What has JK Rowling said or done that’s transphobic

Ducketta · Today 13:26

Another thread has said that they don’t want their thread to be derailed. Y HK Rowling and morals, so I’ll start one. Can anyone please tell me what JK Rowling has ever said or done that’s transphobic? Please be specific and outline how she has been offensive to trans people and not just been protective women and girls hard fought right to separate single sex spaces.

I cannot find anything whatsoever that she has done wrong. Nothing. Nada. And yet this JK Rowling = queen of transphobia myth persists. And it’s bloody tiresome.

This exactly. There are no examples of her being transphobic.

The belief that someone is born in the wrong body is just that - a belief. There’s no scientific backing to it. I don’t believe in gender identity just like I don’t believe in the teachings of the Catholic Church. It’s doesn’t mean I’m ‘Catholic Church-phobic’. There’s no crime in me saying I think the Catholic Church teachings are nonsense is there? Why the drama about someone thinking gender identity is made up nonsense?

Saying “I don’t believe Catholic doctrine” is comparable to saying “I don’t believe gender identity corresponds to biological sex.” But Rowling repeatedly goes considerably further than that. She has described trans women as “men performing their idea of femaleness”, called a trans woman a “cosplaying man”, described recognising some trans women as women as a “foundational falsehood”, and repeatedly framed trans-inclusive policies in terms of men gaining access to women and providing “cover to predators”. The equivalent wouldn’t therefore be simply saying “I don’t believe Catholicism is true”. It would be repeatedly characterising Catholics themselves as pretending, fraudulent or dangerous.

If you actually wanted the answer to this question wouldn't it be better to go on Reddit and directly ask someone who has accused her of transphobia?

Asking on Mumsnet will get you one worldview. If you genuinely want to hear the other view then go to where people with that view post.

I suspect that rather than wanting to hear why some people think she is transphobic you wanted lots of people who have the same view as you to post so you can feel vindicated.

I guess you got what you wanted looking at previous posts.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Because my son’s girlfriend is so vehemently anti JKR and I don’t get it. What am I missing? I can’t find any examples of anything she’s said or don’t that are wrong, and I want to check before I ask her about it, which I’m going to do cause she is pissing me off so much. She seems to ignorant.

She's just a silly young person who has no idea what she's on about. It's very annoying when it's in your own family like that, but you just have to smile and nod and hope either that she grows up or that your son moves on from the her. The same is true of the #FreePalestine mob. Not a clue what they're on about, but they think that they can bludgeon others into submission by sheer loud aggression.

Bad idea to get into conversation with your son's girlfriend about it. Just stay silent and she'll get tired of ranting. Can't understand why you're getting snotty comments about your thread. In my opinion JKR hasn't said or done anything wrong. It's just a witch hunt.

ExtraOnions · Today 14:07

Nothing, but she’s a Middle-Aged women, and Men like nothing more than to shut them up. She’s an easy Pantomime Villan.

Nobody, I’m history had ever changed sex, it’s a reality that we all know.

Happysnappydays · Today 14:11

Firstbornunicorn · Today 13:57

Well she denies their existence on a regular basis.

Can you explain this a bit more?

LlynTegid · Today 14:11

I consider JK Rowling to be standing up for women and girls, and in particular their safety. The law has the same view about sex being biological.

Others take a different view and have seemingly targeted JK Rowling as a high profile person whose writing is or has been read by millions.

BunfightBetty · Today 14:13

Merkins · Today 13:56

Why are you asking if you’ve already decided there’s no evidence? Just fancied arguing with strangers on a Tuesday afternoon? Will you be back later to ask why people think Tommy Robinson is racist when he’s just pro-white? 🙄

You're comparing JK Rowling to Tommy Robinson? Wow, that's quite the hyperbolic reach.

akkakk · Today 14:13

Lacksie · Today 13:37

Rowling holds gender-critical beliefs under which sex is immutable and trans women remain male, campaigns to ensure that law and institutions treat sex rather than gender identity as decisive in all contexts, and repeatedly has used language that portrays trans female identity as false, performative or male intrusion. People who define transphobia as including systematic invalidation or denigration of transgender identities therefore have substantial direct evidence for calling her transphobic.

Or summarised as people who endorse make-believe (that you can change sex)
invent things to make their points...

  • Sex is immutable - whether believed or not.
  • 'trans women' are men by definition (otherwise they would be women not 'trans-women')
  • there is no such thing as gender identity (gender is a societal snapshot of the current stereotype, so it comes from externally, not internally) - you can't therefore 'identify' as something.
  • therefore a 'trans female identity' (whatever that might be!) can only be false or performative or male intrusion
  • People can define transphobia however they like - as sex is immutable, so you can not transition - therefore trans is not possible. If trans is not possible, so transphobia is not possible.

