This makes me irrationally angry

Wait until you find out some people call it ‘pack up’

Doggymummar · 26/09/2026 10:29

Yeah we used to have pack up for school dinners

Needmorelego · 26/09/2026 11:05

Regional variation.
Does it matter?

oviraptor21 · 26/09/2026 11:06

Yep. Horrible. It's a lunch that's packed.

WouldYouLikeAnyToast · 26/09/2026 11:06

I'd annoy you then as I call it pack up. 😁

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 26/09/2026 11:07

Historically correct it's a lunch in a pack.

No it’s just incorrect

It's just an abbreviation I guess.

Technically it's got to be "packed" as in you pack a lunch at home and take it out.

Yeah it is annoying but it's just how people speak these days.

italianlondongirl · 26/09/2026 11:07

Yes I’ve seen this

It slightly grates on the nerves in the same way that math instead of maths does

The correct term is “packed” as it is a lunch which has been packed in the past I thought, as opposed to being carried in a pack on your back?

backformoreofthesame · 26/09/2026 11:07

I use packed lunch and pack up interchangeable

but not pack lunch which sounds like a lunch for a bunch of girl guides

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 26/09/2026 11:08

I hate ‘pack up’

tiredtiredd · 26/09/2026 11:08

Pack up doesn’t bother me as much as it’s another term for it. Pack lunch just sounds like it’s being said wrong.

No.
It's regional.
Not everyone in the UK speaks the same version of English.

NormasArse · 26/09/2026 11:09

You have too much time on your hands 😁.

Needmorelego · 26/09/2026 11:10

@tiredtiredd some people call it "snap".
Do you need a lie down if you ever hear that?

So must you to be commenting that I have too much time on my hands.

Pearlstillsinging · 26/09/2026 11:13

It's not regional. People seem to have stopped using 'ed' at the end of past participles recently.
I frequently see 'I use to .....' , 'He is bias' and other examples.

I’ve never heard of that but it doesn’t bother me tbh. A different term for it and not incorrectly said.

'Pack up' was a Yorkshire variation - and probably other places - which I remember even as a child. So from ancient times.

'Pack lunch' has coincided with smartphone use, along with 'worse' when they really mean 'worst'.
And on it goes...

Me too. Along with "hence why", "less" when they mean "fewer", "expresso" and the utter piss-boiling "I'm afraid to say" (You're SORRY to say! If you were afraid to say you wouldn't fucking say it!)

Oh god expresso is a bad one.

See also “I text you” instead of “I texted you”

I've never heard this expression before, but to my mind it sounds much better than...•refuses to utter write the words*.

It's always 'packed lunch' for me.

Shego · 26/09/2026 11:23

I can't say it bothers me, but I've put YANBU as I also get irrationally wound up over other words said wrong.

'Pacific' when they mean 'specific' and 'aksed' instead of 'asked' drive me particularly mad.
