OMG Miriam Margolyes Andi Peters

Temptree · Yesterday 12:16

I've got an annual leave day today and am spending the morning shamelessly on the sofa watching daytime TV with cups of tea and biscuits after an exhausting school summer hols. Kids back at school today. I've given myself permission to vegetate till 3:15pm.
So here I am watching This Morning and have just spent 5 minutes with my jaw wide open and hand over my mouth at what Miriam Margolyes just said to Andi Peters.
Did anyone else see it??
I mean it takes a lot to shock me. I am not easily shocked.
And this woman is currently doing a sell out tour??
Whoah.

Must we use ‘ old’ as a slur? Here we are looking at racism. How about also paying attention to habitual agism?

Temptree · Yesterday 15:02

zanahoria · Yesterday 14:47

It is more race baiting than racist.

She will take any issue to kick up a fuss so she can be centre of attention

"It's is more race baiting than racist"

I don't really understand what you mean by this.

Please can you explain what you mean?

Right, that’s interesting. Makes me think of Josephine Baker, Shirley Bassey. Starting to comprehend the phrase.
actually in Britain I don’t think we have made such tonal Distinctions.
In India I think there was a caste system based on colour. Hard to fathom in these days, isn’t it!

Yes, in the south of England but in the north east of England there is some words for tonal distinctions (as you put it). Also, Shirley Bassey is mixed race so this term that MM used would not be appropiate.

The Indian caste system still holds strong in India, the UK, America, Canada and elsewhere.

joyava · Yesterday 15:04

MM is a one trick pony - deliberately causing offence & finishing off with a tongue in cheek “I hope I haven’t offended anyone” - she couldn’t care less about offending people.
Her carry on has made her a doyenne of the chat show circuit. Graham Norton, Jonathan Ross & Joe Lycett all seem to revel in her obnoxiousness. I refuse to watch anything with her in it as I find her vile.

angelos02 · Yesterday 15:04

I saw this and was the same as you OP. I knew there'd be a thread about it. I wouldn't be surprised if it blows up in the media too. I am not easily shocked or offended but I was aghast at what she said - especially the line about 'everyone is welcome'. Outrageous.

Marellain · Yesterday 15:05

@EarthaKittsVoice was saying ‘ tonal’ problematic? I’m a painter, I love colour and I might have used a tone deaf word? Honestly you are so well informed and share with such clarity, Thankyou.

itsalltoplayfor · Yesterday 15:10

She seems to glory in being outrageous and crude. She's not daft, she could rein it in but likes the mischief. Good actress in certain roles but a terrible woman in other respects. Didn't she move to Australia? Maybe she's just here to do a tour.
Graham Norton laps it up when she's on his chat show but you can see the other guests are appalled sometimes. If you check out Graham and Maria McErlane's podcast 'Wanging On' the conversation can be similarly low rent so maybe he's like MM too but just more circumspect on TV.
As far as I'm concerned she's not a 'national treasure' - she's a national embarrassment!

Gloriia · Yesterday 15:10

YankSplaining · Yesterday 13:03

I guess some people thought that very light-skinned black people had a yellowish tinge to their skin? Looking at Andi Peters, he doesn’t look like what most Americans would consider to be particularly light-skinned for a black person.

Yes but even if you think it you'd think she'd have the common sense not to say it.

Oh let's hope that puts be an end to her many cringeworthy chat show appearances going on and on about farts.

We can only hope some high profile commentators are outraged by this and shame her.

No, not at all. I used it for ease and continuing the chat/thread

PinkyFlamingo · Yesterday 15:11

ITV booked her, they know what she's like. Bit of a coincidence there was a black presenter on the day they booked her for to eh. 🙄

angelos02 · Yesterday 15:13

Andi took it really well. Some people would have called her out on it - quite rightly.

Lexy2345 · Yesterday 15:13

I've never liked her and she completely ruined the end of Hebburn for me, when she rocked up as the mother in law from hell.
She has always said outrageous things, but she's never been warm, witty or self-deprecating, which would go some way to forgiving her horrific ourpourings.

Waitingfordoggo · Yesterday 15:14

Allseeingallknowing · Yesterday 14:46

Read her autobiography!

I don’t want to read her book. Why are you suggesting people do that? Would it make any difference to the fact she exhibited racism on telly today?

Racism is acceptable everywhere, actually. On MN. Social media. Broader media. Society.

We’ve just watched a black man be kicked to death in the media. And MNers joined in.

So rather than wagging your finger at me, I’d suggest you look around yourself a bit more carefully.

Um, no. Racism is everywhere and it is accepted by many. It is never acceptable though.

And I agree, there is lots of racism in society. In the media. On social media. On MN. No argument there at all.

But that rather undermines your point that it is related to age in any way. So stop trying to pretend that it is.

I know! "Everyone is welcome"!
Dear Lord.
She said to Andi "Don't be nervous - everyone is welcome".
To a man who was born in this country.
Who wasn't looking or appearing to be remotely nervous.

Words fail me.

'What are you?' Confused

It is absolutely staggering that she said that.

Well there is an American rapper called 'Latto' she had to drop her original artist name of 'Mulatto' to appease people who found it not appropiate.

Latto is actually mixed race, white mum, Black dad. Using the term Mulatto as her stage name was her attempt at reclaiming the word, though it failed.

She said it.
Honestly, she actually said to him "What are you".
I feel I need to back up my claim that she said it because in my head I'm thinking to myself "Wait, Temptree, you must have misheard, she can't have said that on live TV".
But she sure as hell said it.

I remember the days when she was funny, as an actress (yes, I'm that old), not a raconteuse. Every time I've had the misfortunate to see her on television over the past couple of decades, she has not been funny, or acting.
