What has JK Rowling said or done that’s transphobic

Ducketta · Today 13:26

Another thread has said that they don’t want their thread to be derailed. Y HK Rowling and morals, so I’ll start one. Can anyone please tell me what JK Rowling has ever said or done that’s transphobic? Please be specific and outline how she has been offensive to trans people and not just been protective women and girls hard fought right to separate single sex spaces.

I cannot find anything whatsoever that she has done wrong. Nothing. Nada. And yet this JK Rowling = queen of transphobia myth persists. And it’s bloody tiresome.

It all started with something droll, and also perfectly reasonable, she said on Twitter

On June 6, 2020, Rowling retweeted an op‑ed and then wrote in text quoted by multiple outlets: “People who menstruate. I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”

This made her the enemy, for some reason.

Rowling holds gender-critical beliefs under which sex is immutable and trans women remain male, campaigns to ensure that law and institutions treat sex rather than gender identity as decisive in all contexts, and repeatedly has used language that portrays trans female identity as false, performative or male intrusion. People who define transphobia as including systematic invalidation or denigration of transgender identities therefore have substantial direct evidence for calling her transphobic.

She has merely asserted that biological sex is a FACT.

I’m well aware that too many people are utterly clueless about basic biology, but a male cannot actually become female, whatever they like to call themselves. With a minute number of exceptions, every single cell in a human body is either XX or XY.

She also had a bit of a rant about the daft words the trans lobby and their brainwashed followers were insisting on using instead of plain WOMAN.

Emily Bridges, a man who wants to compete in women's cycling and said he will use the same spaces he always did, said on ITV that he doesn't like how she spends her money. He said she should spend it on rape centres (already has) women's rights (already does) and abortion rights (we already have these) and compared her to Trump. This is the kind of nonsense being thrown at her.

She gets accused of buying off judges and paying for court decisions.

She has been accused of posting an upskirting photo of a woman, when actually the photo is of a (very drunk and obnoxious) man who was sat in an undemure fashion on stage in a tiny skirt and, iirc, correctly, fishnets. Fred(a) Wallace if you want to look it up.

Anything she says or does is twisted. She opened a rape support centre but that was wrong because it's only for biological women and clearly only done out of spite to exclude TIM. I mean, it's bullshit.

On a side note, on fitting remark on this madness is in Aja's poem in which she said of trans young people (paraphrasing) "don't tell me you'll never regret your decisions, I've seen you crying over your Harry Potter tattoos."

Do not piss off your DS's girlfriend. Unless your DS is planning to have his nads cut off (in which case you have much bigger problems) it really doesn't matter what his girlfriend thinks of JKR. If she's nonbinary or some such then just bite your tongue. Otherwise you can use my strategy: if the girlfriend mentions JKR go all wide-eyed enthusiasm "oh she's my absolute hero!" and if the girlfriend has any sense at all then she will never mention the subject in front of you again.

Soontobe60 · Today 14:45

Firstbornunicorn · Today 13:57

Well she denies their existence on a regular basis.

Saying that a male is not a female isn’t “denying” anyone’s existence.

AprilMizzel · Today 14:45

I don't think she said anything - least that I've seen pointed to.

It's more - partly due to personal history of DV - that she spoken out for need for single sex spaces as UK law has always allowed despite what some pressure groups have claimed. Then failed to shut up when shouted and threatened.

Also it's becuase she is a successful woman - thoughout history women artist/writers/scientists/engineers get disassociated from their work - others get credit or it gets dimished. So people who try and remove her fom her famous series are just usual misogynistics what ever they think.

HereComesTheNight · Today 14:49

Ducketta · Today 13:59

Because my son’s girlfriend is so vehemently anti JKR and I don’t get it. What am I missing? I can’t find any examples of anything she’s said or don’t that are wrong, and I want to check before I ask her about it, which I’m going to do cause she is pissing me off so much. She seems to ignorant.

I wouldn't personally challenge the young people in my life who hold this view because I wouldn't want to risk it. Many young people see these things in black and white and, as with politics, believe that those with different opinions to them are "bad".

My niece and my son's GF are totally captured and I suspect if they had an inkling of my views they would be horrified and it would forever damage our relationship. I am perfectly capable of smiling and not engaging and if my opinion is different to theirs I feel no obligation to let them know.

AprilMizzel · Today 14:50

TBH best postion is to suggest GF gives you examples - as you want to understand becuase otherwise it just looks like usual misogynistic smear campaign towards a successful woman that is so frequent.

(Did try that with DD1 and she did go and look a bit deeper but ultimately we dropped it as a subject between us and she longer make comments about younger one liking Harry Potter or us going round merch shops).

Though in practise avoiding the conversation may be more diplomatic.

Whoachino · Today 14:52

I support her broad opinions on trans matters. If people consider her offensive because of these (ie because she believes that trans women are men and that female/woman should be defined by biological sex alone) then I don't understand that.

Where I think she borders on offensive is her sometimes gloating tone, and the apparent glee with which she celebrates some things which are obviously difficult for some people to manage. There is a more gracious way to behave than she sometimes manages.

Having said that, the vitriol she receives is way out of proportion and far more offensive.

