The government is low-key telling people to stock up with tinned food, bottled water etc

I have tinned food, gas camping stoves etc just need to think about water really..

It's probably not the most important thing to panic buy, but maybe get an extra bottle of ketchup and some emergency salad cream.

There have been national, regional, county and council prepare campaigns for many years. Some tend to update them around this time of year as concerns about the upcoming winter come to mind.

You can search your local resilience forum or emergency plan to find concerns local to you, but the national prepare information covers most things.

Something will likely come, most likely weather related.

Remember plenty of governments, including Bristol City Council, have put out details on counter-zombie plans - that doesn't mean they know zombies are coming, it's just a slightly amusing version of what all these all prep plans are. It's part of government to prepare for all eventualities and help their people do the same. Whether they've done this well is another matter.

You could even start your own cat meat breeding program.

It's a home defense exercise. Essentially a war game. Where a scenario will be tested to see how officials hold up. They are running public campaigns along side. If you Google there's quite a few articles with more details.

I do think it depends on the actual issue. I think if IT systems go down and bank accounts freeze people will panic.

Many people take daily prescriptions which would again panic some more than running out of beans. As many would probably only have under a week buffer if that.

Yes. My husband relies on multiple medications, we've built up about 2.5 weeks worth, I know that's a primary concern for a lot of people.

How much do people eat? Unless someone has a very small drawers, contents of a drawer would easily keep me going for 1-2 weeks. For example, a 1kg pack of rice would last 10 meals, and having 5 of those would leave 80% of the drawer still free? Likewise, tinned fish or biscuits take no space at all.

My stockpile is about 2 shoeboxes worth, excluding water, and I think that's really excessive, but frankly I went for variety/ options.

Bear in mind in an open-ended emergency, you are unlikely to be having big meals, but rather, rationing. Also generally you're looking at 72h max unless it's something really serious.

This is speaking as someone who has been through several extended emergencies and a minor war.

It's because of things like insecurity in the food supply chain - a cyber hack of Tesco could cut supermarket food supply by a third, I think I read. Would only make a difference of a few days, it's not about going crazy but most European countries have been recommending having a few days of supplies, a torch etc for years.

It's making me laugh too. DH stockpiling in the drawer definitely made me laugh too.

Ok, I'll elaborate because of all the interest - it's a big drawer in our large pine chest of drawers. It's full of tins, plus we have a stash of large water bottles in the wardrobe.

I'm actually going to move said stockpile of tins under a bed and add some rice bags as our next move.

If I find a hidden stash of gold I'll report back.

if I learned one fing from COVID, it was never have less than 700 bog rolls about the house.

It isn't new guidance, its existed for years. Whenever the government update it in any way the media jump on it and report it in a sensationalised way to hype everyone up.
