This trend (on Insta etc) for referring to inanimate objects as "she"........it is infuriating - handbags, holiday homes, bronzer......make it stop! I'm a 50 year old women and largely follow women of a similar age. It's infantile and ridiculous. AiBU?

I'm relieved to see Nobody's Child has stopped calling everything 'she'. I think they were near the forefront of this ridiculous fad, so perhaps it's on the way out. Sorry, perhaps she's on the way out - taking her tapping and rustling with her!

There's a new trend (or it might have been around for a while as I don't spend much time on Instagram) for people demonstrating recipies to refer to chicken breasts as chicken boobs or boobies. As in, " grab your slow cooker, add some onions, peppers, a tin of tomatoes and some chicken boobies" cringe inducing nonsense

I like it. English used grammatical gender for nouns well into the 12th century and the practice is long due a revival.

Came to say the same thing, but its not just men ive known a few women that do it.
And some give their cars and bikes names.

Its not just a trend it been around for years.

Shes cold out there this morning.
Shes poring of rain.
I think is because of the name mother nature.

Mostly the same for me, lots of stuff about books, ballet, some comedy, and music all things I am interested in. i get the odd influencer thingy but I scroll past as quickly as i can, if you click even once then the alogrithm will send you more though there is a "not interested" tab you can click to make it hopefully stop

Sure I'm being argumentative! The irritating tendency OP describes is for everything to be 'she'. Particularly clothes, décor items and personal care. As I said, there is no language in which all these words are feminine.

It isn't some sort of intriguing linguistic revival or a new lingua franca. They're anthropomorphising cardigans and candles. All these comments about other languages, dialects and earlier versions of English are irrelevant.

Some are interesting in their own right, mind you. Did you know that grammatical gender is not only about sex (M, F, N) but can also distinguish semantic features like humans, animals, plants, liquids, or sizes? Some living languages have around 20.

I’m not on insta but I spend a lot of time on Reddit looking at handbag subs and I see people ( mostly the americans ) refer to their bag as she, which I thought was bad enough.

The best one though is when they post a collection of their bags and title it “look at the family photo”
or “a photo of all the children together”

A separate point, but I find it achingly intolerable when people have words written on their walls that state what you should be doing in that room e.g. soak, love, eat, relax etc. DONT TELL ME WHAT TO DO!!

Well, the majority of Instagrammers are vacuous, pointless and desperate for attention so I guess they’ll say anything for clicks.
