The film Angel Face - Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons 1952

During the start he is describing his girlfriend and mentions she is 105lbs

I thought I'd misheard and maybe it was 125lbs but no, 105lbs

Thats 7 and a half stone.

Seems very tiny but AI tells me that is the usual sort of frame and weight to height ratio for actresses in those days. The actress playing the girlfriend was 5'4 apparently. So slight frame but not underweight

I was a bit surprised it was so low a weight.

I think some people are just smaller and some people are just bigger. I've always been tiny. I remember being weighed at around 18 every 3 months when I had the depo injection and I was 7 and a half stone (5ft5). Then after leaving 6th form they weighed me and I had lost half a stone. It took me ages to work out that it was because I ate sweets everyday I was at sixth form and then when I had a gap year I was working and stopped eating the sweets! So from about 19 onwards I have always weighed 7 stone until quite recently when I started exercising and I guess that's helped me gain some muscle. I was paranoid I wouldn't get pregnant easily because of my weight despite having regular periods so I tried really hard to gain weight and had to eat 3500 calories a day for 6 months to gain half a stone. I did have an active job on my feet all day. I got pregnant straightaway. And soon after birth I went back to 7st. I didn't bother trying to gain weight after and got pregnant within 3 months of coming off the pill with my second son. Again lost the weight quickly. Fast forward to 2020 I was furloughed, I had always wanted to try running so started. I gradually gained about a quarter of a stone and then after a couple of years I got bored of running in bad weather so I joined a gym. I do cardio for 40mins 4x per week usually the bike and 50mins of weighted Pilates X4 per week and I have managed to keep my weight at 7 and a half stone. I have no doubt if I stopped I'd loose that half stone again! I do think I look slim skinny but people reassure me I don't look unwell! I have never hadmy weight bought up in any medical apps or whilst pregnant. I gained 3 stone when pregnant.

Im watching James Stewart now and looked him up. Apparently he was underweight and struggled to put on weight. Anxiety I think.

I am exactly 156cm myself. This time last year I was 8kgs lighter than I am now. All my clothes still fit despite that. My darling 92yo Nanna is under 5ft; her weight hovers around 48kgs on a good day…and yet she wears an (Aus) size 14-16, while I’m still in my size 6-8…go figure!

CatherineHoward17 · 01/09/2026 16:29

I've been watching the TV series Lucky and there's a reference to the protagonist Lucky (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) weighing 90lbs. That's six and a half stone, and I'd say she's of average height. It's an off-the-cuff comment by one of the characters, not a report from the doctor's office, but she does look very thin.

She weighs 105lbs...

@likelysuspect apologies, I should have quoted or tagged @AbacusCat who was talking about Jean Simmons.

Apologies - I have never watched the film so didn't realise it was a different actress.

Hiredgun · 01/09/2026 16:32

Remember that we are in the midst of the biggest obesity crisis the world has ever seen so numbers are very distorted.

As a guy, it’s interesting because a lot of guys who look fantastic and lean with abs etc. really don’t weigh that much.

Weight alone doesn’t really tell the full story.

likelysuspect · 01/09/2026 16:35

Well Ive gone down a right rabbit hole now and it turns out that expectations and weights were very different dependent on the background, so actresses that had been dancers, tended to be around a BMI of about 22 or so. Grable, Day, Hayworth etc

The studios also encouraged strength training for muscle mass.

They all seem to have been fairly average normal weights for their height, not underweight.

5ft 4 is quite short though so not that surprising.

Yetanotherone12 · 01/09/2026 16:39

ACatNamedRobin · 01/09/2026 13:23

That was in the 50s, there were less UPFs and availability of ultra tasty calorific food, so people were a more normal weight then.

It's still in case across the world, look at Eastern Europe or China or Japan.

Plus the amphetamines and methamphetamines that were prescribed for weight loss back then. And the smoking.

user293948849167 · 01/09/2026 16:40

I am 5’4” and was 8.5 stone at my slimmest in my 20s (size 8). I wasn’t underweight.
7.5 stone is probably underweight for someone my height though, imagining myself a whole stone lighter than I was back then and yeah I would have looked very slim.

WaltzingWaters · 01/09/2026 16:40

I’m 5ft and was around 7stone until around late 20’s. I certainly didn’t look remotely anorexic and was able to eat loads back then! Now late 30’s and 2 children later I’m more like 8 1/2 stone (a size 8-10) and have to work to maintain that.

Yetanotherone12 · 01/09/2026 16:43

Weights are often reported as lower than they are.

there’s an episode of bones where Brennan has her doppelgänger on her table. The script described the weight as the standard “120lbs” that you find in most Hollywood films.

Emily Deshanel pointed out that would be very, very slim for someone her height and got it changed to her real weight- 140 lbs I think?

but often the quoted weights aren’t real, they’re what Hollywood thinks sounds attractive…

Daftypants · 01/09/2026 16:44

I’m 5’2” and weighed 105 pounds ( 7 and a half stone ) as a young woman from my late teens through my 20s .
i just have a small frame and I’m not muscular, never have been .
Even after having my 3 children I weighed under 8 stone .
My current weight in my 60s I’m about 54 kilos whatever that is in pounds not sure

A BMI of 22 for someone 5ft 4 is around 9st 2lbs, or 128lbs.

Which is quite a bit higher than some of the weights claimed on here as normal for the time…

I can well believe this (and I doubt that Anya Taylor-Joy is actually only 90 lbs, although she can't be much more) but it's so irresponsible, to promote these unrealistically light weights as healthy, achievable and desirable!

PussyGaylore · 01/09/2026 16:49

I was 7 and a half stone and 5”4 through my 20s- I was a size 6. I didn’t eat a lot as I smoked but I wasn’t anorexic just not that bothered with food.

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 01/09/2026 13:50

This. I’m 5ft 10 and haven’t weighed less than 9stone since I was at school. I take a size 8 shoe. I’m female, but I’m pretty certain I would not have got work as an actress back in the day.

Edit to add I’m astonished that 5’4 is average height. I don’t know these tiny people. Everyone I know is around my height.

Edited

🙄🙄🙄
Where on earth do you live that "everyone" you know is about 5'10? Brobdingnag?

Because statistically that height represents about 1% of uk adult women. So for literally every one you know to be that height sounds....unlikely.

Perhaps you're just not very observant and dont notice the rest of us scuttling around under your nose?

I wish people wouldnt come out with this utter nonsense. Even if your close family and friends are very tall, like you, its completely ludicrous to claim that every single shop worker, colleague, acquaintance etc you interact with is of the same, statistically very unusual height.

AmyDudley · 01/09/2026 16:51

In my 20's I was 7 stone and 5'2" . I certainly wouldn't have described myself as skinny, definitely small framed and petite, but not underweight in appearance'.

Yes because they were dancers so they had more muscle, just the way they were made.

I think people should be able to talk about their own bodies without being told they're abnormal

My mum has always been very petite, shes never smoked, never took any weight loss drugs (or any drugs actually she is anti medication) and weighed about 7 stone, but she is only about 5'2.

She doesnt look anorexic, she has normal looking arms and no lollypop head.

So perhaps like other said, her weight isnt what is in the script.

What a weird post ... I’m 5'3" and was 95 lbs or under into my early twenties, and I never had a “lollipop head,” nor was I anorexic. Being very thin does not automatically make someone look ill, and you certainly can’t diagnose an eating disorder from the shape of someone’s arms or how big their head does or doesn't look.

What are you talking about? In the UK, 5ft4 is exactly the average height for women.

And a nineteen inch waist was regarded as normal
