I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??

She probably isn't racist and didn't mean to offend him, and i don't say that to defend her, she is just naturally rude and twatty enough to believe that as a national treasure 🙄she can say anything without offence. Horrible woman.

My father is 88 and he has known that racism is wrong for many decades.

It isn't an age thing. It's just a racism thing.

How could she say the things that she said without being racist? This is a genuine question, what else could have driven her to say what she said?

Bloody hell. I don't think I've ever come across that term outside a historical context in literature or tv - in "The Color Purple" and "Roots", for example.

A mixed race person is, a mixed race person. Could be mixed with black+white, black+indian etc etc. A 'high yella' person is not just a decription of the person's skintone but of their bio makeup. So, a very lightskin black person is just that, and some use the term 'high yella'. Yes, some of these have a white person intheir bloodline but it'll be a grandparent/great grandparent

To pp: Regardless of why she asked about his parents skin colour (age, dementia etc) it isn’t ok. The description of her comment about his skin and follow up comment about ‘inclusion’ and all being welcome is outrageous.
Apparently she was warned on her earpiece and ended the interview asking if she offended anyone. She said told no.

What she said was overtly racist in several ways. How do you conclude she's not racist?

Now that I've actually quoted you I'm a bit confused by the double negative so I'm not sure what you meant. I've assumed you meant either 'would not be considered acceptable now' or 'would be considered unacceptable now'.

People from that generation have known for decades that racism is wrong. It is not a new concept, and if they choose to say racist things, it really isn't because they don't know that it's not acceptable. It is because they don't care.

There are racist people of all ages. Perhaps some older people lose their filter and get worse at covering it up. But racism has been unacceptable since they were young adults. They know.

I worded it clumsily @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack but i mean she probably doesn't dislike, fear, or feel superior to people of colour, and as a 'woke' person, who is known for being very inclusive, she feels that she can say what she likes without offence. It was a ridiculously stupid thing to say, she loves to be outrageous but she has gone too far this time imo. I can't stand the woman, if she wasn't gay she wouldn't have a career.

MM has been accused of racism plenty of times in the past.

I think that she feels she can comment and make jokes about race because she is from marginalised groups herself due to being Jewish and gay.

I've done a quick Google and even online academic notes are wary of using the term that Margoyles uttered.

I think I vaguely remember it being used to describe a famous American singer many, many years ago. (I'm in Scotland and in my late '60s.) It was a quote in a biographical article, I think.
