I found out my wife and my best friend had a physical relationship before we got married, I don't know how to react

jhkyg · Today 09:15

I genuinely don't know what to write or how I'm supposed to react to this.

My wife and I are both in our mid 40s. My best friend is also the same age. He has been my best friend since childhood. He's the godfather to our children, and my wife and I are godparents to his children.

For a bit more context, my wife and he are also very close friends. They actually knew each other before I knew either of them, and they've always had a very good friendship

Our families are extremely close. We normally see each other every week for breakfast or a BBQ in one of our gardens. We go on family trips together, celebrate birthdays and holidays together, and our children are all teenagers and are basically like cousins.

My wife and I have a genuinely good marriage. We've been together for decades, we love each other, we're financially comfortable, and as far as I knew there was absolutely nothing wrong between us.

Then on Friday night, my best friend told me he needed to confess something that had happened a very long time ago.

He told me that when we were 18, during a six month breakup between me and my now wife, he and my wife had a sexual relationship for around 2–3 months.

I honestly felt physically sick when he told me.

I didn't know how to react. I cried. He just stood there and kept telling me that it ended years ago, that nothing had happened since, and that I shouldn't be angry with my wife because we weren't together at the time.

I got angry with him and told him I didn't want him to contact me again. Then I went home.

For context, yes, I broke up with my wife when we were 18. I was an idiot teenager and I broke her heart. That's on me. We were apart for about six months, then eventually got back together. We've been solid ever since.

In all those years, I've never had a reason to believe she was cheating on me. Not once.

Yesterday, I told my wife what he'd confessed. At first she said she had kept it from me because she didn't want to lose me. She apologised for hiding it.

She confirmed that they had been together for around three months while we were broken up. She said they eventually stopped because they realised remaining friends was better for them, and then around three months later, she and I got back together.

But then she also told me that technically it was none of my business who she slept with while we were broken up. It was her body and she was single. If this had been some random person she slept with during those six months, I probably wouldn't care now.

But it wasn't some random person. It was my best friend. The man who stood beside me as my best man at our wedding. I've trusted for most of my life. I've allowed into my home every week. That man who is godfather to my children.

And they've both known about this for 26 years while I had absolutely no idea. That's the part I can't get past. I keep thinking about every BBQ, every family holiday, every time the four of us have sat together talking, and wondering whether they were both looking at each other and remembering something I didn't know. My wife keeps saying that nothing happened during our relationship and that she has loved me all these years. And honestly, I believe her But something has changed in my head. I can't look at my friend the same way anymore. I can't even look at their friendship the same way.

Part of me wants to completely cut him and his family out of our lives. No more breakfasts, no more BBQs, no more holidays together. I don't want my children caught in the middle, but at the same time I don't know how I'm supposed to carry on having him around as if nothing happened.

And then there's my wife. I know technically she didn't cheat on me. We were broken up.
But she deliberately kept this from me for 26 years, and so did he. I'm struggling with the fact that two of the people I trusted most in the world knew something incredibly significant about my own life that I didn't know. I don't know whether I'm overreacting because it happened so long ago, or whether the fact that it was my best friend and was deliberately kept secret makes this completely different.

But right now I feel hurt, betrayed, embarrassed and honestly a bit stupid and Jealousy so much

I believe there should be no secrets in a marriage. It wasn’t some random guy it was my best friend, and that person is still in our lives. I had never known the full context of their relationship.

At least for me, it changes a lot from now on

Oh don't be silly. This was decades ago and it was a nothing. Either you value the decades you've been together or you don't. You seem to be looking for excuses to condemn her.

It’s a hypothetical question about how much we can police people. About how much it matters, or not, that we don’t know all there is to know about our partners that we enjoy life with.

i think you may have taken it literally and imagined I was somehow making stuff up about anyone in particular!

I hadn't taken it literally just think the OP is already imagining enough!

That seems very blinkered foolhardy advice, especially if the other parties have been protecting the OP. Wife could heavily resent the inappropriate control, OP could loose all his important adult relationships and what about the kids?

How is the friend protecting the OP? After 26 years throws a granade into his life.

Similarly, as OP has said he can no longer trust them, so (rightly or wrongly) they can't maintain current close relationship.

He not being controlling, he's setting boundaries on one issue after being deceived. If she can't accept that, and views it as control, then the marriage is over.

I feel for kids.

Scarlettpixie · Today 14:40

He didn't sleep with your wife though, she was your ex girlfriend. It's odd your friends suddenly felt the need to tell you now. I would be mad at him for stirring the pot so to speak.

I think you are massively overreacting. I have slept with friends in my 20's, decided it was a bad idea, moved on and stayed friends. I only told my husband about my serious relationships.

I am also god mother to one of my ex's daughter. We were together 5 years and were still house sharing when he met his now wife so yes she knows about me but what difference does that make. We remained friends even though its all getting on for 30 years ago. In fact you have reminded me I must message her and arrange a catch up. We don't see each other often now and I am closer to his wife but I can promise you when I see my ex, I don't ever think about us having sex and at no point since we split did I wish things were different.

Give your wife a break. She didn't do anything wrong here. You say yourself you had broken up with her and broke her heart. Of course she didn't tell you because she knew you'd react like this!

Op does seem to have escalated the situation somewhat, yes!

Holeymoley28 · Today 14:42

You know what as well. By the fact the “friend” suddenly needed to confess that means he has been thinking about this for 26 years.

Your wife who knows as she wasn’t the one who felt the need to unburden herself.

