AIBU to be annoyed about neighbours having 8 cars?

Hi, the people across the road from me have 8 vehicles and apart from the one on their driveway, they park all of them on the street. Some don't move for months and months.

I know I don't own the street and so have no right to park there, but it's pissing me off as I often can't park anywhere near my home (I don't have a driveway). First world problems, I know, but it seems so selfish!

AIBU to leave a note on their cars? Is there any point? Is there anything I can realistically do about it? Are there any laws covering this?

Are they running a car business from the house?
you can check online if they are taxed and insured, but if they are then I think albeit inconsiderate, then it is legal. Unless you live in a development with covenants, I don’t think there is much you can do.
If they are inconsiderate enough to take up all the available parking spaces then I very much doubt that a note will do anything at all, except to potentially aggravate the situation.

You are not being unreasonable but they obviously know they are not popular so there is no point writing a note.
Just make sure that they are all taxed and insured. If it is annoying other people on the street too then between you, with a majority vote, you can maybe set up a residents parking zone.

I would say you live on my old road but no houses had a drive so you don’t! My neighbours with 8 cats drove me mad with their entitlement. Especially when they had a family funeral and basically wanted to close the road?!

After we left permit parking was introduced and l would love to be a fly on the wall, as my understanding the maximum number of cars allowed were 4

You could report those that never move as abandoned vehicles on the public highway.

All the cars are taxed and insured. The neighbours just seem to like having a lot of cars, they're not selling them or running a business involving them. I know other neighbours think it's bad of them but it seems there's nothing we can do about it.

I guess you're right - if they were reasonable people they'd know they are being selfish so they wouldn't do it, so maybe they wouldn't respond to a note.

In fairness, if they own eight vehicles, where else are they going to put them? One on the drive and th rest on the road.

Surely it would be even ruder to park their many cars on a street they don't even live on?

Goodness only knows why they have so many (multi occupancy house?) but they can't exactly deflate them and pop them in a box.

I appreciate that it's frustrating, but other than actually selling off their cars, I'm not sure what they can do to be less in the way.

A pp mentioned residential parking permits. I don't know anything about how they work but if you could approach the Council (local councillors?) with the issue, they might discuss introducing it and allow a max of x permits per household ( not 8!) or something like that.

There are 3 people in the house, so they've got multiple cars each. They just seem to like having a lot of cars! They could park all of them on the grass verge outside their home, but they only park 2 there, one on the driveway and the rest on the street. We have one car and often have to park on other roads nearby, which is very annoying at times!

There's a car parked near us that has been there so long it has weeds growing up under and around it. The owners live across the road from it but it's not on the actual road (in a kind of layby) so not illegal but I do wish they'd scrap it. It hasn't moved in years and is an old wreck.

You could think about asking your council's planning enforcement team to investigate the number of cars. There's no set limit in planning (or in law afaik) but the enforcement team would need to consider whether they think the excessive amount is incidental to the enjoyment of the dwelling or if it goes beyond that they could speak to the owners/potentially take action. This could give you some supporting information to approach the highway department about parking permits for the road.

You'll get people saying you don't own the road so they can have as many cars as they like, but it is really selfish. All my neighbours have multiple cars and I don't know why because none of them are in use all the time. They just clog up the street and make visibility difficult.

This is annoying me as well at the moment. Guy across the road from us runs some sort of car mechanic business, and uses the road as his work shop. Parking is limited, and people often park across my driveway

I wonder if you live in my street as I’m faced with the same issue plus they have a big van. What annoys me most is they don’t seem to work, so if you’re lucky enough to find a space and go out they move a car off their drive and take the spot. Nothing can be done though.

one neighbour has 5 vehicles and a big enough driveway but park on the road so they can shunt vehicles around. It’s just an elderly couple and I think only 1 of them drives now.

other neighbour has at least 6 vehicles. Some don’t move for months. Their pickup has been in the same spot for 7 months now.

we have a blue badge so tend to end up on yellow lines till someone moves as it’s not safe for us to park on another road. Planning to get a double driveway in the new year. That take away at least 2 of their parking spots id suspect.
