AIBU to find pet-friendly cottages impractical if dogs cannot use furniture?

I’ve been looking at ‘pet friendly’ holiday cottages in the UK to take our dog and pretty much all of them say dogs are not allowed on furniture or in bedrooms.

I don’t think I know anyone who’s dogs don’t jump on the sofa so how are you supposed to mange this - take loads of covers or just stay at home?

@CaptBirdsEar

they do because they don’t clean them twice a day as vast majority of humans do.

As you wish.

But I don’t want to I stop my dog joining me on the sofa. In fact I trained him to join me there. He doesn’t join visitors when they sit there, only me. Why can’t you understand that other people are not the same as you?

That's absolutely 100% fine for you at home but the post is about a holiday cottage that's asking that your dogs don't jump on their furniture which is also perfectly reasonable.
You either need to train your dogs or not take them.

Same as coffee shops, public transport etc. people need to train their dogs before they take them out. How they do that is up to them - some don't allow dogs on furniture full stop but others train their dogs to respond to cues eg 'up' if you want them to jump onto something & also 'no' to stop them doing something.

If you can't stop your dog jumping over furniture (or anything else) when you need to then it's not well trained.

I think people have lost the concept of training a dog.

I don’t understand why people get so wound up about dogs on furniture. A couple of decent throws that get taken off and washed every week or so, it’s not difficult. My big bags of elbows are welcome on the sofa for a cuddle, I don’t see the point of having a dog if you don’t do this.

I genuinely don’t get the uproar about dogs on furniture when pretty much every holiday rental will have manky sex stains and sweaty body juice all over the place - do you ever really think this through?

Stop behaving like a petulant child.
Train your dog to not sit on furniture or sit on the floor with them.

Our dogs were never allowed on the furniture. They are dogs not people.

Omg. My dog was never allowed on furniture. I think that is gross. I’d hate to stay somewhere where animals have sat on the sofa etc.

Especially if you have allergies

We went to one that said no dogs on furniture or upstairs.
There was no stair gate up.
In the daytime it’s pretty easy to enforce, but at night what do you do?
If the dog isn’t allowed upstairs it will make its way onto the sofa regardless?
if there’s no gate it will make its way upstairs at night too.
My Spaniel does prefer to sleep in his crate but we did wonder what you’re supposed to do if they don’t?

Not if it's properly trained. Our dog has never tried to get on a sofa anywhere other than home, nor have any of our previous dogs. If the sofa she is allowed on at home doesn't have a throw on it, she will sit by the sofa and look at you until a throw is put on it.

It's really not difficult to train a dog.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/09/2026 18:54

It's more difficult to find a no dogs place to stay. (Allergies, asthma)

Part of having dogs is being responsible and putting up with the restrictions that they can bring. Just as having children means you can't go in certain pubs, or do things you used to. Or having illnesses and conditions.

Life is full of restrictions and choices that lead to restrictions.

They'd probably have to charge more for cleaning and extra wear and tear.

Not sure how I’m behaving like a petulant child?

Would you actually say that to someone IRL if they said what I wrote - I doubt it 🤨

Wouldn’t bother me. My dogs have never been allowed on the furniture. Cats are, but they aren’t coming on holiday.

Would never dream of not letting our dog on furniture, bizarre.

Not being funny but how would any cottage owner know?

Why bother having a dog at all? Jeeze.

Yet dozens of people will have shagged in it before you and that doesn’t bother you? 😂

This bothers me more than dogs tbh!!!

I'd rather have a bed that has had dogs sleep on it than men ejaculating all over it 🤮🤮🤮

Even sweat - the summers we have had. Sweat must have straight through the topsheet to the mattress. It is all so so grim all things considered. Dogs dont even sweat!

I just try not to think about it when I'm away ....

It seems to me there are a lot of people who really know nothing about dogs 😁

Neuronimo · 16/09/2026 21:14

YABVU not many people would want to have a holiday where dogs have stunk the furniture and beds out. Are dog owners nose blind most smell terrible? I can't believe how may dogs are sitting up and drooling at tables in cafes and restaurants either, it's rank.

I am frequently in cafés... bloody love spending too much money in coffee shops, finding new coffee shops, visiting and revisiting favourite coffee shops. I spend more time in coffee shops than is reasonable!

I rarely see dogs drooling on the tables. Snoozing under them yes, but not sitting up at them. I have never seen it tbh, maybe I've been lucky

Mumofyellows · 16/09/2026 22:29

I can’t imagine not sitting watching television with my dogs cuddling me in the evenings, it’s part of the joy of having them. They absolutely love it and so do I.

How exactly are you meant to keep dogs off the sofas when you’re asleep in the bedrooms at night (where they’re also not allowed to go)? With the best will in the world, I’m not sure there’s much you can do without constant supervision, so using throws brought from home is probably the next best option 🤷‍♀️

Shut the door to the room with the sofas in?

The trouble is there are loads of open plan, single level properties that claim to be dog friendly but are totally impractical for this - that’s my whole point.

We had a much loved dog when I was a child, he was no angel believe me but we still managed to train him to never go upstairs and never jump on the furniture and funnily enough, it was possible to do this and still love and adore the dog and make a huge fuss of him and give him a fabulous life.

We took him to various dog friendly holiday lets and had no problem not allowing him on beds or furniture because he had been trained that he was not allowed on beds or furniture and had his own (very comfy) bed to sleep in instead. So he didn't try because he knew he wasn't allowed.

We don't have a dog now but other family members do, again she is loved and adored and has been trained not to jump on furniture and not to go upstairs. Again, she can easily be taken to holiday lets and she doesn't misbehave because she understands what she is and isn't allowed to do. She's a gorgeous, beloved, contented but essentially well trained family dog. It really isn't rocket science.

I don't understand people who seem to think that you can only love a dog if it's sprawled out on the sofa or in bed beside you. The suggestion from some posters that you can't be a proper dog owner unless you treat your dog as a human being. It's ridiculous.

Fair enough if you're happy to allow it in your own house but if you can't trust your dog in a holiday let then you can't book a holiday let, end of.
