What has JK Rowling said or done that’s transphobic

Ducketta · Today 13:26

Another thread has said that they don’t want their thread to be derailed. Y HK Rowling and morals, so I’ll start one. Can anyone please tell me what JK Rowling has ever said or done that’s transphobic? Please be specific and outline how she has been offensive to trans people and not just been protective women and girls hard fought right to separate single sex spaces.

I cannot find anything whatsoever that she has done wrong. Nothing. Nada. And yet this JK Rowling = queen of transphobia myth persists. And it’s bloody tiresome.

What a stupid comment. Anyone can start a thread about anything they like. It’s a chat forum. Is that what you would say to someone asking about breastfeeding or how to make a lasagne or the best place to go hillwalking?

Those threads are started for actual discourse and not disingenuous. Maybe if you stop worrying about strangers genitals you’ll be able to discern the difference.

@FloraFaunaFires
as JK Rowling has done, accusing a woman boxer and various others of being trans, with no evidence) IS transphobia.

There is plenty of evidence the boxer is male, exactly as JKR stated.

Indeed. Since when did JKR say he was trans. Kalif is and always was a bloke. A bloke who got a gold medal for beating up women. If that isn’t chilling you I’m horrified.

JK Rowling using her fortune and noteriety to fund people through court who are trying to exclude trans people from spaces IS transphobia because she is specifically and repeatedly going after a vulnerable population.

The vulnerable population is women - you know, the female kind.
The kind that Nicola Sturgeon and her cronies incarcerated with male rapists.
The kind that the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre said had to "reframe their trauma" and accept men with transgender identities in their safe spaces.
The kind who worked as nurses and were forced to use workplace changing facilities with men in them.

Rowling believes women are worthy of respect and dignity. She has the resources to act on that belief.

I wonder how many children are going to feel violated when they are older knowing they had to suck on man's nipples as babies for no other reason than being a prop.

Grammarnut · Today 16:01

Lacksie · Today 13:37

Rowling holds gender-critical beliefs under which sex is immutable and trans women remain male, campaigns to ensure that law and institutions treat sex rather than gender identity as decisive in all contexts, and repeatedly has used language that portrays trans female identity as false, performative or male intrusion. People who define transphobia as including systematic invalidation or denigration of transgender identities therefore have substantial direct evidence for calling her transphobic.

Yes, they do, if you think biological truth and the need, because of men's violence, of women for sex segregated spaces, places, sports, refuges is wrong and therefore transphobic. Which it isn't. She is speaking the truth about sex and sex segregated spaces for women. So perhaps instead of calling JKR and GC women transphobic they can stop being a vicious, nasty group of people who make rape threats etc and acknowledge the truth and then live their lives as best they can, just like the rest of us.
What they actually want, unfortunately, is privilege as a sacred caste. Honestly, they are so boring and predictable, like a toddler refused another lolly.

There’s going to be an awful lot of suing going on. An awful lot.

The people who lost jobs cause they were said to be transphobic.
The babies who were made to suck perverts nipples.
The kids whose parents signed to have their bits chopped off.
The adults who had surgery instead of being given mental healthcare.
The sports governing bodies who gave prizes and selections in women’s sports to men.
The charities that were a front for child grooming.

Maya Forstater’s employment tribunal was just the tip of the iceberg.

And as usual, those that accuse others of being obsessed with genitals are the ones that mention them first, it's almost like Gaslighting.
Men have a penis and women have a vagina. We all know what genitals people have. Such a bizarre comment and yet so many throw it around like some kind of gotcha.

DeftGoldHedgehog · Today 16:05

I'm not transphobic. I hate anyone who uses trans as an issue or identity to target, vilify, attack or get access to women and girls or indeed men and boys for hatred, harassment, sexual or violent ends whatever their gender identity or sex.

They are the common enemy. Not old-school feminists for not wanting someone male-bodied in the next cubicle in the changing rooms or everyone and his dog piling into the women's toilets.

The problem is that enough men are fucking perverts that they cannot be trusted. Hence single-sex facilities.

What was my problem with man, you ask? I ask you, what was man's problem with me?
Germaine Greer: 'Women have very little idea of how much men hate them.'

Well, I think we have a good idea now.

