I found out my wife and my best friend had a physical relationship before we got married, I don't know how to react

jhkyg · Today 09:15

I genuinely don't know what to write or how I'm supposed to react to this.

My wife and I are both in our mid 40s. My best friend is also the same age. He has been my best friend since childhood. He's the godfather to our children, and my wife and I are godparents to his children.

For a bit more context, my wife and he are also very close friends. They actually knew each other before I knew either of them, and they've always had a very good friendship

Our families are extremely close. We normally see each other every week for breakfast or a BBQ in one of our gardens. We go on family trips together, celebrate birthdays and holidays together, and our children are all teenagers and are basically like cousins.

My wife and I have a genuinely good marriage. We've been together for decades, we love each other, we're financially comfortable, and as far as I knew there was absolutely nothing wrong between us.

Then on Friday night, my best friend told me he needed to confess something that had happened a very long time ago.

He told me that when we were 18, during a six month breakup between me and my now wife, he and my wife had a sexual relationship for around 2–3 months.

I honestly felt physically sick when he told me.

I didn't know how to react. I cried. He just stood there and kept telling me that it ended years ago, that nothing had happened since, and that I shouldn't be angry with my wife because we weren't together at the time.

I got angry with him and told him I didn't want him to contact me again. Then I went home.

For context, yes, I broke up with my wife when we were 18. I was an idiot teenager and I broke her heart. That's on me. We were apart for about six months, then eventually got back together. We've been solid ever since.

In all those years, I've never had a reason to believe she was cheating on me. Not once.

Yesterday, I told my wife what he'd confessed. At first she said she had kept it from me because she didn't want to lose me. She apologised for hiding it.

She confirmed that they had been together for around three months while we were broken up. She said they eventually stopped because they realised remaining friends was better for them, and then around three months later, she and I got back together.

But then she also told me that technically it was none of my business who she slept with while we were broken up. It was her body and she was single. If this had been some random person she slept with during those six months, I probably wouldn't care now.

But it wasn't some random person. It was my best friend. The man who stood beside me as my best man at our wedding. I've trusted for most of my life. I've allowed into my home every week. That man who is godfather to my children.

And they've both known about this for 26 years while I had absolutely no idea. That's the part I can't get past. I keep thinking about every BBQ, every family holiday, every time the four of us have sat together talking, and wondering whether they were both looking at each other and remembering something I didn't know. My wife keeps saying that nothing happened during our relationship and that she has loved me all these years. And honestly, I believe her But something has changed in my head. I can't look at my friend the same way anymore. I can't even look at their friendship the same way.

Part of me wants to completely cut him and his family out of our lives. No more breakfasts, no more BBQs, no more holidays together. I don't want my children caught in the middle, but at the same time I don't know how I'm supposed to carry on having him around as if nothing happened.

And then there's my wife. I know technically she didn't cheat on me. We were broken up.
But she deliberately kept this from me for 26 years, and so did he. I'm struggling with the fact that two of the people I trusted most in the world knew something incredibly significant about my own life that I didn't know. I don't know whether I'm overreacting because it happened so long ago, or whether the fact that it was my best friend and was deliberately kept secret makes this completely different.

But right now I feel hurt, betrayed, embarrassed and honestly a bit stupid and Jealousy so much

I hear you OP. I would be disgusted too. Anyone saying otherwise must struggle with empathy.

I'm good, but honestly not good..... I'm not angry at her, I'm jealousy and feel bad, fool, stupid.....she was morethan what i thought all this year's

Literally they had sex....two people i trusted most and kept it as secret, for my own mental health i don't want to see both of them for a long time

If you choose to ignore your wife now, you risk her choosing to end the marriage. You need to try and deal with this like a grown up, not like a child.

Naddd · Today 12:08

Why did he choose to tell you now? 26 years later?
I do get what you're saying those commenting would never allow an ex to play such a significant role in their lives if they were in the same situation.
They absolutely should have told you.
I bet any of those commenting would feel betrayed by their best friend getting together with an ex, especially an ex that they told them they still loved. I get they were young at 18 but yes I think I'd feel the same as you, not that it happened but that they kept it from you
Does his wife know?

WigglyPinkFlamingo · Today 12:09

Weird that you’re being told now.. but I truly cannot imagine ever caring about anyone my husband has had sex with, nor something that happened so long ago.

So she choosed to whatever Good for her, regardlessly how i feel

Why should your feelings be more important to her than her own?

TheChickenRun · Today 12:09

When did you choose what was good for her not what suited you?

Your expectations of others seem entirely different from your expectations of yourself.

Can you now put aside whatever your feelings are for the “good” of your family instead of your short-term impulses?

So who is the father of the kid that isn’t yours?

No... that's one of his fears... he's now imagining one might not be his!!

BUT HE WON'T ANSWER THE QUESTION... WHAT DOES THE FRIENDS WIFE THINK OF IT ALL.. WHAT'S HER TAKE ON IT... DID SHE ALREADY KNOW.... ITS BEEN ASKED SEVERAL TIMES BUT NO RESPONSE....

