Terrible line- genuinely wondering whether he was supposed to say the exact opposite (social security can’t come at the expense of national security) which everyone could have supported, even recipients of social security.

Ireland is neutral, not a member of NATO and has a very small defence forces. They don’t have (eg) fighter jets so if things went wrong they’d be looking to the UK to help.

As I said, we could spend every penny we have and we would still be no match for China or an increasing unstable US if they chose to invade us. The fact is we could never defend ourselves against the might of their military.
