OMG Miriam Margolyes Andi Peters

I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??

Many years ago, Oliver Reed was a very similar type talk show guest. No one knew whether he had been drinking or not and his unpredictability and outrageousness made “good” entertainment.

I think TV producers sometimes like people like OR or MM because they’re a bit risqué and thereby generate good viewing figures. If it all goes pear shaped, the blame can be blamed on the individual, not on the broadcaster.

I suppose Graham Norton enjoys the spectacle. Kind of parasitic.

No doubt she will offer a sad faced public apology and Andi Peters will accept it with more grace than she deserves. Perhaps she will lay low for a while then, give us all a break.

She’s got form for this sort of thing. I’ve just remembered when she couldn’t stop staring at Will.i.am on Graham Norton and eventually said ‘I’m just fascinated by you! Unfortunately I don’t know many black people’. Excruciating!

Will.i.am was very gracious about it and Greg Davies who was also on the sofa gave the impression that he was laughing at Miriam rather than with her.

She’s repugnant and I never understood why people found “fat old gay lady swearing” so hilarious that she got to make multiple TV programmes based on it. She’s deeply unpleasant and thrives on making people feel uncomfortable.

Miriam Margolyes is 85. We are not talking about a generation which is learning that racism is wrong in their old age. Racism has been considered unacceptable throughout most of her adult life. If she was exposed to racism as a child, she has had many decades in which to re-educate herself. Her age is neither an explanation or an excuse, and it is terribly ageist to argue that she is old so doesn't know any better.

Yes I found this confusing actually. You're right, she did say at the end "I haven't said anything wrong have I?" in a rather dramatic faux innocent voice/facial expression, and the bit that confused me was that Andi himself replied "No you haven't". And Christine said "You've been lovely".
She'd said multiple 'wrong' things in 7 minutes. The abject racism towards Andi. The mocking of Christine's accent. The shaming of this unknown daughter with her mother in a care home (she even used the word "shoved" in to a care home in relation to the elderly woman she is apparently visiting this afternoon).
IDK maybe they just wanted to hurry up and get her off their couch. But I really hope they were both thinking something totally different in their minds.
How can we get this mumsnet thread to Andi & Christine? I want them both to read it!

That poster also used a double negative. ‘Would not be considered unacceptable now’. I had to read it three times to be sure what he/she meant.

Unfortunately, an education or a posher upbringing is no barometer to racist opinnions. I work in a professional environment medical / educaion and some of the higher qualified who waft around judging the poor uneducated that they are paid to serve are the most racist people Ive ever met as that they dont even know they are racist, whilst they point the fingers at others lower down the so-called chain. MM is one of them!

I'm friends with a lady who lives in Moscow, i messaged her when the war in Ukraine kicked off. She was really upset about it, doesn't support Putin, etc. Her adopted DS was born in Ukraine. Still check in with her from time to time.

Meanwhile, I've never heard that term. I've read books like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer which use some language that is outdated.

I've seen MM referred to as a female Harvey Weinstein on here before, and didn't like her when she criticised JKR. Didn't realise she was racist as well.

She was a terrific actress who brought a lot to her roles. She voiced lots of classic audio books beautifully. I’m not sure quite when she morphed into Professionally Off Kilter National Treasure.

She's not laying low. She was talking about her three month tour, which sadly commenced on Tuesday.

Well yes outrage is her schtick. But I have a feeling she was attempting woke cringe-bonding with Andy just as Ted Danson famously used the n word of his then girlfriend Whoopi Goldberg.

She always makes judgemental personal remarks and seems to think this perfectly permissible instead of the height of rudeness.

I watched telling her producer how fat he was not long ago. Why does anybody need to do that?

She has no boundaries and here she is crossing another one today with AP.

Her crude sexual comments seem to go down a storm with some gay men in particular, see Graham Norton and Alan Cummings, but the things she says aren’t funny. They are just vulgar.

I would love to see her career fade away.

Horribly smug and mean minded woman for all her pretence at kindness and humility.

She has won a following for being crude. Some people who chortle at her 'wit' will carrying on chortling. Others will draw a line, because - as most reasonable people know - racism is inexcusable.

Racism isn't charmingly addled. It's not eccentrically endearing. It's not 'punk rock.'

Her behaviour was racist. It's down to the individual whether they want to 'linguistically' bend themselves into ridiculous shapes to try to excuse it.

I found it really sad that talk shows continued to feature Reed long past the point it had become blatantly obvious he was a very unwell man. He reminded me of one of my school peers who went from being the class clown to the local pub clown. He was in there every night, drinking until he could no longer speak or stand and everyone thought it was hilarious 😔

The entertainment industry is brutal like that. There is little care for anyone’s well-being- just keep wheeling out the freaks and the unwell for everyone to point and laugh at.

But Reed had alcoholism and needed treatment. Miriam is just rude and offensive; I don’t think it’s the same thing (unless Miriam has dementia or Alzheimer’s, in which case she too is being exploited).

Socially, I think we are conditioned to say that we aren't offended in such situations, even if we are. And tbh, if Andi Peters had turned round and said "well, actually, yes, you've been really racist", then I strongly suspect that he would have faced a backlash of his own.

It's weird how social conventions often prevent us from saying what we really think.

Well there is an American rapper called 'Latto' she had to drop her original artist name of 'Mulatto' to appease people who found it not appropiate.

Producers must know she is an unfiltered loose cannon and put her on to get a response from the audience. It’s not entertaining, just cringe worthy. It’s unacceptable language and hugely disrespectful to Andi Peters. Time to stop booking her for live telly.

well, at 85 and the fact she is at the peak of her health, I don't think you'll have long to wait to see her career fade away, no matter how much Royal Jelly she consumes to fuel her longevity and "brutal honesty"
