To think winning £110M overnight would solve a lot of problems but bring a whole set of new ones?

Someone in the UK won £110M last night and I was just thinking about how they’re feeling this morning.

All your money worries are gone, you can buy a nice house, quit your job etc.

But I wonder if those problems are replaced with new ones. Some people in your life might be jealous. Or expect handouts and get angry about who gets what.

And then your DC. Do you tell them they still need to do their homework? That they’ll still need to have a job/career one day?

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be great, I'm just wondering if it swaps one set of problems for another.

It depends on what you spend it on doesn't it. For example I generally travel a couple of months a year. Nobody would bat an eyelid if I increased it to 3 months and they wouldn't even know what I was spending abroad

I've no need for a large house or a sports car/ yacht etc

Nor am I interested in designer clothes.

So I'm really struggling to think how people would know

Well sure @Timeforachange26 if you don’t spend it people won’t know, but obviously most people do want to spend their money and wouldn’t really keep the same lifestyle if they had £110m in the bank!

Giving up work would be hard to explain. Maybe lie and say your new job that’s only WFH.

The rest can be explained by lies people have posted here - an inheritance, a pension payout, smart early investments. You can say you’re visiting friends or family to explain the travel, or just say you’re travelling somewhere cheaper than where you’re actually going to.

But we are talking about 100m, I could “hide” 10million or so and palm it off as inheritance but not 100m because my family and friends actually know each other 😆

Why bother playing the Euromillions if you don’t want to spend much?!

Bjt I would have the same lifestyle. I like my life, why would I change it

This is why I have a small circle of friends - and I woul dbe suspicious of any new ones!

As for relatives - only 2 I know that would possibly be dicks. The rest are all set up well so wouldnt even need whatever help I could give.

I would feel very stressed though trying to set up a social housing initiative...

I think I’d set up a charitable foundation if I win this sort of money. I’d pay myself an annual salary and give the profits from the capital to charity. I’m really keen on educational opportunities for children, so I’d focus on that.

I don't play. I do the the normal lottery though ( once in a blue moon) . But " stuff" doesn't interest me

And they can all see into your bank accounts and investment portfolio can they?

I would be giving up work, same for DH. Buying a 5m plus house, I want a housekeeper, cook & a weekend driver. Flying first class & seeing the world, might have to send the dc to boarding school to facilitate that! 😆

Have you heard of these crazy concepts called saving and investing? They’re not that new. Or being philanthropic?

Well my parents know about my investments as they started some of them and I discuss what funds I use with friends & family. Either way my lifestyle will change if I win 100m and an investment coming good won’t explain that!

I agree OP, just what would you do with all that money?
Yes, I would share with family to allow them to buy homes etc but ultimately, it will only be extra 0000s and a different set of problems.
And as good as it would be to indulge in whatever you want, the problems in my life that keeps me awake wouldn't be solved by any amount of money.

I know I doubt I’d be worried about anything to be honest

Bought and renovated my rented house. `Took my two sons and grandkids for a 5 star foreign holiday. Paid off student loans, bought a car, deposit for a house for one son. Conservatory, new windows, doors and boiler for the other. Invested 250K in a pension fund for my old age..had been self employed so had none. Bought a fancy handbag and pen . Bought a fabulous bright yellow wee 2 seater Smart Car. All things that brought joy and comfort to our lives without being luxurious. BIggest benefit was not seeing a brown envelope coming through the door and worrying that it was a big bill x

There is a famous Chinese proverb which translates to "wealth does not last past three generations." It's true. The children of this person cannot afford to be complacent or their own children will be the ones that squander the money as they do not recognise its value.
