Husband has never heard of HRT. I find it odd...

So I'm a woman of that kind of age and I've got a gynaecologist appointment next week and the doctor has brought up HRT before.

When I was talking to my husband over the weekend he had never heard of it 🙄Is his head really in the sand? I'm not expecting him to be fully read up on it but honestly his reaction was a bit like I'd just told him I was thinking of putting after sun on my sunburn 😅

He really had no idea and I'm not sure he gets hormonal changes when women go through the menopause. It's not that he is dim either, university educated, software engineer.

Not really an AIBU but isn't it strange he knows nothing about it?

I would be surprised if none of them don’t talk about it - just not with you

Maybe 🤔
Does it matter.
I am friends with my friends because we have interests in common so we talk about those things.

It doesn’t matter at ALL but explains why you were “confused” by us saying that HRT has been in the papers - a LOT

Oh give it up.
I know HRT exists.
I know other medications exist.
I just don't go around seeking out a billion articles in the media about them because they are not relevant to me personally.

You were confused
and now you’re not
as you acknowledge that you simply haven’t clocked them because of zero interest to you
got it
all good

DangerousLesions · 27/09/2026 16:17

You could tell him that HRT makes a woman as horny as hell and see how interested he is then?

localnotail · 27/09/2026 16:33

Some men have very little idea about female health - its just not that interesting for them. I've heard some real gems over the years - one guy thought female breasts get bigger with arousal (like literally grow bigger, like a penis would). Another thought periods is only one day and you lose just a tiny bit of blood.

He may heave heard something but it passed him by, as its not important. Up to you how you deal with it.

Female breasts do get bigger with arousal.

They do get bigger with arousal, how do you not know this?

At school, we had a lesson about periods, the information was that despite the appearance of your period, you actually (unless you have other medical issues) dont lose very much blood. Im not sure on that one

Lots of my periods only last a day

So these are not gems.

No they dont. Nipples get tighter making whole boob appear more pert looking/ attractive. They dont actually grow up a size, this is bullshit.

Well I must be a freak then. My boobs dont grow when I'm aroused and my periods lasted almost a week where I soaked through pads and clothing several times a day.

He doesn’t remember his mum going through menopause?

I’m a bit surprised it hasnt come up in conversation before now if you have got as far as making an appointment. He must have noticed your symptoms ?

I don't remember my mum going through the menopause and dm did share stories on that sort of thing. I have no idea if she took HRT or had hot flushes, found it hard, or found it easy. I'd suspect she probably went through menopause just after I left home which probably accounts for some of it. I might ask her.

It's not the sort of thing women talked about 30 years ago.

I think dh would know it existed, but not have had enough interest to know more. If I wanted to talk to him about it then he'd show some interest in a "are you okay" sort of way.

localnotail · 27/09/2026 17:58

No wonder man are repeating this bullshit if this is what you were taught at school. I wondered where this was coming from.

Were you also taught that if a woman on a period stands next to milk it goes sour?

This happens to lots of women and conversely there are lots of women it doesnt happen to. But it isnt a gem, to use one example and criticise that as a lack of knowlege when if a man said to me that he knew that women always have period of a week and lose lots and lots of blood, that doesnt happen to me. So I could say 'this was a right gem he came out with'.

Is that aimed at me? No of course that wasnt taught. We had a mixed lesson, with an outside agency on periods come in (cannot remember now who they were, but all women).

At the time my friends and I said that cant be right about the blood loss. And I repeated it above. Im just explaining to you what was taught in my school by 'experts'.

I didn't say they went up a cup size but they definitely increase in size due to increased blood supply. I promise you, it's a thing. Have you not noticed this with your own breasts?

I dont think anyone said they go up a size, why are you making things up?

They do get bigger, its just blood flow swelling things up, like the lips on your face as well.

Why so hostile? Its ok to get things wrong although Im surprised women dont kmow this about themselves.

BogRollBOGOF · 27/09/2026 19:08

I've heard of Viagra and I can safely say that I'll never need it for impotence. I'd be surprised if there's many women that hadn't heard of it. There's a lot of medications that I don't need to use, won't need to use or hopefully won't need to use that I am aware of, either as categories of medication types (e.g. anti-coagulants) or specific types (e.g. Warfarin)

Not knowing specific brands of HRT and their application is understandable, but it is odd not to know of a widely discussed category of medication that's had a raised profile in the last 5 years or so. It's like not knowing about hormonal contraceptives.

I knew DM was on HRT about 30 years ago. She still had to buy sanitary protection around the time I needed to start using it. Unfortunately for her osteo-arthritis she ended up coming off it due to the health concerns that have now been debunked. I'm grateful to be entering middle-age in an era when (peri) menopause is being better understood and treated more effectively for better holistic health.

JLou08 · 27/09/2026 20:08

I hadn't heard of it until a few years ago when I was in my mid 30s, I'm guessing it's been around longer than that? So if I as a woman in her 30s didn't know it's not surprising that a man wouldn't. Why would they until their wife needs it?

It is
but as you have acknowledged - you don’t clock it or read it because not of any interest to you

Did you misunderstand my comments and took them as me claminig there was no coverage at all?

The coverage of HRT is not as big and wide as some here seem to allude to.

It is. However, as you acknowledge, you don’t clock them as you aren’t interested / irrelevant to you

I didn't acknowledge anything like that....

Anyway I am not sure why I was brought back in so I will bounce back out in my apparent manliness

But hey… got to go to work so I’ll leave you to it.

I bet you start becoming so much more aware of the coverage from now on! 😆

I dont think its surprising at all and many many women dont use it or need it.

My mum knows nothing of HRT because she didnt use it.

Have you not had chats with your girlfriends over the years about menopause and HRT quite a bit?

I meet up with old school friends two or three times a year. We're all 46-48 but we've never discussed menopause or HRT at all. And it's not that we wouldn't discuss health problems particularly, a friend had PCOS and had to have various gynecological investigations as have I. But menopause has never been raised.

2-3x a year? So not that close

I see my close girlfriends much more regularly and absolutely discussed
