What has JK Rowling said or done that’s transphobic

Another thread has said that they don’t want their thread to be derailed. Y HK Rowling and morals, so I’ll start one. Can anyone please tell me what JK Rowling has ever said or done that’s transphobic? Please be specific and outline how she has been offensive to trans people and not just been protective women and girls hard fought right to separate single sex spaces.

I cannot find anything whatsoever that she has done wrong. Nothing. Nada. And yet this JK Rowling = queen of transphobia myth persists. And it’s bloody tiresome.

She has also objected to men "feeding" babies medically induced lactation fluids from their nipples. Fluids that are not nutritionally beneficial or a substitute for actual breast milk and something that is only done to gratify the man's... something or other.
Apparently, on the other side of the looking glass that is an unreasonable view too.

What a total bitch! You mean perverts have to get their sexual kicks elsewhere.

Think what you like about gender identity etc but I think EVERYONE can agree that men wanting babies to suck their nipples is abuse.

What really pisses me off is how praised the place gets for being "inclusive" The irony!

Whenever I hear ‘inclusive’ I work out who is being excluded by their ‘inclusion’. There’s always someone.

Rowling holds gender-critical beliefs under which sex is immutable and trans women remain male, campaigns to ensure that law and institutions treat sex rather than gender identity as decisive in all contexts, and repeatedly has used language that portrays trans female identity as false, performative or male intrusion. People who define transphobia as including systematic invalidation or denigration of transgender identities therefore have substantial direct evidence for calling her transphobic.

They do not.

They have an interpretation. That is not the same thing.

Risk what though? What are we risking? That people will think we’re nasty or something? It feels fairly hypocritical to me for me to think she’s a hero and then not stand up for her. Just checking in in the right here.

You would be risking a conflict between you and your DS‘ girlfriend. Which may very well lead to conflict between you and your DS, so you might be jeopardising that relationship as well.

Is that really worth it? (That’s obviously for you to decide…)

Well don't say she's your hero. Just smile and say nothing. It's the only way to deal with these people.

Well she denies their existence on a regular basis.

She claims it is not possible to change sex, whatever gender representation we might happen to choose.

Exactly how that translates into a denial of someone's very existence, no one has as yet has been able to give a clear explanation. Trans people very obviously do exist. And humans like all mammals are a dimorophic species and cannot change sex.

The two positions are not mutually exclusive.

pulpJarvis · Today 15:23

Yeah, don’t engage on this with the girlfriend, from experience nothing you say will be appreciated, and it seems being a feminist is no longer seen as a reasonable position to take… DSS girlfriend gives me very tight lipped smiles now when we meet…

Ducketta · Today 15:24

Lacksie · Today 14:02

Saying “I don’t believe Catholic doctrine” is comparable to saying “I don’t believe gender identity corresponds to biological sex.” But Rowling repeatedly goes considerably further than that. She has described trans women as “men performing their idea of femaleness”, called a trans woman a “cosplaying man”, described recognising some trans women as women as a “foundational falsehood”, and repeatedly framed trans-inclusive policies in terms of men gaining access to women and providing “cover to predators”. The equivalent wouldn’t therefore be simply saying “I don’t believe Catholicism is true”. It would be repeatedly characterising Catholics themselves as pretending, fraudulent or dangerous.

But trans women are performing womanhood aren’t they, because they’re women pretending to be men? Trans-inclusive policies do give cover to predatory men, if all a man has to do is to say he’s a women to get access to women in their single sex spaces.

Im sorry, I'm autistic and deal in facts. You’re claiming JKR is transphobic for stating provable facts? It seems very black and white to me. Transwomen are biological men who pretend to be women. Where am I going wrong?

I don’t think JK Rowling will lose any sleep if you don’t stick up for her in front of your son’s girlfriend 😂 If your son’s girlfriend is vehemently against JK Rowling, confronting her about it will only cause a row. It is unlikely that she will walk away feeling enlightened. Why would you want to invite that conflict with someone who might be the mother of your grandchildren one day?

With regards to her alleged transphobia, I think it originates from the TRA stance that trans women are women and so calling them male is transphobic. JK Rowling ‘misgenders’ trans people and seeks to alienate them from spaces that they feel entitled to.

There was also something about a character that she had in a novel that was dressing as a female to lure and kill women while having weird sexual fixations. That was taken by some to be a poor representation of the trans community within the context of her overall stance and comments.

Obviously the other side of the coin is that trans women are biologically male and JK Rowling is just refusing to abide the delusion.

So, I can appreciate why trans people and trans allies aren’t fond of her, but whether or not she is transphobic depends on your definition of transphobia I suppose.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · Today 15:34

Any woman who didn't acquiesce in the trans project was (and often still is) a target, and accused of goodness knows what and all. Rowling defends herself, often with considerable humour, and defends the female victims of bullies many of whom are either trans or trans fellow travellers.

All ideologies need hate-figures. These vary according to time and ideology. For instance there was very little reason to hate the Jews in Germany, but they were a useful, and essentially helpless, scapegoat; it's not a coincidence that Orwell called the subject of the Two Minutes Hate in Nineteen Eighty-Four Emmanuel Goldstein.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmanuel_Goldstein

The mistake a particular group of people made about JK Rowling was in picking someone who refused to apologise for not agreeing with the ideologues, and was immune to being driven out of her job or otherwise destroyed. Someone who was very well-loved and much admired, too; her books had been and are very influential. So what might have appeared an easy target (a mere woman, after all) was in fact a tough cookie. This makes the sect-members and followers hate her more than ever.

