This makes me irrationally angry

That is annoying. I favour ‘snap’, from my childhood in Derbyshire.
My biggest bugbear in this area though is people missing out the ‘to’ and saying things like ‘I need to go Tesco.’

I feel like that’s quite a recent thing.

Yes, I agree. Irritatingly widespread now though.

Bizarre as it sounds, I would be happier with ‘I need to go Tescoing’. That would make more sense to me.

Bait box is worse. I’m in the north east and loads of people call it that. Horrible term

Weeellokthen · 26/09/2026 19:20

Never heard of pack up (Scotland) packed lunch or piece here

MyLimeGuide · 26/09/2026 19:25

Its definitely meant to be a "packed" lunch, like if you have "packed" your toothbrush or "packed" your suitcase for a weekend away, you have "PACKED" your lunch for a trip out or to eat at school.

I also hate the word ‘meal’ for some reason. ‘Eating my meal’ just makes me shudder for some reaaon 🤷‍♀️
’Going out for a meal’ auuuugh!

Me too! Glad to know I’m not alone in this.

It’s just begging for some disgusting misunderstandings, isn’t it?

Pack lunch v packed lunch is a minor issue compared to a PP on this thread whose response included “them days”, surely!! 🤣

Greenandyellowday · 26/09/2026 19:36

tiredtiredd · 26/09/2026 11:31

Not really

Agree! Pack is a verb, pack lunch is an instruction, or (as a pp said) a group lunchtime get-together for a bunch of Brownies. The correct expression is packed lunch.

LesLavandes · 26/09/2026 19:51

Who cares

ImaSpringChicken · 26/09/2026 19:53

I will see your 'pack' lunch amd raise you a 'mash potato'.

!

Norwaygirl · 26/09/2026 19:59

Up in Yorkshire I say pack up too.

That was me 😂
Them days....you know when it was all fields around here.
AKA "back in my day".

Yes I know tea is regional. Pack lunch isn’t

In the regions it’s used, it is!

sashh · 27/09/2026 05:25

Depending on what mood I'm in it can be a packed lunch, a pack up, bait or snap.

Poppinpoppinpopcorn · 27/09/2026 08:34

Buynow · 26/09/2026 17:42

My theory is that those who say "pack lunch" have at some time in the past misheard someone calling it packed lunch.
I say packed lunch or pack up. My dad used to say snap , which I quite like but it's not a local description.

My current petrol hate is my dance teacher who announces that she's going to "learn" us a new dance every week.

Well your theory is completely wrong

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 27/09/2026 08:40

Needmorelego · 26/09/2026 11:08

No.
It's regional.
Not everyone in the UK speaks the same version of English.

It may be "regional" but it's still incorrect, the same as needs fed or needs changed when it should be needs to be fed or needs to be changed.

TheCabbageMerchant · 27/09/2026 08:41

LesLavandes · 26/09/2026 19:51

Who cares

Honestly - that was what I was thinking. There’s plenty more in important things in life to get irritated and angry about. Other people’s use of language is pretty low on the list of priorities.

5128gap · 27/09/2026 08:47

As long as they don't say they're taking their pack lunch because they need to loose weight, I'm fine.

It's not incorrect for that region. My grandparents always said pack lunch, they where born in the 1910s. Something that has been said this way for so long is not incorrect.

Yes! When we were in school (Wales) we had to say whether we were on dinners (‘cínio’) or sandwiches (‘brechdanau’) when the teacher took the register in the morning!

OMG I have just remembered that we did this too!

TheGardenPond · 27/09/2026 09:21

I think my elderly relatives from NW used to say bait and bait box for packed lunch/ lunch box. I thought it was to do with taking your sandwiches with you in your bait box when going for a day fishing. But no one was going fishing and our packed lunches were just for work or school.

I think I probably say “pack’ lunch” but in my head I’m saying “packed lunch”. It’s shortened a bit in the pronunciation.

The one I hate and makes me want to rampage is “half term” as a general term for any school holiday. So Easter, Christmas and summer holidays all getting called “half term”. AARGH. I work in a woke charity sector that supports schools and I think it’s possibly coming from people not wanting to use Christian focussed names maybe?? But also I’ve noticed parents at my DC school doing it. Dreadful.

Yeah, you’re right, that works ok 😄 I quite like verbing words.