SparklingTurquoiseOcean · Today 14:52

I regular see nonsense posts on Facebook saying that she funds anti trans charities, it's just men wanting to silence a strong successful woman with a point of view.
A board game café in our village put out a big sanctimonious Facebook post about how they have removed all Harry Potter board games and books from the shelves as not to "trigger and cause upset" and how "only good hearted people" are welcome. So now my child who is a Harry Potter fan feels that they deem her as a "not good hearted person" because she used to go in there and play the Harry Potter games. They have a big virtue signalling rainbow on the door saying "this is a safe space" A safe space only for those that share their views as in their view any Harry Potter fans are clearly "not good hearted people" I am not happy they've made my young daughter question what kind of person she is for liking Harry Potter and part of me wants to report them to Trading Standards because I believe the owners are using their beliefs to cherry pick customers, plus on the Facebook post they said it was not up for discussion and they don't entertain Bigots, so I couldn't even tell them how they made my daughter feel as they'd have just told me I am a Bigot.

SidewaysOtter · Today 14:53

Despite all the accusations, I've never seen anyone directly quote anything she's said that's transphobic. Even in discussions on here, JKR's detractors don't seem to be able to come up with a direct quote, just their own or others' interpretations. Of course, many don't seem to have actually read what she's stated on the subject, but that seems to be par for the course.

She has said things that trans people - and their allies - don't like, but that's not the same thing.

I believe she once offered £1m to anyone who could show she'd said anything transphobic and the money remains unclaimed.

She has also objected to men "feeding" babies medically induced lactation fluids from their nipples. Fluids that are not nutritionally beneficial or a substitute for actual breast milk and something that is only done to gratify the man's... something or other.
Apparently, on the other side of the looking glass that is an unreasonable view too.

Naunet · Today 14:54

She sees women as equal to men, rather than an extension of them and therefore is incredibly transphobic. The only way to not be transphobic, is to prioritise mens demands over womens needs.

mulberrymilk · Today 14:56

I can't imagine how awful it must feel for her to be on the receiving end of so much insane vitriol and violent threats just for stating a few Emperor's New Clothes style facts.

FlirtsWithRhinos · Today 15:00

Lacksie · Today 14:02

Saying “I don’t believe Catholic doctrine” is comparable to saying “I don’t believe gender identity corresponds to biological sex.” But Rowling repeatedly goes considerably further than that. She has described trans women as “men performing their idea of femaleness”, called a trans woman a “cosplaying man”, described recognising some trans women as women as a “foundational falsehood”, and repeatedly framed trans-inclusive policies in terms of men gaining access to women and providing “cover to predators”. The equivalent wouldn’t therefore be simply saying “I don’t believe Catholicism is true”. It would be repeatedly characterising Catholics themselves as pretending, fraudulent or dangerous.

That only works if Catholics were demanding that because they don't allow divorce or abortion, noone else is allowed a divorce or abortion either. In which case yes, I think people might well start to say very loudly they don't believe in the same things. As is in fact the case when it comes to those topics.

So the difference between Catholicism and Genderism is that Genderists are being allowed to let their beliefs about what a "woman" is override the self knowledge and actual legal rights of female people regardless of what those female people may believe or how we actually see ourselves. That is not ok.

Coconutter24 · Today 15:01

I just did a quick google and all I found was that she has said biological sex can’t be changed (which is correct) and she believes in keeping men out of women’s spaces.
I’m sure if I looked further there will be more stuff but what I have seen doesn’t seem unreasonable to me

Nah, this is your opportunity to teach your DD what real bigotry looks like: it looks exactly like a bunch of sanctimonious adults telling children that if they want to play a harmless popular game then they are not "good hearted people". Bigots are not evil and untouchable, they are just, well, bigots. Your DD can still go to their games cafe and enjoy whatever games they do have. It's fine for your DD to question what kind of person (a nice ordinary one) and also what kind of people the owners are. She doesn't have to argue with them, as a child she can just tolerate them.

JKR speaks about women & girls rights.

Women & girls rights to rights is transphobic apparently.

Many will have you believe that saying NO to men accessing womens spaces, (i.e. women & girls having some spaces that men can't access) even those men with professed "ladyfeels", is a hate crime against men with ladyfeels & NB's.

Which kind of proves "trans rights" are anti women & girls having rights to spaces without men.

that's pretty much it.

Risk what though? What are we risking? That people will think we’re nasty or something? It feels fairly hypocritical to me for me to think she’s a hero and then not stand up for her. Just checking in in the right here.

I asked Google what anti-trans charities there are. It gave me: LGB Alliance, Sex Matters, the J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund, FiLiA, Fair Play for Women, and Transgender Trend.

These entities defend women's sex-based rights and opportunities, people's right to be same-sex attracted, and children's right to live comfortably in their sexed bodies.

Not a single one has stated antipathy to 'trans' people, disbelief in their 'existence' or a desire to eradicate them.

Once again it is clearly demonstrated that supporting female independence and validating homosexuality are 'anti trans'. This should tell us all we need to know about 'pro-trans' values.

HollyhocksandPeons · Today 15:15

It is a bit tedious, no?

Merida46 · Today 15:16

She has said nothing transphobic. As the great Professor Robert Winston has already said;- "You cannot change your sex!"