Exactly this, People are not understanding gravity of this situation

Because there is no gravity.

It’s better to keep quiet about what can’t be changed. He was stupid to tell you now.

It's not about you.

Ohcrap082024 · Today 12:10

I’m astounded by some of the responses on here. Gob smacked.

If it was the other way round and the husband, the wife and her childhood best friend, the responses would be very different.

Yes, you were broken up. Yes, she had every right to have sex with another person.

But, they both lied to you for many years. Lied by omission. They should have told you a long time ago. Before marriage and dc.

I would want to know why he is telling you now.

I would also be deeply disturbed by this. My question would be “If you have lied about this, what else have you lied about?”

Bedingfield1 · Today 12:10

OP you are slightly over reacting and you need to cool it. Are you really going to ruin the lives of your teens because of your wife’s own business prior to your relationship 26 years ago?
be serious.

My husband is the sort of person that couldn't have been told about this situation at the time. My previous long term partner is the sort of person that I could have told. My husband is arrogant and very jealous. He also would have dumped me for a childish football team comment, you sound very similar. He also is the type that thinks he should be able to do and get away with things that I can't. Totally wrong obviously. They clearly knew what you were like and couldn't risk telling you. Very stupid of the friend to tell you now. I feel sorry for your wife.

Worse is that, one of my kid isn't mine!!

It must be a shock for you- so sorry.

What stood out to me, why now?

He could happily have carried on without this coming out.

When you said one of the children isn’t yours. Was that fear or fact?

Your wife/friend should have disclosed it at the beginning and that’s the hurtful bit. Then you would have had the choice to not get back together or accept. They took away your choice.

Notafanofheat · Today 12:12

OP- it is blatantly obvious why they didn’t tell you - by your own admission up till this point you had a practically charmed life in regards to marriage and friendship. They wanted that life and didn’t think you’d be able to handle the truth and blow up everything- as you’re basically doing. On the face of it - she didn’t want a romantic relationship with him, but wanted one with you- despite you dumping her over team rivalry (seriously?)- so if you’re going to be all black and white about this- she chose you and he’s been looking at your life from sidelines. It was decades ago, honest to all that’s saint, who cares. You were happy and you’re letting your ego blow it all up.
There is only one troubling thing in all this - your friend telling you now. The best case scenario is he’s been struggling with this for the last X amount of years and couldn’t anymore. Second, he’s an addict and going through 12 steps. Every other reason is significantly more nefarious - understanding his motivations is where I would put my energy.

Then ask her ??

CJsGoldfish · Today 12:14

jhkyg · Today 10:09

Yeah, they chose to lie to protect themselves, not me!!

I mean, I wonder how many more lies they’re hiding.

At the very least, they took away my ability to make my own choices about my life. I feel betrayed on so many levels.

So dramatic 🙄

You said you've had a good marriage, your friendship with the other couple is close, kids are all friends etc.
Clearly that is irrelevant now. You are obviously never going to 'get over' this. For everyones benefit, including your own, rather than punishing your dw for something that happened 26 yrs ago, after you had a tantrum over a football game loss and dumped her, you need to divorce.
Step away from the computer, try and get a handle on this jealousy and look forward to a future without these people you no longer trust.

DesertStorm · Today 12:14

It's ok.
You can handle this, you are just feeling a bit shocked right now.
Give yourself a bit of time to take it all in.
My first thought was, she chose you, you are the one she married and at 18 she was free to choose. You are the one that she got back together with.

At 18 they didn't know how things were going to pan out or plan this and at the time, they thought they should say nothing.

Don't do anything hasty that you would regret, it sounds like you have a good life. Also, no reason why you can't ask questions and talk it through when you are ready.

So if someone doesn't tell you something that is none of your business they are lying by omission? Most people agree that the friend should have told him straight away but why should the wife have told him who she slept with when she wasn't in a relationship with him?

partmermaidpartplant · Today 12:15

Go ask on Reddit - you’ll get the replies you want there.

we just feel sorry for the poor wife here.

HenriettaHippopotamus · Today 12:16

I can see both sides. I think many people would feel annoyed to find out your partner and best friend shared such a secret and didn’t tell you at some point. It’s not that what they did is bad, it’s just going to feel odd that they withheld they had a sexual relationship.

From your wife’s POV she didn’t want to mess things up by revealing it when you got back together. Then it became harder to tell and enough time passes that it just seems like stupid teenage stuff.

The main issue is why he’s telling you now. Very strange.

You can torment yourself to the end of your days with 'what if's'. Do not help anyone, least of all you.

I really think you need to see a therapist. I don't think MN is the place for help, I honestly think you need to talk to people in real life, therapist, friends, family. Go for a walk, calm down too. You really are spiralling and it's really not good for you.

Bananacrepewithnuts · Today 12:17

Ofc!! Read My post.....i told never talk to me again

Regarding my wife, i can't trust her and I don't what else she kept secret

I remember those times when they were just alone, and I feel different about it now

Do you feel calm enough to talk to your wife again?
I might have missed it but are you still living in the house?
