The government is low-key telling people to stock up with tinned food, bottled water etc

I have tinned food, gas camping stoves etc just need to think about water really..

Do you think that they know something is happening/going to happen?

Easiest food if you want something cheaper is powdered stuff like complain. Boil up water on a camping stove and add water. Or even add cold water.

Living rural we take having reserves in as par the course

Cupboard under the stairs is like a shop tbh, tinned and dried food stuffs, toiletries, candles, wind up torches, radios, battery packs etc etc etc

Dh sets up lighting using 12v batteries, which he trickle charges via solar panels

We have a small generator which will keep the freezer and fridge running,

We have an old 1950s gas cooker which was heading to the tip, its in perfect working order and is set up in a garage plus a small camping stove

And we have wood fired heating though out the house and we keep a years supply of wood

Last year we were 5 days without phone, wifi or electricity after the storm

We are quite used to being snowed in or blocked in ( fallen trees) and its just not worth risking life and limb to pop out for a loaf , so we hole up and sit it out

I've not noticed Complan being cheap anytime I've been unwell of late 🙈 it's a useful standby obviously but works out a lot more expensive than the likes of tinned fish/meat or cereal/nuts etc

I always have a good ‘pantry’ supply but water would be a problem- those big bottles are hard to store and really wouldn’t last long

I have had self heating ramen and a self heating hot pot kit before whilst in China. They are perfect for picnics but I haven't seen them over here.

I think having a bit in for emergencies is always sensible.

Stock piling is probably over doing it though.

You can’t sensibly stockpile enough to get you through a war anyway.

You make a good point here which reflects risk and why it's a emergency supplies for a short period not full stockpiling we should consider.

London is economically safer is what I take from this. They aren't expecting a full war. There's something about geographical proximity that matters here though. And theres something about the political situation that matters.

Realistically if the internet trading goes down they think they can still access global markets and make a transaction in London that they can't do in the US. I guess even if that means travelling to London or having someone in London available to enable the transaction. If there's no aviation fuel or foreign nationals are treated in a hostile way by the Trump administration, this starts to make sense.

They also possibly don't trust Trump not to seize foreign assets if things go south in the US to save his own arse. Or they worry that he'll hold it hostage over NATO or something.

I don't know. But Trump is making them very nervous about something and that says a lot about the scale of the current instability.

There are no tin foil hats here. Just extra caution that usual.

Its not about war. It might be an idea to actually read and understand the reasons that this is being suggested.

I've just thought of something that would sort me out anyway as I live on my own and no pets either so am easy to cater for. Buy a big bag of protein powder, tinned fruit in juice, Weetabix. Make up protein powder with water (it's white if vanilla flavour ha ha so looks like milk!) add to Weetabix and fruit, drink what's left. That'd keep me going for days. I know I'd soon get sick of it, but it's easy, nutritious and doesn't require cooking. Must have water though for mixing, note to self. 😊

Rumours are rife today about a big crash in the markets being imminent. Whether this will pan out I don't know.

All I know is something significant is happening. I confess I genuinely don't understand it but there's enough going on to have my attention.

There is a press conference due to be held at 1pm local time in DC by the Vice President and an executive order is due to be signed by the President at 5pm.

The speculation is all over the place. Some are saying they are going to declare the Iran US war over - after realising they have run out of oil reserves and if there's one thing Trump Supporter love more than Trump it's being able to drive their cars - and this would be a disaster for the mid terms.

Others saying it's all market manipulation.

Others saying that the executive order being signed after the markets close is big.

The Yen has been struggling and it does look like the Bank of Japan is trying to prop it up with intervention today which really could impact the markets (look at the exchange rate of the yen against the dollar and the pound today - something significant happening).

I don't know. But in the context of everything else going on and the news this week being particularly 'spiky' (lots of significant little things that don't seem to be adequately being taken seriously by the British Press), I'd say keep your eyes open.

I don't think it will be good, whatever it is, for most of us normal people.

I have more bottles of water than I know what to do with after water issues in my area!!

It's interesting that people always mention they have a full freezer of usually batch cooked food. How long do you think that will last in a power cut?

You’d get to live like zombie apocalypse kings for a few days eating it all. Unless you live somewhere very cold.

As long as the power was coming on for a bit each day however and you was very careful opening the freezer you’d be ok. Not ideal on a general day but you’d be on in a oh shit.

We have a freezer full of figs and plums so hope it doesn't go off, no batch cooking though.
