I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.

I've also watched it now. It's not good in any way but it is some how less awful seeing it than it is reading it without tone on paper. She does go on to see we are all about inclusion and welcome everyone. It comes across more her normal unfiltered first thing that comes into her head rather than maliciously racist. I'm not defending it just saying that on paper I imagined it as more aggressive and deliberately attacking.

Andi Peters does deal with it well. Christine whatsit just sits there and giggles which is not the way to respond. Their different levels of skill and experience with live television was very apparent.

Hmm, you don't see anything wrong with her telliing him what colour skin his parents have? Why would he need someone who's never met his folks to do that for him?

@BigYellowBus I had a look at this book and was thinking of getting it. Do you need to have read others in the series or can you read it as a stand alone? Is it sort of cosy crime? Imagining it might be set in a theatre dressing room

Well this is true. On many a thread like this, people are clamoring to say their granny who is 130 would be horrified at racist words/comments/phrases and know 'racism is wrong' but in reality, people are simply taught not to say things that was normal when they were young. Its not that they always know its wrong, they're just told its wrong so dont do it/say it.

I am perplexed too, she was clumsy that's for sure but old people have no filter, literally. The obsession with race must stop. It's a mental illness. Black people don't have this obsession with white people. For what it's worth I'm a darker shade of midnight 😀

Brian Clough (who would be 91 if alive now) and Sir Henry Cooper (who would be 92) were founders and funders of the Anti Nazi League. They both abhorred racism in all its forms.

I judge them by their behaviour and actions (very favourably) as I do MM, differently, because it is words and actions that count, words and actions that matter.

ETA as I realise that I am old now, Brian C was a renowed football manager and Henry C possibly the best boxer the UK ever produced. Both born white Brit working class.

But if you've had an eye on MM for the last, ooh, couple of decades, you'll know that this ISN'T an 'old people' thing! She's been like this, literally, forever! Either she has no filter because she has a neurodevelopment condition (and I've never heard that claimed) or she opens her mouth to let the filth out and doesn't give a toss about it, or anyone listening. She's absolutely only booked onto sofa and magazine shows these days because they know she's going to say something outrageous. And she obliges. I think it's less about her 'not having a filter' and more of a contrived thing, but I also think it speaks volumes about her personal character.

And I agree with a poster a page or so ago who said, because she's a bit of a darling of the Left, it's generally felt she gets away with this as 'bantz'. Frankly I'm ashamed to share the same (very broad) area of the political spectrum with her.

I haven’t seen much of her but reading these posts I’m glad. It all sounds contrived.

We love watching him on QVC selling pies and chocolate mostly. He is hilarious but we comment every time that he looks exactly the same as he did in the cupboard!!

Awful! I was around her once at a farmers market of all things, and I still to this day remember her as a nasty cow. This doesn’t surprise me. And yes, I completely get that famous people shouldn’t be gawped at and should have their privacy but I always remember how utterly unpleasant she was. Here in London there are lots of famous people, so it’s not an unusual thing to see famous people, for context.

I get the horrible feeling MM thought she might have been trying to endear herself to Peters and Lampard by showing some sort of knowledge of their backgrounds. And yes she is generally seen as A Good Sort by the likes of Owen Jones. Self identifies as "unapologetically woke"
