OMG Miriam Margolyes Andi Peters

Temptree · Yesterday 12:16

I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??
Whoah.

Well, I mean, I think she was racist.
She said to Andi "I bet you've got a black father and a white mother haven't you".
No context.
None.
Andi wasn't talking about his heritage.
He said "Actually both my parents are black". She acted surprised and said "Oh you look like a high yella"
Andy looked like he hadn't heard of this description so she elaborated by saying "It's what American people call black people who are a lighter shade of black"
Andy said he didn't know you could get 'different shades' which was said with an understandable sarcastic tone in his voice and he looked shocked.
She went on to say "Well it doesn't matter, we welcome people, we'll be inclusive......"
WTF? We need to be inclusive? Andi was born here, in Chelsea.
OMG
So many assumptions made by her based on his race. And blurting them out on national TV!
Christine Lampard looked like she just didn't know what to say.
Then Miriam was saying she's got strong views about people coming in to the country but at that point they cut her off and wrapped up the interview.
Disclaimer - this is not exact quotes. I was so shocked I can't remember verbatim.

Either she needs a new glasses prescription or she is going senile. If she meant it looks stereotypically birracial she is doollaley. He has the skin tone of an average black person. He hardly looks like Markle or Zendaya.

And yeah just to throw it in there is weird. Strange woman.

She is definitely going senile.

”High yella”. What on earth is she talking about?!

I don’t know who andI peters is. What exactly was wrong with what she said? She asked him if he was mixed race, and he isn’t? Please explain! Oh ok just saw she said high yella. Is that from Tennessee?

Edited

It’s a very odd thing to ask somebody out of the blue.

TwilightSkies · Yesterday 18:14

Asking people what their race is is VERY strange and inappropriate. Especially when white people do it.

He must have a portrait in the attic because I remember him presenting in The Broom Cupboard and he hadn't aged a day!

I saw him in real life outside a train station and was thinking similar. I am sure I have been watching him on TV since I was a young woman and he looks the exact same.

I genuinely find it weird and strange no matter who does it. Immediately changes the way I view them when they ask.

I am shocked that (according to the poll) 45% of people on the poll think that MM's behaviour is OK.

Go figure! Shock

I’m not.

TooOrangey · Yesterday 18:20

Phillip Schofield used to say she was his favourite guest, which says a lot really.

He and Holly doing all that fake sniggering and shock. I’m so glad they’re history for this alone.

Shes always been vile but I'm sure she believes she can say whatever she wants now shes old and we will all laugh it off and think her funny and quirky. I just think she is an absolute knob-head and about as funny as a migraine.

I agree with this assessment. She thinks she's hilarious as an older person coming out with crude, offensive comments. It's neither funny nor actually shocking. We all know she's gross and it's pathetic as she's playing up to something she thinks is there which isn't. She's had a long career. You'd think she could just tell some entertaining anecdotes. It seems not.

JHound · Yesterday 18:31

Marleyandme71 · Yesterday 15:15

I googled it...

She can’t have ever seen a black person in her life if she views Peters as light-skinned with a stereotypical mixed raced skin tone. He is fairly dark skinned!

PinkyFlamingo · Yesterday 18:32

emuloc · Yesterday 15:34

Yeah, a right set up, a complete trap eh?🙄

I have no idea if it was or wasn't? Just pointing out of all the guest presenters they have had on since Ben and Cat are on holiday such as Craig, Christine, Rylan and Josie, Miriam was booked today when it was Andi's turn.

JHound · Yesterday 18:34

PocketSand · Yesterday 15:45

I’m not sure that she was being ‘racist’ in a ‘woke’ environment for shock value but attempting (albeit badly) to transcend the talk show narrative to actually discuss race. I don’t believe that she condones discrimination based on race or any other characteristic. Once learning that Andi was not mixed race as both his parents were black she then referred to earlier genetic heritage. In a crude way. If Andi did a program such as ‘who do you think you are’ the same issues may be raised. Would that be racist?

How can we discuss discrimination if we are not able to discuss the different ways that discrimination operated in terms of race, sexuality, religion etc. The categories are arbitrary but the experience is real.

They weren’t discussing discrimination. She simply asked him what he is out the blue.

zanahoria · Yesterday 18:34

She asked Andi Peters 'What are you?'

Never mind Andi, we all know what you are, Miriam

An offensive term, used in the USA.

Uricon2 · Yesterday 18:36

Another point. I don't believe that anyone in the UK entertainment industry wouldn't have some vague idea who Andi Peters was (I was an adult when he was in the broom cupboard but had a little sibling and always much preferred him to Schofield 😂) and could thus undertake a 2 second Google that shows he was born in Chelsea and raised in Shropshire. I simply don't believe that in the 21st C, celebs don't do some elementary research on who will be interviewing them.

It was deliberate, to what end I cannot guess. Perhaps she knew the usual smut might get complaints at 11 AM and went down another 'shock' route.

Yes I know the term. Hence why I asked “what is she on about?”. Nobody uses that term as a general description in this day and age.

Aluna · Yesterday 12:30

At 85 it’s difficult to know if it’s a generation thing or whether she’s hit dementia.

It's definitely not a generational thing and just because she's 85 doesn't mean she's going to 'hit' dementia. Dementia is not a stage old people go through, it a disease.

She's always been deeply unpleasant, now she's old and deeply unpleasant.

Sorry! Yes, you're quite right. She's obviously thinking she's in Mississippi in 1962.

DecisionTime123 · Yesterday 18:44

Is there no coverage at all? Has anyone seen anything in the press? And "high yella" is a derogatory term - its just not as well known as phrases like "coloured" or "half caste" which we used to hear a lot in the 70s, but its totally unacceptable. What a bitch she is knowing the poor guy would try and let her off the hook so as to keep the programme moving.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Yesterday 18:45

Aluna · Yesterday 16:46

I’ll tell you what I don’t like: white middle class finger wagging about something they don’t really understand.

You think I’ve missed the point because you can’t compute my perspective.

You misinterpret my observation about that generation as an “excuse” and treat it as an opportunity to lecture perfomatively on a subject of which you quite clearly have little experience.

So - I don’t actually care what you find. Ime overt racism is more common in that generation and if you talk to the people who work with then on a daily basis, you might discover this. That doesn’t mean that younger generations are less racist, they’re just more aware of what can and can’t be said publicly and on TV.

You seriously believe that an educated woman is unaware that it isn't ok to make racist comments on TV?

I remember Andi Peters was on the first ever series of 'Dancing on Ice' - he unfortunately seemed to have no aptitude for ice skating at all - I remember feeling sorry for him because he looked petrified, teetering on his skates.

anon666 · Yesterday 18:46

Oh that's horrible. Belittling as well as racist. He's such a lovely guy, who would dream of doing that?

I expect she will be cancelled, if she isn't already. I think she had trodden the route of having "no filter" and got away with stuff in the past but I can't see how this can be tolerated.
