This trend (on Insta etc) for referring to inanimate objects as "she"........it is infuriating - handbags, holiday homes, bronzer......make it stop! I'm a 50 year old women and largely follow women of a similar age. It's infantile and ridiculous. AiBU?

You know what? I am heartily sick of being "sold to". I feel like I have to rethink every single thing I look at on social media. Instead of connecting with other real human beings, I'm just waiting for the hidden "sell". "10 best..." then links to the products, or worse "join my course for tips on how I...". Its becoming so formulaic and I feel like a mug. Is there anyone in the world not doing a hard sell of their story?

Can I just enjoy five minutes without having to be emotionally wrung out or sold something?

Ahhhh I so agree! The overuse of the word whimsy makes me want to commit a violent act. That and the greeting on the videos, Hey Babes! I’m not your babe, no I don’t want to follow some other whimsy account. I want you to share the clothes you have bought in silence so I can see if they suit me! I don’t want to see running backwards and forwards to the camera like you have a uti! Oh and the new, I was too nervous to share this video….. then all the bleating about how brave they are because they did something very ordinary like go to Tesco but titled it, going out of my comfort zone! Please someone silence these influencers.

yes, mainly for the purposes of wishing safe transit for all future users of said forms of transport... but not a random, inanimate and insignificant object during a livestream

we've arrived at a point where people believe their own hype to the point they can re-purpose phrases, grammar and linguistic context to mean something it doesn't, other than in their own heads...

its like Corporate Speak 2.0, where people are meant to get on message, turn the same page and align with the direction of travel,

rather than point out the truth that the other person is deluded and waffling shite

And Ma said that some men think their cars are more important than their wives and children.

It is annoying, but it probably comes from referring to ships as "she".

Historically the languages which evolved to give us modern English (basically a combination of Anglo-Saxon and Norman French) had linguistic gender which gradually dropped out of use over the centuries, so that we now only have one definite and one indefinite article when referring to inanimate objects. Other major European languages have retained linguistic gender. My degree was in German which has 3 linguistic genders, masculine, feminine and neuter, plus a much more complex grammar and syntax than English. My close German friend loved English for its simplicity of grammar, but not for its irregular spelling. 😉

The grammatical gender for a table you eat at is feminine - la table. A data table is masculine "le tableau de données".
