Husband has never heard of HRT. I find it odd...

So I'm a woman of that kind of age and I've got a gynaecologist appointment next week and the doctor has brought up HRT before.

When I was talking to my husband over the weekend he had never heard of it 🙄Is his head really in the sand? I'm not expecting him to be fully read up on it but honestly his reaction was a bit like I'd just told him I was thinking of putting after sun on my sunburn 😅

He really had no idea and I'm not sure he gets hormonal changes when women go through the menopause. It's not that he is dim either, university educated, software engineer.

Not really an AIBU but isn't it strange he knows nothing about it?

When I was at school I didn't take biology after third year (year 9 these days) as I took chemistry and physics and it didn't fit into the right option blocks. I certainly didn't hear about HRT back then.

Although it had been invented, I don't think it was as widely available in 1973 as it is now, or as widely talked about either.

So you aren’t surprised about a 38 year old woman on Mumsnet who heard about HRT for the first time ever a couple of days ago?

NotABlessedFruit · 27/09/2026 11:34

I am bit confused by people talking about HRT being heavily covered in news? I check news daily, but never really saw any super coverage. Is it sideways insome individual mags parts?

sittingonabeach · 27/09/2026 11:37

Menopause is talked regularly on the news, social media etc. HRT will be mentioned in these articles. Employers now have menopause policies which will have been discussed in the news. Menopausal women cannot be discriminated against

Well then I don’t believe you check the news daily! Unless just the sports section

My mum had a hysterectomy and afterwards my dad asked the matron on the ward what my mum had had done. He just didn't know. She had to explain what and why.

I don't think men do know this stuff. I have fully educated my 16yr old DS but how will they know if they weren't taught?

I mean I didn't know anything about it until I was in my 40s and older women mentioned it in relation to HRT. I had to read up on it. I didn't know about Oestrogen and progesterone. My mother never discussed this with me and to this day says she sailed through it.

Only when I hit my own meno, did I look back and understand that's why she started slamming doors and getting constantly furious.

Do most women know what medication is used for prostate cancer?
I would be horrified if a male had never heard of the menopause but not knowing the name of a medication they have never needed in their life I don't think is odd.

This

Deleted sorry though referring to another exchange

I think some people are missing the difference between knowing what the menopause is and knowing the name of a medication that some women take for it.

38, you are heading towards peri menopause. You may sail through if you are lucky. But chances are you may have some symptoms. HRT can be taken during peri menopause, so not that far away

I’m currently pregnant with my third, so pre-menopause isn’t something I’ve really considered yet.

Where I’m from, menopause just isn’t discussed to the same extent. I didn’t even realise my mum had gone through it until much later, because she never mentioned it. It was basically treated as a normal part of life — something women went through and just got on with. It’s entirely possible that people I knew received treatment, but it simply wasn’t something we talked about.

So if you think not knowing about it comes down to being isolated or uninformed, maybe — but I still think it’s better to explain it than get offended that someone hasn’t heard of a particular medical treatment. Nobody can know about every single treatment or condition in medicine.

so you are not from the uk?

you don’t read newspapers / magazines or watch Tv?

and you are very new to Mumsnet?

If you have never heard of HRT then you could not have read anything at all about the menopause?

You may believe whatever you eant to, but simply. The coverage of HRT is not as big and wide as some here seem to allude to.

You can still get pregnant during peri menopause. And indeed many women get the urge to have another child in late 30s/early 40s due to hormones wanting a last hurrah. Many women also have babies thinking it was the menopause that stopped their periods

Well sure - that might explain why you seem to read the news daily but have skirted over the very very frequent coverage of HRT

Why do you assume everyone reads the news every day? Some of us simply aren’t that interested in keeping up with every bit of news, and that’s okay. I know I’m not.

I catch up on the bigger stories, but I don’t read newspapers or magazines, and I don’t check news notifications when they pop up on my phone. My life just doesn’t revolve around following the latest news.

Some of us live quite happily without making current events part of our daily routine. That doesn’t mean we’re isolated or living under a rock — we just have different priorities.

Needmorelego · 27/09/2026 12:06

I too am baffled by the supposed "very very frequent" news reports about HRT.
Maybe I've been watching/reading the wrong news all these years.

Even so, I don’t have any symptoms, my periods are regular, and I’m fertile. Why would I start researching treatments for something that doesn’t seem relevant to me yet?

HundredMilesAnHour · 27/09/2026 12:10

Some men (and indeed women) have no clue if it’s not something they’ve been exposed to by family / friends etc.

I reconnected with an old boyfriend this year (we were together at uni so a long time ago!) and we’re now ‘back together’ in our mid-50s. He was going to his sister-in-law’s 50th birthday party and I made a joke about “have you got her some HRT as a present?” He had no idea what I meant. 😳 So I translated it into his native language (he’s Scandinavian) and left him to Google.

Since then when we’ve been together he’s had to learn about Oestrogel and vaginal Utrogestan (whether he likes it or not!) so he’s getting there but I was initially a bit shocked by his lack of awareness. He also asked me if we needed to use contraception as he didn’t want an unplanned pregnancy and I was very “I’m 56, wtf do you think?!”.

It’s more that in one of your posts you were pretty much saying you’ve got years to go before you need to think about it. It’s not like symptoms only start in your 50s. Can be a shock to your system if you start feeling crap in your 40s if you are not expecting that

What news have you been reading?

How far back do you want me to go?
Circa 1986 when I was just entering womanhood it was Today newspaper (remember that one...it was in colour), our 2 local papers and I watched Central News on ITV.
I used to work in a newsagents so at one point I probably read all the different news papers and magazines available.
Yes I probably have read articles about HRT but I don't have a photographic memory so can't remember every article out there 😂
