I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??
Whoah.

ITV need to issue a proper apology

We apologise for the shameless attention seeking race baiting comments by Miriam Margolyes and we promise never to have the old bore on again

BitOutOfPractice · Yesterday 14:36

I stopped thinking this woman was amusing, charming or interesting years ago. This puts a tin lid on it.

After a long trawl along the lonely beach that is this thread, I can still confirm there are no such things as magic words ....

Cynically, I'd say it's like she has gone out of her way to research something shocking to say/ask that she can then claim she didn't know was problematic.

GN seems to be her No. 1 fan, he absolutely fawns all over her.

He seems to really love her awful stories about pleasuring random blokes when she's on his show. 🙄

She can be really vile - on the other hand, this is hardly new information and shows keep inviting her on, and they absolutely KNOW she will say something wildly offensive or inappropriate in some way..

SO I can only conclude they do this KNOWING how she will behave because they want the ratings and the discussions that will arise - such as this one.

Tbh, I have more issue with the people who decided to have MM on than MM herself - she's not changing now, I don't actually think she is racist (as in, I don't think she believes one colour or race of person is superior to another), but she says whatever she thinks will get the biggest reaction, and doesn't give a fuck if it upsets anyone, which you could argue makes her no better. I do think she thinks as an old lady and a jewish lesbian she has some sort of 'pass' to say what she likes.

A racist person - holds prejudiced or discriminatory views against people based on their race, ethnicity, or nationality.

You say about MM - I don't actually think she is racist (as in, I don't think she believes one colour or race of person is superior to another),

Well, from what she said today...

It's so manipulative - her entire outrageously offensive schtick exploits the social convention that it's rude to make a fuss. It's quite Trump like.

Reminds me of Boris Johnson, the sort of thing you only get away with in this country if you are posh

I'd never heard of 'high yella' but, as a point of interest, some time back I remember reading up on the Ry Cooder (well, traditional, really) song, On A Monday. A line of the lyrics goes

And I ain't gonna bring them yellow women no pail

The singer is in prison. The yellow women were apparently mixed race prostitutes, and he resents being told to take a pail of water over to them. Actually the RC version is transcribed on the Genius lyric site as 'bail', but I believe that to be wrong; it shown as 'pail' on a Leadbelly version.

She is fucking vile

Temptree · Yesterday 14:43

Just remembered, as well she said to Andi "What are you?".

What are you?
OMG😮

I watched and witnessed her being appallingly, blatantly racist.

She is racist.

Without the use of the word “ old” as a pejorative, since Agism is toxic too, remember?

I'm trying to get my head around this. Andi Peters was at work, therefore he was abused at work, and MM asked if she had said anything wrong ??

ITV really need to issue an apology to their employees and the viewers.

CatLady199 · Yesterday 14:49

I really dislike her. Hate the try hard to shock all the time. It's very tiresome 🙄🤦

They really do.
He should not be expected to just accept racism.
He is owed apologies.

I used to avoid any programme featuring Miriam Margolyes. She seemed to go out of her way to shock people and say incredibly vile things. But then I watched the documentary Miriam Margolyes Made Me Me last summer, and she came across completely differently. I changed my opinion of her.
I realised that perhaps she shocks people because that’s what they expect from her and she certainly knows how to play up to it! Behind all the outrageous comments, she seems to be an incredibly caring and funny person who has helped so many people.
Just as many people hate her as absolutely adore her. She has so many fans. Her previous autobiography, This Much Is True, became a massive number-one bestseller and stayed in the top ten for over a year. So with her new book coming out today, all this attention is pretty amazing publicity for her. 😂
She certainly knows how to keep herself in the spotlight!

I didn’t watch it but wanted to say spending your day off on sofa with day time telly on after a busy period sounds very relaxing. You deserve it, no need for any shame.

It is tiresome and also cowardly.

She keeps pushing people to tell her to fuck off but knows that they won't as they are on live television

Aprilfountain · Yesterday 14:51

Phillip Schofield used to say she was his favourite guest, which says a lot really.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · Yesterday 14:51

Ooh that woman is a dreadful, awful racist. I think I'd turn it off if I saw it. It reminds me of the time an old Chairman I knew referred to some Chinese students helping out at an exhibition we were running as "our little yellow friends"...! 😳😱

No doubt both him and Miriam would probably say that to me as a mixed Chinese person, or something along those lines! People really are terrible.

Right, that’s interesting. Makes me think of Josephine Baker, Shirley Bassey. Starting to comprehend the phrase.
actually in Britain I don’t think we have made such tonal Distinctions.
In India I think there was a caste system based on colour. Hard to fathom in these days, isn’t it!

Oh hang on, wasn't she the voice of a rabbit on a chocolate advert? It's coming back to me now!

Yes. That was her.

Race baiting / racist - what is the difference?

If I was at work, like Andi and Christine, and someone said 'what are you?' to me referring to my skintone and/or race I would not take it as race baiting. If someone this to me and I was not at work I'd cuss them out.

I've had white people say to my face, 'you're not really that black' due to my skintone and I've cussed them out.

I'm not trying to goad you, I'd like to know what is the difference between being a racist and race baiting.