Mouldemort · Today 16:10

You can find tons of examples, but all the transphobes simply say the transphobia is not transphobic, because no one wants to acknowledge their own bigotry. Many people including her have been radicalised and "I agree with JK Rowling" doesn't suggest that she isn't transphobic, simply that they are. Her latest glorious effort is to body shame and post an up-skirt a trans woman which apparently is strictly legal.

akkakk · Today 16:11

FloraFaunaFires · Today 15:45

This thread would be a whole lot simpler if most of the folk on it said that they were transphonbic themselves and so is JK Rowling.

Most of you are saying 'I don't like trans people and think trans people don't have the right to self determination not rights to access a bathroom that corresponds with their identified gender and lowers their risk of violent attack.'

That is transphobia.

Deliberately misgendering someone, or thinking you get to question others gender because they don't appear enough like a woman to you (as JK Rowling has done, accusing a woman boxer and various others of being trans, with no evidence) IS transphobia.

Being a trans-exclusionary feminist IS transphobia

JK Rowling using her fortune and noteriety to fund people through court who are trying to exclude trans people from spaces IS transphobia because she is specifically and repeatedly going after a vulnerable population.

Equating trans people to sexual predators or accusing them or sexual deviance IS transphobia.

The whole bathroom debate is madness because it is anti-feminist - it makes women less safe by creating a culture where we feel free to constantly question other people's gender and demand proof because they don't appear 'woman' enough to us - ie they don't conform to societal expectations of women. It creates danger for women who are deemed to have 'masculine' body types, facial hair such as through having PCOS etc.

Trans women do not make your bathrooms unsafe.

Dangerous men will do as they please regardless. They also now would be able to present themselves as being trans men using the women's bathroom, as now required by law, so you really haven't solved any problems this way!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

oh dear... there is always someone...

Most of you are saying 'I don't like trans people and think trans people don't have the right to self determination not rights to access a bathroom that corresponds with their identified gender and lowers their risk of violent attack.'

No-one is saying they don't like anyone specifically let alone an unidentified group of people - however they might dislike or disagree with actions / beliefs / comments / etc.

Love the way that words can be meant to mean anything you want - such a beautiful use of the English language - right to self-determination - all sorts of things you can self-determine, but you can't self-determine that you are something you can never be! So the idea that you can self determine as a different sex is of course nonsense...

Everyone has access to the bathrooms matching their sex as is normal in society. No-one has the right of access to the opposite sex's spaces...

There is no such thing as 'identified gender' gender is an external societal stereotype - you can dress as you want / call yourself any name you wish - ever use inaccurate pronouns, all you do is extend that stereotype - you can't identify to the opposite!

There are no stats backing the allegation of a risk of violent attack for 'trans women' in their own sex spaces (men's loos) - something continually requested, but never evidenced...

Deliberately misgendering someone, or thinking you get to question others gender because they don't appear enough like a woman to you (as JK Rowling has done, accusing a woman boxer and various others of being trans, with no evidence) IS transphobia.

It is not misgendering to call a man a man.
there is no such thing as being 'enough like a woman' no line over which once you pop you become a woman - you are born a man or born a woman - that is it - and to refer to people correctly by their sex is never an issue...

JK Rowling using her fortune and noteriety to fund people through court who are trying to exclude trans people from spaces IS transphobia because she is specifically and repeatedly going after a vulnerable population.

It is remarkable how she uses her fortune to help vulnerable people - we should celebrate it... as for men trying to bully their way into women's spaces - I am glad that someone is standing up against them... There is vulnerability amongst some of the 'trans' community - though rarely those in the headlines - mainly in the children / youth who are sucked in by lies and misdirection...

Equating trans people to sexual predators or accusing them or sexual deviance IS transphobia.

Some are sexual predators - pretty clear, they have demonstrated it time and time again - not all will be, but the fact that some use 'trans' as their mechanism to predate is a concern. There is a lot of sexual deviance within the 'trans' world - men, claiming to be women, but then claiming to be lesbians so that they can share their attraction to women (i.e. they are straight), is deviant. Lesbians being told that they are not lesbians if they don't have sex with men who are pretending to be women - is deviant. Not all are predators or sexually deviant, but too many are.

What tosh - the simplest and safest approach is that men stay in men's spaces and women stay in women's spaces

Trans women do not make your bathrooms unsafe.

Ahh now we might agree - I am male, so are all 'trans women' and I would agree that there is no evidence of male bathrooms being unsafe for or because of 'trans women'. Although if you meant men in women's bathrooms - then obviously that would be wrong because that is the very essence of making bathrooms unsafe - and the stats support that...

