To think that Burnham’s words are going to haunt his premiership?

‘…national security can’t come at the expense of social security…’

If one individual is so stinking rich that the lack of their tax would ruin UK economy, then there is something very, very wrong. Nobody needs to be that rich. I’d have some sympathy for this notion of entrepreneurial aptitude if the trickle down theory was true but it clearly isn’t

If someone has generated wealth through their own business acumen then what business is it of yours? If a not about whether anyone ‘needs’ to be rich. They have generated wealth and it is up to them to use it to make more money, use it to live off or be philanthropic and give back. It’s absolutely none of your business.

John Healey, on resigning: ‘You agreed to spend 3.5% of GDP in 2035 through the next spending review … I am certain that a headmark date for 3% of GDP on defence in 2030 is what Britain must set. This commitment would have strong cross-party support.’

It is fair that the PM and the Chancellor are regularly asked about this. Spring is a long time to wait for an answer when Healey though it was imperative to resign over it.

Well that's huge word salad that says absolutely nothing.

Right hon lady (he means kemi)
We're not cutting welfare to fund defence.
National security depends on resilient communities ( if we want to be safe as a nation we don't want people poor and desperate, we want them capable and strong)
We on the Labour benches (he means himself and the government) aren't going to pay for defence by cutting welfare but we'll tell you how we're going to get to 3.5% later on.
Does that help?

capable and strong

Which is precisely why Labour has sown so much division since coming to power. They have vilified ordinary working people, encouraged judgement of those who worked, saved and planned ahead to reduce their future financial burden on the state, and sown resentment over how they spend their own hard-earned, already-taxed money.

It sounds like they’re at war.

The asymmetry of which would so colossal you could not reasonably call it war. It is an invasion by a brutal and deadly occupying force.

Israel has the 5th most powerful air force in the world and a vast amount of arms and military personnel. West Bank Palestinians have nothing.

Not really because he actually said in the same speech "and we will set out a plan to get to 3.5% by 2035 at the spending review."

2035 - really?
So what happens in the meantime?
That's a joke.
Just because Burham is at the helm doesn't make the situation any less dangerous

Itsbeenalongtimeincoming · 11/09/2026 00:10

Seems to me he is playing in League Two right now so no danger of his premiership being an issue.

Yes, 3.5% by 2035, because that's the NATO target % and timeline. All the parties (Greens aside) are on board with that part.

And yes, what happens in the meantime (how do we get there and at what rate) are questions that remain to be answered.

Healey resigned when Starmer would only commit to 2.68% by 2030 so I expect we'll see something more aggressive than that with him as Chancellor, but I suspect they're not committing in order to give themselves some wiggle room.

We should have been investing more far sooner tbh, and I'm glad there's at least some degree of cross-party consensus on the need, if not the how.

That bloke was born rich. It’s nothing to do with acumen. Money breeds money. I bet he only made a few charitable donations because they were tax deductible, like his Eton education.

I mostly agree and definitely with this last change. But then I think of Liz Truss and it would have been awful if her party were rallying around her to stay on because they didn't want to trigger a GE.

Ah, but Liz Truss didn't win a general election so that falls under part two of my proposal - we would see what the electorate thought first.

Yes you can see it on here, this idea anyone whose built something up is worse than others and should go, even if they employ many etc.

We can’t be a country of teachers and nurses only (reading that post below), or just people dependent on the state. It won’t work.

rather 'optimistic'

If you aren't scared at this point and don't understand what's about to happen is way beyond Burnhams control, you really don't know shit.

I genuinely can't understand the editorial priorities of the BBC right now.

What the fuck is this nonsense?

It will not age well.

A woman sits at her laptop while holding her bank card in her right hand. She looks deep in thought, with her left hand on the side of her head. She has blonde hair and is wearing a yellow jumper.

Are interest rates on their way up again?

As countries grapple with energy costs pushing up inflation, this month will see how central banks respond.

Can you give examples of this vilification please? And the encouragement of judgement of hard working people with reduced dependency on the state? Because I'm a hard working WC person with minimal state dependency and I've not seen this at all.
What I have seen is vilification of people on benefits, disabled people, parents of disabled children, anyone who isn't screaming 'stop the boats' accused of wanting women and girls to be unsafe, anyone who is left wing stereotyped as a TRA, dangerous fool.
The demonisation of Islam so that my Muslim friends are now frightened.
I've seen masked men terrorising volunteers who risk their lives to save lives. I've seen rioting and arson in working people's communities. I've seen people hit a protester with a walking stick while a party leader laughs.
I've seen a former nazi recruited into a major political party and when the Jewish woman he terrorised objected, the party leader doubling down and developing a sudden belief in 'rehabilitation'.
You're right, this is a deeply divided country and the divisions are showing themselves in more extreme ways than I've ever experienced before. But this government in their comparatively short term in office are not the ones who laid the foundations for this. Nor are they responsible for the behaviour I've listed.
If you can explain to me what you're thinking of that this government have said or done that to prove otherwise, then I'm happy to consider it.

ACynicalDad · 11/09/2026 07:23

I’m a long way from a Labour voter, but thought on some levels he was doing an ok job and might give some stability and not be too bad. But this will haunt him, and Pat McFaden’s all Labour MPs ask is who were can tax to pay more benefits. We normally get Labour governments when the economy has been doing well and they screw things up, this time we’re getting them after it’s gone bad post COVID. There is a shit show incoming.

AquamarinePearlGold · 11/09/2026 07:24

Badbadbunny · 10/09/2026 07:41

Yup, it never works - Gordon Brown and Rishi Sunak both became PM without a vote and neither lasted long. Both well and truly voted out by the public at their first general election. If AB survives to the GE, which is highly unlikely, he won’t win it.

And yet both were actually not as horrifically bad at the job as more popular “voted” for pms.

An attention seeking bloke on Twitter is saying this. Bless scientists but they love to say barmy things to make them sound important.

And they are important! I guess it’s frustrating to have an immense brain but play second fiddle to celebs. Or perhaps they can get funding if they say something scary/controversial.

And the BBC, must as I love it, loves a scary headline to make you engage. Then on about paragraph 3 they become a bit more circumspect.

We are due some rocky days with climate I do believe. But I also believe 100% that you are right we should enjoy this day.

Secondly:

Oh that's good news. They are UK waters btw, not owned by Scotland. So it really wouldn't matter ref a referendum. Scotland adds little to the English coffers, it's all one way. Barnet formula etc.

No mention of the VAT cut on energy bills? But yeah, we are vulnerable to the whims of the USA. It isn’t refugees, unions, benefit claimants or LGBT displays in public libraries that get us. It’s always the USA. 😔