What always baffles me is that people who claim to want to be women seem to hate actual women so much.

It is like Nazis attacking Jews. Totally baseless reasons for attacking someone, but because someone told you they were terrible then they must be, and you cannot stand up and say ‘actually I don’t think they’re that bad’ in public without the mob turning on you. The way the NHS, police, unis etc have swallowed all of the trans nonsense just goes to show how easily people fall for nonsense like Nazism. It’s really scary stuff.

Risk? The risk is that you are alienated from your son's GF and potentially from your son. If it's not a serious relationship that's a risk you might wish to take. OTOH you may one day be her MIL and she the mother of your grandchildren. If you've been on MN any time at all you know how carefully a MIL must tread.

As I said on my previous post, if you disagree with someone you don't have to tell them.

FloraFaunaFires · Today 15:45

This thread would be a whole lot simpler if most of the folk on it said that they were transphonbic themselves and so is JK Rowling.

Most of you are saying 'I don't like trans people and think trans people don't have the right to self determination not rights to access a bathroom that corresponds with their identified gender and lowers their risk of violent attack.'

That is transphobia.

Deliberately misgendering someone, or thinking you get to question others gender because they don't appear enough like a woman to you (as JK Rowling has done, accusing a woman boxer and various others of being trans, with no evidence) IS transphobia.

Being a trans-exclusionary feminist IS transphobia

JK Rowling using her fortune and noteriety to fund people through court who are trying to exclude trans people from spaces IS transphobia because she is specifically and repeatedly going after a vulnerable population.

Equating trans people to sexual predators or accusing them or sexual deviance IS transphobia.

The whole bathroom debate is madness because it is anti-feminist - it makes women less safe by creating a culture where we feel free to constantly question other people's gender and demand proof because they don't appear 'woman' enough to us - ie they don't conform to societal expectations of women. It creates danger for women who are deemed to have 'masculine' body types, facial hair such as through having PCOS etc.

Trans women do not make your bathrooms unsafe.

Dangerous men will do as they please regardless. They also now would be able to present themselves as being trans men using the women's bathroom, as now required by law, so you really haven't solved any problems this way!

DeftGoldHedgehog · Today 15:48

I don't care enough to look into it in great detail either way, but one thing I have noticed about people calling her names online, is that they tend to misquote or cherry-pick partial quotes, leaving out context, which says to me a lot more about them than her. I love her work and I judge people through their actions, such as paying their taxes correctly (all £47.5m of them).

And one of the things that made me leave Twitter long before it was X was the massive amount of horrific misogynistic commentary as a backlash to MeToo, some of which came from extreme TRAs, so I can understand why she got involved in the first place. It just became an absolute cesspit from something which had been quite fun to start with.

And according to those people what defines a woman also includes men. Sex is immutable. Trans women remain male. That’s fact. So it kind of invalidates their ‘evidence’. They just don’t like that she defends the rights of natal women.

There is plenty of evidence the boxer is male, exactly as JKR stated.

Happyjoe · Today 15:51

I have never seen anything written by her that justified anywhere near the amount of hate, death, rape threats as she received, it was and still is off the charts. The way she is treated was horrific and very much cemented one of the comments she made about male violence not proven to lessen in transwomen.

This.

It's why it's often better to ask occaional questions ie ask her what she thinks was said and when and how it was transphobic rather than try and prove her wrong or bring it up too often.

This is a movement that seem to like alienation of parent and child so most parents try and avoid that.

I saw a group oof movie reviewers all men correct the US men who tried to insited JKR was right wing - they were very firm she a lefty with a partciular view point on women's rights - so I think who she is and what she belives in has got out there -and just need to wait till GF catches up to that -the truth is out there kind of way.

You mean - calling women with opinions Transphobes is the quickest way to silence them into not having opinions. I am advised not to walk down dark alley ways alone for my safety and yet if I don't feel safe getting undressed in a changing room alone with a man in there I'm suddenly a Transphobe?. I'm suddenly safe because he's putting on lipstick. I will decide where and when I feel safe NOT anyone else, especially not a man.

Bathrooms are designated on the basis of sex not gender

all men would be safer in the ladies loos irrrespective of their gender - that’s just the issue with being male. Why should some men get special treatment ?

I am not denying anyone’s right to use a loo. And I’d be happy if changes were made to make all loos safer.

But if sex is the primary factor in anything from loos to sport - then I won’t accept someone’s gender as a stand in for sex.

especially when you look at the offending rates of transgender women - they don’t act like women so until they do I won’t accept them as one

Talk about misinterpreting everything you’ve read!

Nobody has said they don’t like trans people.

People think MEN should be in women’s single sex spaces. MEN. That’s all. MEN. If a transwoman is a man - and each and every trans woman is - they don’t belong in women’s single sex spaces. This isn’t even remotely controversial, but a law put in place to protect women from ending up as one of the nearly 1m women who are sexually assaulted by men each and every year. Do you have a problem with that?

Drliberately calling a man a man is an issue now? Were you not told not to lie as a child? I look at Ed Davey saying women can have penises and that’s just a clear cut lie being told by someone who wants me to vote for him. Why would I ever consider doing that? Why? He’s told lies, and doesn’t care about it.

No one is saying trans women are predators, they are saying MEN are predators and if you let one man in you have to let every man in, because there’s no way of telling if they’re a trans identifying man or a pervert.

Who has created the culture of questioning everyone’s gender (whatever that may be) if not trans rights activists?

I cannot believe your level of delusion, that you’re quite happy to espouse your delusion in a public message board, but also your lack of reading comprehension!
