I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??

Nah, I'm far from being a snowflake but what she said was more than stupid. Suddenly referencing AP having one white parent (for no apparent reason) and then using a racial slur to describe his skin tone.

I feel very sorry for AP having to listen to that on national live tv, in 2026.

We can agree it was bad judgement. I don’t agree about her age though. I agree with @Holidaymodeon that some of her generation have “stinking attitudes”. Pulling out an old slavery term is very characteristic of that generation and lack of awareness.

I actually got the impression she thought she was going to impress Andy with her US lingo.

Margolyes has spent years coasting off her image of "old lady who says inappropriate things, which people find hilarious and endearing." She obviously thought a racist comment would be one of those hilarious and endearing things, but it's backfired on her.

Poor Andi. She was very disrespectful to him, but he handled it well.

She knows exactly what she's doing.
No one is laughing at her vulva routine now so she's moved on to other shock tactics.
I hope the horrible, crude and offensive moron gets cancelled. She is utterly talentless and boring.

I think it's quite o.k. to ask people if they are mixed race, I myself have one and many women and friends I know do too. They come in all shades.
You would never guess that a high-blonde with a very dark-skinned adult son were in anyway related.
Where I live there's all kinds of mixed race (adult) kids, asian, african, south american.

I don't know why you'd ask, though? How is someone's racial background relevant, 99% of the time? If a blonde woman says, "oh, this is my son," about a man who is obviously mixed race, then clearly either he's adopted, or her husband is of another race. It's not exactly interesting information.
My own children are mixed race, and it's never been relevant for others to bring up in casual conversation, except when we've been talking about doing cultural activities that relate to their dad's heritage.

The way MM brought it up was unnecessary, insulting, and made use of racist terminology.

I saw it. I hadn’t heard that expression before and googled it. The first line described it as offensive and derogatory, which MM obviously knew.

Andi Peters handled it really well. She’s a disgusting woman. Can’t bloody stand her. I remember her on Graham Norton, I think it was, describing having a cavity search in a police station and how much she enjoyed it 🤮🤮🤮

Unfortunately, (understatement) I wonder if she was implying lighter skinned black people were more attractive & more patrician (& therefore Andi himself - giving him a compliment as she saw it) by using ‘that’ term? Movies/books plantation owners/Antebellum south & house staff. Which is how I’ve seen it historically referenced.

She said it was used in America as if it was current (!)

Or maybe she was just showing her knowledge for other words meaning mixed? Why flag anything at all apropos of nothing?

Your spouse is not able to make you or stop you doing anything. - that's true, especially as Margoyles seems outwardly well enough to make her own decisions.

Her wife has been retired for some time, no reports of her being ill but also possible. It does seem odd they have never lived together permanently but it doesn't necessarily mean the relationship is fake.

What is offensive about that?

This is definitely a side issue but having met her in real life as a young a woman I am so surprised that she is still generally accepted as a nice celeb. I worked in a restaurant where she was ‘acting’ nearby and I’ve never met someone so lewd and letchy towards young woman including myself. Her language gestures and physical inappropriateness was completely off the scale, it scared me and made me uncomfortable. I’ve never been able to stand the sight of her since.

I hadn't heard the term she used but took a guess that it's offensive. It is. By your reason there's another word meaning black, maybe she could use that too.
