AIBU to find pet-friendly cottages impractical if dogs cannot use furniture?

I’ve been looking at ‘pet friendly’ holiday cottages in the UK to take our dog and pretty much all of them say dogs are not allowed on furniture or in bedrooms.

I don’t think I know anyone who’s dogs don’t jump on the sofa so how are you supposed to mange this - take loads of covers or just stay at home?

Crate them at night

If holiday accommodation wants the dogs to be crated, they'll have to provide a crate. We certainly wouldn't have room in the car for a dog crate as well as our family, the dog and our luggage.

If they changed the bedding and vacuumed, there shouldn't be any dog hairs on it (or certainly not enough for them to be 'covered'). I'd be more concerned that you were given dirty bedding, to be honest!

It was clean. Smelled of fabric softener or detergent. The problem was that it was a soft, brushed cotton and the hairs were almost "woven" into it. It looked, to me, as if a dog had been sleeping in the bed on a previous occasion, the bedding had been washed and dried but loads of hairs remained. It was white bedding and white hairs.

The Airbnb I stayed at in the summer provided a huge dog crate.

Do people really have dogs in the bed, under the covers? 😮

This is another interesting view - I might be stupid but I always do a basic clean and Hoover in a holiday house - I know it will be professionally cleaned but I just thought that’s what everyone did.

I wouldn’t take a hoover but use what’s there.

Edited

I wouldn't leave a mess but I feel if you are paying £££ for a holiday rental you shouldn't need to do housework. Cleaners fees are included in the rental cost.

I’m sorry but this is bonkers. You buy new duvets and pillows every month? You get your carpets professionally cleaned fortnightly? What a waste of money and stuff.

This whole thread has some bizarre stuff on it honestly!

I do, and I know it does sound a bit bonkers but…4 dogs. They’re my world. I’m not shutting them out or keeping them off furniture. However, they do make things smell. The smell bothers me so this is the solution, and it works for us.

They only sleep in 1 bedroom (mine) and I buy cheap duvets and pillows for this reason. They don’t go in the other bedrooms.

Cheap clean throws are your friend.

We have stayed in accommodation that was attached to the owner's property.
We had to clean thoroughly on the morning of departure, and stay put whilst the owners did an inspection afterwards.
That was the first and last time we stayed somewhere where the owners were so close.

Goodness me - that’s crazy - like some kind of school inspection!

Booking these places really is a lottery!

I think some people do, yes!

I did. We kept each other warm.

In Victorian time, whippets were used keep children warm in bed. Dogs in beds is not a new thing.

That's ridiculous. Adds stress to your holiday. It's meant to be relaxing not boarding school. It's actually quite a condescending of the owners.

SillyPiccalilli · 17/09/2026 23:18

I'm on the take blankets for the sofas, and hoover before you leave crew!

Why have a dog if he's gonna be confined to a life of obediently sitting in his crate? Sofa snuggles are where it's at ☺️

I think some people do, yes!

Mine is not a breed that is bred for burrowing into holes so mine doesnt go under the covers, (on any surfance - she hates being UNDER a cover)

but for example Dachshunds are very likely to go under the covers and get under blankets since they were literally bred for burrowing.

I think choosing a breed whose breed instincts one is comfortable with is very important.

Noodge · 18/09/2026 08:41

My dog wouldn't get under the covers (mutt of large working dog breeds) but she does get on my bed, not every night as I use an electric blanket and she gets too warm!

I only buy cheap bedding (apart from for the guest/spare rooms) and I'm single. I actually love sleeping with her. She's a protective dog and having her next to me feels safe. Plus I love her. She moults like crazy though so I do change the sheets often!

Goldengirl123 · 18/09/2026 08:46

Dogs do not need furniture!

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/09/2026 08:59

I take lots of throws. Always been fine. There’s no way my dogs aren’t getting on the sofas.

I noted upthread that I actually asked outright about a secure garden and was told yes. Turned out it was shared, so I wasnt' comfortable letting the dog out for pees there anyway.

😡Just be clear on the listing!

We nearly booked somewhere advertised as dog friendly with an enclosed garden. Luckily i read the reviews as it turned out the enclosed garden was on the other side of the street! I mean, you'd surely want that information to be clear even if you didn't have dogs.

Yes there's needs to be a much better and clearer system.

Neither do people.

RedPony1 · 18/09/2026 13:19

i don't see the point in having a dog if i can't snuggle with them on the sofa every eve!
I'd just take throws, I'm not going on holiday and making my dog sit on the floor every eve, that's not enjoyable.

Mcdhotchoc · 18/09/2026 13:46

What it means in practice is that if you leave the place covered in dog hair they will charge you.
We have a low malt dog and take throws for sofa and bed. Never had an issue.

RampantIvy · 18/09/2026 13:49

I'm coming round to thinking that people need to take throws and dog beds with them to dog friendly places. I draw the line at having them in any bed other than the dog owner's bed at home.

Having one in bed with you in a holiday rental really is a step too far.

Only if we can also agree that have sex in a bed that is not your own is also a step too far.

The bodily fluids, the sweat.... it is gross. Mattresses are not washed in between guests and most bedding (in the places i stay in anyway) does not have a waterproof coating. I find it really disgusting but I get on with it and accept that having had humans in a place will mean this.

If people are allowed to have sex in the beds that I sleep in at a holiday rental, then I am allowing my dog up (provided no up fromt rules about it not being allowed) .

Dont want it? Then don't be a pet friendly lodge.

stillawip · 18/09/2026 14:15

We have always had dogs and they have never been allowed upstairs or on the furniture downstairs. Each season when our Labradors shed their coats you could literally stuff a cushion with the hair that comes off them... I have no wish to either sit or sleep on that! Never mind where their feet/nose/rest of them have been during the day 🤢
