08:17

It’s YOUR day. You do exactly what you’re comfortable with.

And half the fun is that people don’t know what they are doing and mess up.

SayDoWhatNow · 27/09/2026 08:34

We had a ceilidh, partly because I didn't want the awkward first dance experience. Also because I love ceilidh dancing.

It was great and having a "caller"made it easier for everyone who wanted to participate.

I did the first verse and chorus of our first dance and had primed bridesmaids, parents and others to join in. We didn’t practice at all and no one wants to watch us awkwardly sway for 3 minutes.

A friend got married and was very ill- dosed up on steroids and made it to her first dance then went to bed. The rest of us carried on the party for her. It was a fab wedding and she wanted everyone to have a good time.

"awkwardly sway for 3 minutes"
Oh dear god, yes, that's always cringeworthy!

Yetone · 27/09/2026 08:48

One of my children and their OH had a dance lesson for the first dance. This is quite common.

whiteroseredrose · 27/09/2026 09:00

We didn’t have an Evening Do, so no worries about dancing.

Good call

honeylulu · 27/09/2026 09:16

We didn't have an evening party and not wanting to dance was one big reason.

The other reasons were cost (tight budget), venue being in the countryside with no accommodation so we thought a lot of guests wouldn't hang around for long after the meal amd also our honeymoon flight was midday the following day and didn't want to be frazzled and hungover.

My husband hates dancing and almost always avoids it. I don't mind a dance but hate being the centre of attention. We both felt sick with apprehension about what to choose - a proper dance (we even had some lessons but they didn't go well), a silly comedy dance or "awkward swaying" as another poster put it. One day I said "we could just not have an evening do" and it was like a light bulb going on. No regrets!

Sounds like a good solution. A couple of the best weddings I've ever been to had no evening do.

All the guests burst into flames

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 27/09/2026 09:32

We both had dc..
We all did the hokey cokey!
Divorced less than 3 years later so maybe not a good idea!(?)

AvengingAngle · 27/09/2026 09:36

I can't dance - we didn't have any dancing at my wedding.

Your options are

  1. No dancing (or no formal dancing)
  2. Rehearse a specific dance with your fiance until you can perform it passably - you could even have dancing lessons if your budget runs to it, or perhaps you have a friend who knows about dancing and could help.
  3. Say 'fuck it' and just do the dance, however ineptly. It's your wedding, the important thing is that you enjoy it, not that you get talent-spotted for 'Strictly'.
Tryagain26 · 27/09/2026 09:38

You don't have to have a dance after the wedding if you don't want to. It's your wedding. If you don't want dancing don't have it. After the wedding breakfast do something you want. You shouldn't be bullied into doing something you don't want to just because it seems to be the norm these days.

Tigercrane · 27/09/2026 07:41

Why don't you get a few dance lessons, in some countries it very normal for people to do this still.Anyway you could just look it up on the Internet, and practice a few moves together it might be fun.

Or just not have a first dance it isn't compulsory. Why make yourself more stressed if you don't have to.