So, sounds pretty accurate...

and not possible to be transphobic, so under any any definition, JKR can't be considered transphobic...

[She] called a trans woman a “cosplaying man”

She said a particularly unpleasant person was "cosplaying a misogynistic male fantasy of what a woman is". Just like I can say Russell Brand is cosplaying a vile abuser's idea of what a Christian is. Or can't I say that either?

GargoylesofBeelzebub · Today 14:15

Well she denies their existence on a regular basis.

And? Not believing in Allah is not Islamophobia and similarly not believing in trans ideology is not transphobia.

Reddit posters haven't been able to quote anything either. Because she hasn't said anything transphobic.

That's why no-one here will quote her either, they will just tell OP to look elsewhere.

Yetanotherone12 · Today 14:19

Hasn’t someone offered a £1m prize to the person who can definitively show JK Rowling is transphobic?

it’s still on offer as far as I know, which says it all…

She has described trans women as “men performing their idea of femaleness”

Well as all 'trans women' are by definition men this seems quite reasonable - they must be performing, and it is always going to be their idea of femaleness, because being male they are never going to have any personal experience of being female.

called a trans woman a “cosplaying man”

as above - all 'trans women' are men - so the man bit is accurate and I guess if they dress as a woman typically does then cos-playing sounds pretty accurate...

described recognising some trans women as women as a “foundational falsehood"

I think it would be more accurate to say that recognising all / any 'trans women' as women would be a 'foundational falsehood' - anyone born male will always remain male so to every recognise a man as a woman would be a falsehood...

repeatedly framed trans-inclusive policies in terms of men gaining access to women and providing “cover to predators”

pretty accurate - such 'trans-inclusive' policies do give men access to women (e.g. letting men into changing spaces / toilets / women's refuges) - we have seen examples of men (claiming to be women) gaining access to e.g. women's prisons and seeing their predatory behaviour continue there...

backformoreofthesame · Today 14:26

She doesn’t deny their existence. she just denies that men are women. She knows problem exist who think they are women. Since you can only be a transwoman if you are a man she’s pretty logical really

The issue is the collision of worldview.

Sex is in certain situations such as sport or changing rooms important and male people in those situations shouldn't be treated as women = denying someone's gender identity

Allowing access to female changing rooms on the basis of self declared gender identity will be abused by predators = all transwomen are seen as predators

Some children are confused and uncomfortable by puberty and this shouldn't be treated with hormones, blockers and surgery = denying life saving medical treatment

Sex as biological sex = pushing trans people out of society

JK and gender critical people sit on the left of the =, trans ideology on the right

Pingponghavoc · Today 14:30

She doesnt believe that people can change sex, and believes that single sex services are important therefore she is considered transphobic.

Critics will say that no one is saying anyone can literally change sex, and its gender thats important, not sex.

Its a 'difficult' debate because there is no definition of gender. Some who think she is transphobic state that anyone is trans the moment they declare that they are, others think it involves surgery and drums.

BMW58 · Today 14:30

Firstbornunicorn · Today 13:57

Well she denies their existence on a regular basis.

Don't be do bloody ridiculous. No-one denies their existence - how could we when they make so much effort to be seen!!

What many of us deny is that men can become women and vise versa.

I, and many others, believe that Sex is immutable and whatever surgery is done, whatever medication is taken, whatever a person wears, that person is still the sex they were conceived.

You don't agree - but your beliefs do not overrule ours and the Law upholds our belief in certain circumstances.

Correct. She has violated the "No Debate" edict (as have you, OP, and I).

I disagree with Lacksie's later contribution, though. I can and do dispute religious beliefs - no-one's called me Christianphobic or Islamophobic; it is recognised that strong beliefs may conflict and we live in a society that supports debate.

If Christians were using the law to force everyone to act as if the Bible were undisputed truth, to call church officials Father and Brother, to praise virginity and piety, then you'd have something more like an analogy.

Can you point to a first hand quote from her where she has denied their existence?

...

Thought not

Terfarina · Today 14:40

A lot of young people will say they hate her for being transphobic but can't tell you anything she has said or done that is transphobic.

She doesn't put up with shit from the likes of Jonathan Willybooby and some will think that saying no to someone pretending to be the opposite sex is wrong and therefore transphobic.

She's an utter queen!