For 26 years the “friend” has been remembering and thinking about how he slept with his bestmates ex for months not a one off not a whoopsie we got drunk but I knew how much you wanted her back. A three month long fwb at least while letting you cry on his shoulder and encouraging you to get her back while he was slipping one in… that’s betrayal.

Why now and why was it something he felt the need to dwell on if it’s not a big issue. If it’s such a no big deal no confession would be needed to lose his quilt.

If he having marriage problems?
Harbouring long love for the wife?
Secretly hate you and want you upset?

This post isnt written by a man, it’s not written by a middle aged woman either. The language is wrong….

Worse is that, one of my kid isn't mine!!'

Yea, no, not buying any of it.
It’s all nonsense

Next up: are the “work trips” secret assignations..

Tinkalinkalink · Today 14:46

I'm a married woman. I would be fucking livid and feel exactly the same as OP.

Would probably need therapy for years to come to terms with the extent of the betrayal but that's just me.

All these other posters with no problem with it going to an lengths to say just chill out bewilders me.

To be fair it is for women only. It is called Mumsnet after all 😂

No it isn't and I'm pretty sure Mumsnet have confirmed that several times. It may have started out that way, but things evolve.

What a load of drama over nothing. You're all in your forties and this happened when you were teens..honestly! Who knew you'd have ended up married. He shouldn't have told you in the first place

yeah, but then it was a secret for twenty odd years.
id be upset too.

TankFlyBossW4lk · Today 14:50

I'm really sorry you're upset, OP.

However, this was 3 months when you were on a break and you were all 18 years old. Your wife had done nothing wrong. 18 year olds should be gaining experience in these matters.

It's astonishing to me that you're still happily married to the woman you met when you were 18. As such, it's probably a very lovely and successful marriage. I would try and brush this one under the carpet and move on if I were you.

I am interested in what possessed your best friend to tell you now though. That is strange.

Well it might be reasonable, even given the OPs strong reactions to things, to expect the revelation to be more of a damp sqib because it's 26 years later and everything has gone fine?
We are missing information

randomusername03 · Today 14:51

You never asked, she never told, and more importantly, never lied about it. Do you tell you wife how every morning shit went before you got back with her? No? Do you tell her every single detail of your life thats shes unaware of now? So you are 'keeping secrets' according to your own diktat. Yes you are shocked, but ffs be a mature adult about it. Your wife's done nothing wrong yet here you are trying to paint her as a cheater. As someone said earlier, go to reddit, they will tell you to end your marriage over there and rejoice in telling you what a cheating ho your wife is. Because its full of immature 18 year old incels.

Sam9769 · Today 14:52

caringcarer · Today 10:32

Your wife didn't cheat on you. You broke her heart by breaking up with her. On a break your wife could sleep with whoever she pleases. You are being ridiculous to be upset by this. It happened over 20 years ago and you say yourself your wife has never given you any cause to doubt her love for you. Push this against her and you could lose her. I'd be more wondering why your friend decided to tell you after all these years. Also does his wife know? Honestly I'd say to your friend well my wife chose the better guy and laugh at him. Then put it behind you. I'd carry on with the breakfasts and BBQs especially as all of your DC are close.

This.

Warmlight1 · Today 14:52

Has OP confirmed sex/identity?

Ritaskitchen · Today 14:53

You were all very young. In our 40s it’s so very clear how clueless, stupid and crazy younger people are. The brain is only fully mature at 25.
Should they have told you when you and your now DW got back together- probably yes. Is it likely that if they had told you that you and DW would have married. Probably no.
There has been no cheating. There have been lies of omission.
They both clearly care for you very very much. There is no way that they wanted to ‘make a fool of you’ that’s your hurt and rage talking.
Of course you are allowed to be upset, anngry etc. But you and now DW were not together when this happened. And she has never cheated on you.
Are you really willing to throw your life away for a youthful lunatic event?
It’s understandable you don’t want any more contact with him.
You need potentially some decent therapy for you. With the aim of repairing your marriage.
You need to be very very careful that something called retroactive jealousy doesn’t destroy your marriage. It’s a horribly destructive force jealousy. Make a commitment to choose your marriage and your wife. Cut the other guy out but don’t destroy your marriage.

Genevieva · Today 14:53

You are going to need to find a way of rationalising it and then moving on for the sake of your own happiness. Your life hasn’t actually changed. You still have a wonderful family, a strong marriage and reliable friends whose company you enjoy. Put it down to teenage mistakes that have weighed heavily on your friend’s conscience for a long time because he cares about you. Focus on all the good stuff and you will realise that this revelation isn’t all that important.

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · Today 14:53

I’ve just read the whole thread and you are now suggesting that your child isn’t even yours even though it was born years later than when you were all 18 and that you broke up with her because she said something nasty about your football team. And that you don’t want to see either of them for a very long time.

So you are going to effectively split up your family because your wife slept with your friend when you were all 18 years old after you’d dumped her and broken her heart for saying something nasty about your football team. You’ll be getting a DNA test on your kid next.

Please take a deep breath and think about what you are doing. You are going to lose your wife and be a divorced dad at this rate.

TheOwlShootAtNight · Today 14:56

If I found that out about my husband and my best friend I would be devastated and would feel betrayed by both. They should have told you. Your wife should have told you before she agreed to marry you knowing you are still friends with the guy.

I say do the dna test for your peace of mind.

Isometimeswonder · Today 14:57

@jhkyg it's not about rights and wrongs now. It's where you go from here.
You need to talk to her

Chucklebunnie · Today 14:57

You were on a break

yellowspanner · Today 14:57

This would be a deal breaker for me. It's not the sex. It's keeping it a secret for 26 years