Dangerous men will do as they please regardless. They also now would be able to present themselves as being trans men using the women's bathroom, as now required by law, so you really haven't solved any problems this way!

It is pretty obvious who are men and women - so this argument doesn't run...

As for your continued assertions that this makes JKR transphobic - as above...

  • no-one can change sex,
  • so no-one can transition,
  • so no-one can be trans,
  • so no-one can be transphobic.

She isn’t trying to exclude transpeople from everywhere

she is happy for them to play in sport, to go to the loo. to dress how they like, call themselves what they like

she just isn’t gong to accept that men are women when they say so. She isn’t going to accept that being out with the norm for your sex makes you a different sex

and sex matters. Only woman can get pregnant following rape

Respect to this answer.

This poster has provided a definition of transphobia that some people will hold and then explained how JKR's actions fit it.

I can't help feeling OP's question was not genuine and she does not really want to understand why people think JKR is transphobic.

OP, for some people it will be this. Others will think it just because they have heard it repeated so many time they think it must be true, but can't really explain why.

Anyway, that is your answer.

I can't help noticing that you completely ignored Lacksie's reply which answers your question and which was amongst the early answers on page one of your thread.

BTW, I think JKR is a queen, do not think she is transphobic as I do not accept the above definition of transphobia, and campaign against gender ideology and for single sex spaces, services and sports.

But Lacksie did answer your question.

Accepting of an identity to avoid being transphobic

interesting - would you accept anyone as your doctor or solicitor provided they identify as it?

and - let’s go back to genitals - would you be accepting of a transman as a man when it came to choosing sexual partners if you have traditionally been only attracted to males ?

what does it mean to be accepting of an identity?

more specious logic...

it is the equivalent of my defining you as a 'mompfle'
and then saying that the more you deny it, the more mompfle that makes you!*

utterly meaningless, and not something that can be defined by one person or set of people to then become truth - it is or isn't truth in the abstract, independent of a small set of views...

and as above - as it is not possible for someone to transition, there can be no such actual thing as trans, and therefore it is not possible to be transphobic...

*i.e. probably more appropriately set in Alice in Wonderland than reality...

There was also something about a character that she had in a novel that was dressing as a female to lure and kill women while having weird sexual fixations. That was taken by some to be a poor representation of the trans community within the context of her overall stance and comments.

That was what was claimed, initially by someone who had not actually read the book. (Troubled Blood.) It grew from there into her writing a book entirely intended to vilify trans people.

After it came out several people looked for the transphobic stuff and failed to find it. In the review I read at that time and now dammit cannot find, the reviewer found a single paragraph in which a character is talking about the case of murder several years before that they have been asked to investigate, and reports that a male person at that time put on a woman's raincoat and I think a wig or rain hat in order not to be recognised.

Looking for the review I remembered, I found someone else (in Time magazine) quoting a different review;
"A subsequent review from The Guardian describes this character as “just one of many suspects” in the novel’s primary narrative, however; while the killer is apparently written to fetishize lingerie, he uses a stolen women’s coat and a wig solely as a disguise to aid his crimes. The review adds that, “he is not the main villain, nor is he portrayed as trans or even called a ‘transvestite’ by Rowling.”"

Give a dog a bad name and hang him. Or in this case, bitch and her. After all, murderers donning disguise as the other sex in order to get away with their crime is a detective fiction trope: I think PD James used it, for instance, and Dorothy L Sayers. Agatha Christie? I'm sure she must have, she used every trope that ever existed, and invented quite a few of them. But those women are dead so there is no real point in hounding them.

I agree with JK Rowling and I haven't been radicalised, I just don't want to share a space with a man who tells me I have to believe he is safe to be around because he's wearing a dress and calls himself Brenda. I don't believe a baby should be used as a prop to suck a man's nipples just to make him feel like a Woman, I think many children will grow up feeling violated and rightly so. I don't want to be called cis and yet am told I have to use the right pronouns or not misgender someone, and yet they can call me cis. Until my wishes are respected I'll call you as I see it. You insist on calling me cis against my wishes don't expect me to respect yours back.

I don't think it was a bonkers description at all. I think it was possibly the only coherent statement I have ever heard a trans ally make ( if she is, have not read the rest of her replies, that one post stands alone as an explanation a trans ally or GC person could provide).

I disagree with the definition but its internally coherent and if that is your definition that the examples she gave from JKR fit that definition.
